  1. Amazing how many people can't see it's DBP! Obviously i'm biased but it definitely isn't black!
  2. Yeah, I agree with the state of driving getting worse. My experience of this has been heightened by my daily commute from Oxford to Newbury in the Golf. As we all know it's a classic commuter route so a variety of vehicles and driver abilities. The one thing I can't understand though is the sitting in the right hand lane because there's a lorry somewhere in the next mile. I mean... seriously? I like to move over when I deem there is a reasonable size gap, and I know a lot of other people do too but when the traffic is going faster in the left than the right, what do you do? I mean, i'm not intentionally undertaking but so many people get cross if you pass them on the left (i.e. with no intention to pull out in front of them again) that they speed up to the point of all bunching up again. And then when pace slows in the left and I want to move around a lorry, despite being about 10 cars up in position to where I was, am I allowed to pull out into a gap and pass or is that still an undertaking manouevre despite my original move over to the left lane a few miles back. I'm not sure, but it seems unreasonable to wait until the car I was originally behind to pass on the right before I can overtake the slow thing in the left and regain "my place" in the right hand lane. Does that make sense? It's basically a rant about people not moving over to the left when there is plenty plenty space. Some people only ever do it when it's their junction. Ho hum.
  3. Today I had uneven/misfiring runnning issues when I started the car. I've had it before (symptoms are poor running/ hesitattion between idle and 2000rpm) but today it cut out when pulling away and then took a few seconds to restart. I had a look under the bonnet whilst it was running and got a shock off the rubber booted ends of the HT leads at the dizzy cap. Surely that's not normal? I avoided the bare metal ends of the leads at the head for exactly that reason! I've never had any problems with any VW with water in the ignition before. Is this a common thing about the 8v engine? Also, could it be something else like a dodgy coil or a split dizzy cap? I'll check the cap later when I go home. If anyone (probs Tony_ack!) could help me diagnose that would be great. It happened a little bit over the last 2 weeks or so, but never cut out. I put it down to cheap petrol (ASDA - £1.30 a litre!) and then filled up at somewhere more reputable but now i'm thinking it's the ignition system. If I can swap out parts with a KR engine and test on the 8v digi (PB) such as coil etc etc please let me know as I have some new parts on the Corrado. I may try to swap over the dizzy cap and leads too (although car had a service before I bought it in April so shouldn't really be necessary!) Cheers :D p.s. I have twixes and/or ham. maybe even ham flavoured twixes, but we'll see. ---------- Post added at 01:40 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:31 PM ---------- From some very superficial research done this lunchtime, it seems it could be the MAF also.
  4. I think a heat gun and a scraper is the normal way of removing underseal - bit backbreaking though. I wouldn't bother putting a paint on top of the underseal (rubbery foamy stuff) as it won't do anything. I know that Grey Stripe is a good off the shelf underseal, but I think the purists would probably go for Shulz or something like that for a more OEM finish.
  5. i had an ashley on a mk2 golf, that was a good item. The black paint burnt off quickly though so might be worth treating with VHT paint or wrapping it. I'm not sure if it will fit onto a KR in a Corrado though. It would be worth finding out tbh. I'd like a stainless manifold for mine too.
  6. to be honest, if the removal of a plastic tube from the intake would increase the traction or power greatly i think everyone would do it.
  7. I hope the prices rise again to decent collectable status after the economy restabilises. Perhaps we will retain our higher quality of owner too! /snobbish rant
  8. I am thinking about pulling the brand new VAG water pump off the Plum 16v and putting it on the Golf. I have to do a coolant flush on the Golf soon anyways, and putting on a brand new part (with its solid pulley - none of that corrado nonsense!) sounds like a no-brainer. I'm wondering what other parts are identical between the engines, it's nice to be able to build up spares as I have another KR block waiting in the wings. From Mr Swompy IIRC! Bought it ages ago, with a G60 block for my bro. I will try to nip over and get some pics. It's a mess under the bonnet but it's getting there. Once the engine is fully out, I can finish the hard brake lines and also give it all a clean up. Will definitely need to weld up the battery tray and possibly even the chassis rail underneath. ---------- Post added at 01:08 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:07 PM ---------- Definitely! :D drop me a text if you still have my number, I have swapped phones and only have about 3 contacts. 2 of those are family!!
  9. Great choice, gorgeous colour too. Really don't see many of the DBPs around anymore. It's also given me a kick up the ar$e to get on with mine...!
  10. Using the missus to help me diagnose the exhaust, we drove around a bit today with her (n/s) window down so that I could hear the echo of the exhaust off walls and other structures. For whatever reason, the exhaust seems to be louder inside than it is out. I can only conclude that it is resonating on the rubber mounts and therefore sounding louder in the cabin than outside. So I am feeling less pikey. Result! :D
  11. I attacked the plum again yesterday. Didn't get massively far between bouts of rain, but I took the radiator off and got a good look at the rad support. It's pretty fooked (pics to follow) BUT it *IS* a mark 2 part. Identical to the one I recently refurbed (can't remember part number but they were the same). I guess being an early Corrado it makes sense to have a few golf parts on it. Really looking forward to getting the engine out, and cracking on with this.
  12. Doesn't removing this part on a G60 lead to the air pulsing through the intake and making a droning noise at a certain speed, very similar to a dead wheel bearing? I know i'd leave the snorkel in, cos a droning noise would really annoy me.
  13. Cheers for the info about Jetex Tony, I might see how much they're going for.
  14. wouldn't the R36 head flow better? The ports seem huge on it!
  15. Yeah, I'm having the same problems Kip. Also, the compression out of the tailpipes is really high - never had an 8v before so i don't know if this is normal. I guess it shows the rings are sealing well after 170k! It still has plenty of get up and go through all gears so maybe like the 16v engines they loosen and get a bit more pokey with age. I have an Ernst thin front silencer, then an unknown middle box and a Euroflo back. The downpipe is looking pretty bad, perhaps I should swap it sometime and then all the parts shall be new. I'm half tempted by a 4-branch to be honest although I don't want to rob torque from the 8v as it has nothing above 5500rpm anyways. My setup now booms/bellows around 3000rpm so about 60mph in top. I wish my window reg worked properly so I could drive with my drivers window down and find out just how loud it is. I think it resonates in the cabin and sounds louder inside than it does out - but no way to check at this stage. Is yours an 8 or 16v?
  16. Fair enough, I'll give it a try sometime. Really wished I'd left the car up on stands tbh, a couple of the tyres are completely dead now. Never mind.
  17. Yeah she's not quietening down! I guess it's just a cheapo backbox with less insulation / chambers inside of it. Never mind. It's not *too* pikey...!
  18. Hi David, yeah I was thinking about doing those instead. IIRC there's 6 laid out in a rectangular pattern around the flange/s? I think i'd still need to be underneath to do that as it was tricking enough leaning over the top of the engine to do the mani bolts! I think that is the better way to do it. Cheers for the advice!
  19. For all of my groupies (Mainly Alex), I'm trying to decide whether to get a petrol turbo or diesel turbo engine. I'm hearing good things about chipped diesels putting out performance times around about those of G60s, and it would also return good MPG. This would mean I could use it as my daily driver. I'm reading up a lot on Tom's thread at the mo, and have been speaking to Steve Supercharged in the past about this conversion. The one problem I would have is the lack of space to buy the donor car and move it all across. The other idea is just a 20vt really. I could do a 16vt and keep it in line with the cars roots, but either way a good build including the uprating of all other parts will probably cost near enough the same for the diesel donor car as above. I hear that 20v engines drop in well to early 16v bays with respect to looms etc. So this is a plus point. If anyone has any thoughts I'd love to hear them. Steve, if you would like to compare your G60 and TDI for me that would be a good starting point perhaps! Thanks, Jon.
  20. Hey mate, I scraped a 2:1 aswell, my average grade just says 60%! So glad it's all over tbh. Didn't even go to Grad in the end!
  21. 3corsameal, was it this PJ? I think he is also a Byker:
  22. Powdercoating can't really be touched up, and the second it gets chipped it just starts cracking. My 2p.
  23. Save yourself. Seriously. p.s. welcome to the forum.
