hey all, anyone know what the direct to head kits actually do? aside from replacing the induction system what sort of gains can be had? what does the car sound like? i've looked at the jenvey website but to be honest i don't know what bits i'd need to do a conversion. can anyone shed any light? cheers

whoop! up and running! replaced the head, spark plugs, dizzy, rotar and cap, waterpump, thermostat, thermostat housing, pas pump, aux belt, pas belt, cam belt and tensioner, all the coolant, air filter, and soon to be the oil, oil filter and maybe oil cooler if i still lose water! she doesn't seem to be over-heating, or losing water which is ace, the drilled airbox sounds really throaty too :) you do not understand how happy i am right now :luvlove:

well my mates whipped it all off to check the head - no damage to the head which is odd. it's all back together now but losing water through the waterpump :(
-
wasn't the head but have replaced it anyway with a mates that has had a lot of work done on it already. it's all back together but is losing water from the waterpump. happy days

well my mates got me half way today! head off and is true and straight although no gasket failure which is puzzling. found that the water pump pulley was naffed so i have a replacement on the way. that was what must've caused the over-heating. water pump is replaced and pulley will be shortly, then it's just a case of bolting it all back together and seeing what i can get my mates to fix next!!!

head gasket gone! dizzy leaking oil! no longer "getting better" as the thread suggests lol getting the parts today and also a stock zaust to shut her up a little bit :) will be taking pics for posterity in the coming days :)

was quoted £200 for parts for £3-400 on labour. something about having to change the valve seals as well. i'm getting parts for £200, if i need a skim then that's another £50ish. a days worth of work with mates and it's done

i've got a couple of mates willing to help just for the hell of it so i am going to try it. don't fancy the engine swap if i'm honest. VR would be great but is too much hassle and i need a car for work so it can't be off the road. it'll be changed by this time next week :)

getting loads of white smoke out the exhaust, it overheats within 6 miles of my house driving like a granny, and i seem to have to top up the coolant every journey. head failure for definate???? garage quoted £500 - it only cost me £900 and there are other issues once that has been fixed so am contemplating calling it a day :( any advice? cheers oli

I've got a valver. The horn it pitfull. Anyone know a good way to beef it up a little? Replace it with something meatier?
-
can't be bothered to take pics. lol can't be bothered to update this that often either. the starter motor decided to pack it in the other day, although now it seems fine so have removed all the connections and cleaned them up and replaced. as it has never happened before and never since i can't tell if it has worked or not....
-
i missed that screw too but the whole thing came off with what i would call 'persuasion' before i realised it had snapped lol

i have trouble with my central lockign too, i.e. it is non-existent! the windows work (ish) but there is no CL at all. Interesting thread, i will be keeping an eye on this :)

that light is supposed to light when there is too little water as well. mine has been doing this since i replaced the coolant and a few hoses and it may be an air lock sending the sensor on your header tank all confused. try unplugging the fan and tightening all the jubilee clips etc. squeeze all the hoses you can get you hands on and you should see the water in the header tnk jumping up and down. then run it to temp without the header cap on - this should get rid of any excess air. turn her off and watch the coolant pi55 everywhere. top her up slowly and then see how it goes. not sure if this is 100% for the 1.8t if i'm honest, but worked on my KR - maybe a more knowledgable person can post to help? if not, then could it be that the coolant temp sensor isn't designed to take that high a temp?

instead of actually doing any work on the serious bits i have been faffing about with stuff that didn't "need" doing lol spraying up some bits and fitting my ipod connection and headunit....pics will follow in a few days i am planning a re-spray, but being quiet on the colour for now...

Hi Mate, Yeah they are both the same part number and genuine items too! Really got me this  was expecting them to be awsome. Can only think its the little metal bits that need filing away so the arm go's closer to the screen, has anyone else had to do this? :| isn't that a mod to be used on the stock rado arms not the lupo ones?

on the whole loom from, i won't be buying a kit as have heard mixed reviews, i will be creating the relay circut myself and following a guide on matey-matey which seems to be pretty good. i think i will go with the phillips bulbs although more expensive. i'd be concerned of the heat output too, especially since i have not heard anything about these PIAA ones....

Hey, Gonna be upgrading my wiring loom on the headlights, fogs and main beams and i would like to upgrade to the phillips 80%+ bulbs in all 3 lights. I have noticed that these come in H3 H4 H7 etc and have no idea what this is or which would fit my 91 valver. Can anyone help me? Oli

this is now what i am planning to do but for the headlights, main beams and fogs. relaying them all in and protecting it in a box bolted somewhere dry!!
-
yes please mate :) how much do you want for it

lack of updates = no money and good running of the car!!! had no problems with her at all since 'removing' the air lock in the coolant system, she's running well and still managing mid-20s mpg even in this cold weather. starts first time too! drew up a to-do list with 38 items on....only 2 or 3 are urgent, and at least one needs doing before the MOT in Feb. i've bought a late, 4-slat badged grill but the vw badge has lost all it's shine and needs replacing. am still in search for a 16v badge to complete the look i want. i'll get round to fitting it soon maybe.... next on my list is to weld up a nice big hole caused by the previous owner. i think they must've attempted to jack her up using the floor pan.... pics will follow as soon as i get round to it :)
-
grrr maybe i can just glue it in place? lol...honestly, i'm seriously considering it...
-
so some go for looms, some for just bulbs....can you fit the HID bulbs without a loom change? is it better just to fork out for the phillips bulbs and replace rather than looms? i know you all have different opinions, but surely there is a cost-effective and "1-spanner-job" for the dunces (like me)?
-
bah i have a late 4 slat on the way :( do they not fit on both then?
