fitting a non adjustable steering column (how-to)
Oliver2 replied to davidwort's topic in Drivetrain
I was wondering the same thing when looking at parts? there is both a 45mm and 26mm adaptor in ETKA, which one does the fixed column use? -
Arrr right I get it now! nice to know how these things actually work! If in doubt wiki!! "Early models used a static code in the ignition key (or key fob) which was recognised by an RFID loop around the lock barrel and checked against the vehicle's Engine Control Unit (ECU) for a match. If the code is unrecognised, the ECU will not allow fuel to flow and ignition to take place. Later models use rolling codes or advanced cryptography to defeat copying of the code from the key or ECU. Sounds like a bit of a pain then as I'm doing the column myself and won't be much use if it won't start after i've done it!.... Thanks for your help.

Okay, so I just keep the sensing ring, and the signal it picks up is from my key fob and therefore has nothing to do with my barrell or keys!? so I can just replace them.... whats the deal with the two options in Etka then? thanks for humouring me.... :notworthy:

Is this where the immobiliser key sensing ring comes in?? absolutely clueless....

Hi, I'm in the process of replacing my steering column and wanted to replace the Ignition barrell and ignition switch as occasionally the key won't turn and I have to wriggle it about for it to engage poperly so I wanted to replace both to be safe. Looking at Etka you can buy two barrells: lock.jpg[/attachment:3t6ecspk] I am confused to which one I need to get as when it comes to immobolisers I dont know a thing and frankly want to stay well clear of upsetting anything!!! will I need to get the one with the Immoboliser as my car has been fitted with one?? this is £80 though! twice as much as the standard barrell...... Or does my problem defo sound like the ignition switch in which case I can just keep my original barrell? Thanks and as always I apologise for lack of undersatanding!! This car is certainly helping thougH!!

Arr... good point, I assumed the column would come with the spring but I guess if its the Polo column with a seperate UJ it wont!!! Suddenly seeing why Davids write up suggested a second hand column, would be alot less hassle and cheaper. Yer I've got copy of ETKA so I'll give it a look and see if I kind find the part numbers for the spring and bearings... Could do with a proper list of parts for people buying from new.

Hey guys I'm finally going to attempt to do this Polo column replacement and have just one more question! Sorry! Is it worth replacing the Corrado Column to rack UJ as well? As it seems I might as well if I'm going to do this, as I don't want to replace it all and then connect it with a 15 year old part? or do they not wear to badly? If so, anyone got the part number? Its a late corrado so guess its the 22 teeth matching one? Had no luck finding second hand Polo column so am going to go into dealers with this list kindly put together by David: 535 419 563 - lock housing (CORRADO fixed column, mounting tube) polo column (1995-2000 separately bolted on UJ) - 535 419 503H lock barrel - 357 905 851D (same as polo 95-00, mk3 golf and passat 88-96) late dash upper trim 535 953 515 B late dash lower trim 535 953 516 B bolts to replace shear bolts from original corrado column, 2 mounting and one on lock barrel two: M8x22 - VW part no. N0147091 a new ignition switch from VW if you haven't replaced the original Corrado one before - 6N0 905 865 Look about right?? Getting my GF's old man is going to help me out as he's a mechanic and I wouldn't know where to start, so just getting the parts together.... Cheers guys

This happened to me, I fixed the fuse and then this happened. I found out its the actual contact strip the dial for the speed setting uses behind the plastic dial, youll see it if you pull it off. I tweeked it by bending the contact strip in different places with some pliers till they all came in contact on each speed and it worked! bit fiddly and irritating though. A new heater dial console went for £80 on ebay the other day htough so probably worth the effort! Bit weird it happened to wear out at the same time the thermal fuse went though? I didn't get it, must have blown the fuse with intermittent contact or something, beats me, Raddos :cuckoo: M

Awesome thanks for your help I'll ask a few few more scrappies then but thats not too bad new compared to a new corrado adjustable one! :cuckoo:

Cheers found it: 535 419 503H

Hi guys anyone who converted their adjustable corrado column to the one Davidwort did in his write up know the parts number for the polo column they used? The only second hand ones I can find have the intergrated UJ which is the wrong type so I might just have to but it new. Any help will be much appreciated. Cheers Oli

Yo guys have you tried just putting a bit of 3in1 oil on the key and leaving it in the ignition to soak in, mine was starting to go did this and now it's been fine for quite a while...

have you seen the old school advert on youtube, pretty funny....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-W9L0ps7ebU

Have you got an adjustable steering column, these can wear at the top universal joints(and bottom) and can exaggerate bumps etc on the road if worn.

Hey guys, I'm having play at the top end of my adjustable steering column like alot of you and after looking through all the posts what is the best option, bear in mind I'm mechanically useless and the polo column looks like a bit of a pain in the arse....although worth it by the sound of it. Is there are fixed column from the earlier raddos that will fit my 96 VR6 and is more compatible than converting the polo column. Or any other solutions...... Cheers Oli

the UJ is very much replaceable on it's own, some VWs aren't. the adjuster mech is part of the column and not fixable though, and I'm not sure on the adjustable column that the bottom bearing is replaceable, that may only be on the rare fixed column, which is what I'm going to replace mine with. Hi guys sorry I'm having the same trouble with play at the top of my column and am just trying to figure it out, although Dave seems to have sorted it with the Polo column is there anyway of securing the adjustable mech in place by welding it as I don't see why anyone would need the other positions unless there 3ft tall..... Sorry if this is a completely ridiculous suggestion, trying to get my head round it. Cheers Oli

Definately you lot are lucky I used to have an old school fiesta that blew out hot air constantly, that mixed with not having any power to sort out chavs in saxos was deeply depressing....
-
Cheers guys Ill get those checked out, but if that fails  Guess the play in it would be a bit more severe all the time if the actually rack needs replacing? But i dunno everyone seems to be having some kind of steering problems!! Thats what you get for having such a good driving car, you notice absolutely every little thing!!

Hey all suppose most people who own a raddo are pretty much driving fanatics so anyone got any favourite or cool videos you wanna share?? These are my favourites, pretty awesome: Rendezvous http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gWpjvAyDZo Pikes Peak run http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSrDD3tcibU

Haha  , Glad I'm not the only one suffering!!! Especially living in Surrey where traffic is a :censored: nightmare and sat sweating my bollocks off! good job I work in a band and get to drive home at 2 in the moroning under the cover of night! or I don't think I'd have any love left for the poor girl. had some pretty fun drives home on empty roads though in the early hours, thats whats its all about!!!(until the headlights go! :help: )

Anyone on here own the VR6 in Guildford up near Queen ELizabeth's Park, keep seeing it! Oli

Hi all, I'm having the exact same problem, it sounds like it anyway. As you said it's so hard to describe...... I've only had the lower ball joints and anti roll bushes replaced but it's still there. There is no play at all on smooth roads but as soon it gets a bit bumpy something doesn't feel right at all.... It is particurlarly noticeable when going over a gradual rise in the road and there is no force being put on the car for that split second you can really feel something giving with in the steering. It doesn't feel like it could be shock related though? or could it. Is really irritating as have only just bought it and apart from that it drives perfect!! You found any culprits yet? Excuse my vague understanding of anything mechanical!! Cheers Oli

Hey Ryan, I'm looking for some too as my leather seats just get too damn hot in the summer, you had any luck finding any reasonable ones yet? Cheers Oli
