The Monkey's Daily - Mk2 Golf GTi 8v [straight through MOT]
tony_ack replied to boost monkey's topic in Members Gallery
Never heard that this would screw up the ecu... From experience a screwed ecu would open all the injectors and flood the engine. An ecu is one of those things that either works or doesn't (well applies to simple ones like the digi), its not something that works a bit. Running rich could be many things, not least the fact that you replaced your back piping and may have got rid of an airleak that had been compensated for the last time it was setup. Get is on a gas analyer and set to 1.8 and take it from there. -
Another one in the same part of Sheffield this morning (or possibly the same one??) Looked black, 16v, plate was H***** but it may have been a private plate

Meguiars G220 Dual Action machine polisher - STILL AVAILABLE!
tony_ack replied to tony_ack's topic in Ebay and Misc
Good point - it was a while ago, but only fair... I'll drop him a PM -
Damn I'll get the bodyshop to look at the rust spot near the badge too in that case! To be honest, it was one of the bits that was going to be sorted anyway... if they have to do some welding near the seam, then it shouldn't be too much hassle if they have to weld a bit under the rust spot. Looks like it might be a back panel respray thoguh :-(

Oops, that's odd, they seem to display fine on my computers... current screen resolution is 1366x768, and they take up about half of the screen width? Anyone else have problems? I know they're quite high res pics, but I always assumed the forum resized them to the size of the frame they're contained in?

Meguiars G220 Dual Action machine polisher - STILL AVAILABLE!
tony_ack replied to tony_ack's topic in Ebay and Misc
This is now avaialble again as Hasan hasn't had time to collect, and another guy local to me has messed me about. Note that I can't find the large backing plate, but you will be able to get a Monza one off eBay for about £7 which will fit. Also, to compensate for the lack of a large backing plate, I am including three spot pads for the smaller backing plate, and also some sample sizes of Meguiars 105 and Autosmart Restore R1 (enough for at least 1 car), so you will have everything you need to get started!! I've checked the weight and I should be able to post for £10 via Royal Mail standard parcels. So it is £65 collected Or £75 posted -
More rust found at the weekend. To be honest, it's a rust hole that I knew about, as I'd already found it from the inside of the boot, but I guessed it would be a good idea to get the rear bumper off and have a proper look at the back panel. Like the rest of the car, the back panel is in decent condition (except for the hole). There is a fair sized bubble on the right rear quarter under the bumper, and a couple of rust spots on the visible part of the back panel, but they appear to be isolated. Not too sure what caused the rust hole. It's on the seam, but in a bit of an odd place, so I suppose it could be put down to bad sealing at the factory? The rust hole is going to be repaired at the bodyshop with some new metal to be welded in.

Renshaw project (probably going to sell / swap)
tony_ack replied to 24V Renshaw's topic in Members Gallery
Joni - Larkspeed in Leeds do them - they were the cheapest web price I found too. I rang them to see if they had them in stock before I went to collect them, and they sold them to me at the web price rather than the in store price. Alternatively, you can usually get the ones you have rebuilt by Koni. Jay - must admit I find the H&Rs and Konis a touch harsh for daily use compared to standard especially on the appalling Sheffield roads, though they are bearable (though I guess it's not the first time you've used this combo!) -
Dark Corrado parked behind Asda at Manor Top in Sheffield at about 3.30-4pm today, dozy me only saw it in my mirrors after I had driven past it so don't know what engine or age it was (looked like a later one?), or the exact colour.

The ultimate guide to the fiirst aid box and warning triangle!
tony_ack replied to Philstrm250's topic in Interior
Actually, got it off eBay irrc, but it was sealed in VW packaging, so obviously a new item. It was £8 off eBay, compared to about £20-25 new from VW, and ££££ for the original second hand ones Don't have a VW part no (and the car is garaged for the winter away from home so can't check), but here are some pics I took of it after it was unwrapped: -

Okay, I don't have any experience with early ones, but here is what I know.. Of the late spec cars, only VR6s have an armrest (unless you have leather in which case they all have the hump?) I'm not too sure where they go in the late ones. I would imagine that the early and late cars have the same 1st aid box. I have one in the MK2 Golf (secured by the boot bracket, and one in the Corrado (late VR6) and they're the same size. The one in the Corrado is actually a new replacement I bought from VW - a hard black box but still exactly the same size as the original (and all the stuff inside is still in date!) The kits from the '80s were all blue Kits from the '90s tended to be white (have seen white with red writing from a Corrado and white with green writing which is what's in the MK2) The new kits from VW are black Black and white are the same size, I imagine the blue one is too as both the white boxes and blue boxes are designed to fit in the MK2 Golf bracket. As for the contents, I don't know the differences, but safe to say that original ones are all going to be out of date, so not guaranteed to be sterile. As for triangles, I have one in the Corrado in the rear bench, and one in the MK2 Golf which straps to the back of the rear panel, and again, they're both exactly the same size. -
I've got loads of bits and pieces I've somehow managed to collect over the last year or so. Not asking much for any of it, prices are for collection, can post the smaller items at cost. -280mm front brakes off a VR6 but fit all models if you get the correct discs - includes carriers, callipers, discs (quite worn), pads and front flexis. One of the callipers needs a new dust seal - £40 -headlining re-trimmed in dark beige Alcantara, includes sunroof panel - £25 -Sunroof motor cover - beige, some dirty marks - £5 -Sunroof motor cover - grey, some dirty marks - £5 -Late driver and passenger inside door grab handles, some light scratches - includes mirror switch but the spring has gone - £7 -Late passenger side door handle surround - £4 -Grey fusebox cover - has a hole in it from a push button start - FREE TO COLLECT -Grey driver's lower dash trim - £5 -Black passenger footwell trim - £5 -Black driver's left/hand footwell trim (the small one on the left) - £5 -Passenger side interior door 'triangle' trim (sits between A-pillar, door card and glass), some light scratches in texture - £1 -Footwell vent ducting (from heaterbox to footwell vents) - £5 -Dash speaker grilles left and right - £5 the pair -Late VR6 handbrake cables from AVS - brand new and still in bag - £15 -Nearside electric window regulator and motor - £25 -Neaside inner tail light cluster - £5 (can include offside FOC but has a small crack in it) -Tailgate central locking actuator with backing plate - £3 -Pair of JBL 6x4 rear speakers (GTO6428) - brand new in box and never fitted - £15 -Classic green (LC6U) rear spoiler, various scratches - £8 -Black centre tunnel trim, including handbrake surround and lower gear lever surround. 2 fixing tabs on inner handbrake surround have broken, but Daves16v has a solution to this - £15 -Bare black dash - good overall condition, replaced as it did not have a bracket for the immobiliser box, and also some of the screw holes for the lower dash trim are slightly bigger (so new metal clips needed or bigger screws). Also, the stud securing the bottom of the centre of the dash had to be drilled out, so you'll need to replace with a bolt and nut. Finally, there is a bit of damage inside the dash where the air housing mates with the dash windscreen ventilation, but again easily fixable with a bit of fibreglass - FREE TO COLLECT -Grey boot carpet - floor carpet is very dirty but may clean up, turret carpets aren't great - FREE TO COLLECT Also a couple of MK2 Golf bits I still have: -5-slat GTI grille, some broken clips - £5 -7-slat GTI grille, some broken clips - £5 -GTI rear spolier - £5 -1.6/1.8 carb/early GTI downpipe - £5 -8v GTI Digifant rad fan cowling (just the cowling, not the fan) - £5 Pics available on request of any parts, offers welcome especially on multiple parts, may add more if I find it

Sadly, in this day of age, your options are... 1. Go to the police, they'll do very little and you risk retaliation from the family/scum 'friends'. If they were old enough you'd at least have the satisfaction of getting them a criminal record. 2. Speak to the family calmly and see if they're decent enough to pay up. If they refuse, not a lot you can do except go to the police. 3. Go and see the family all guns blazing, chance that they'll pay up but bigger chance that they'll go defensive and start a feud. 4. Collar the kids when you see them and give them a piece of your mind, but you'll probably get arrested. 5. See if you can arrange for an 'accident' to happen to the kid's bike when they're not looking. 6. Pay for the repairs yourself. Having been in a similar situation myself countless times over the last few years option 6 is the only one that really works. The problem is that people don't understand the value of things when everything they have is given to them and don't have to earn it. Unfortunately these days that applies to adults as much as kids.

Jay - what are the options for condensers? I'm looking for something that fits with no cutting of the slam panel if possible, and without pushing the radiator back. The car hasn't got aircon at all (yet) so I'd need brackets too.
-
You keep your rad, but need an aircon rad (condenser) to put on the front of it. MK3 condenser kind of fits but the pipes are in the wrong place. http://www.autoairglos.net/ - these guys may be able to help you find the correct rad but you need to make sure you still have your brackets to attach it to the radiator. Or alternatively, what I'm planning to do is just take it to an aircon specialist and ask them to install something that fits.

I'm incredibly tempted to get the Corrado covered now for weekend use, I'm really missing driving it! Footman James quoted me £380 with all mods declared, stored in the lockup overnight, on 3000 miles per year. Think getting it on the road again will be my 30th birthday present to me :-) Will also need to tax it, but may get 6 months so I can stagger the outlays for insurance and tax.

Looking for a diesel daily- budget up to £3k max
tony_ack replied to boost monkey's topic in General Car Chat
£3k (or even a more realistic £2k) is a nice lump to be able to spend on a car though, so you should get a decent MK4 for that. It would be nice to go and look at a potential new car without having to 'check for rust in the usual places'. The MK4 definitely has enough room for two twigs, and even a Big Stick if you're lucky enough to find one on your travels. -
Oil smoke when you boot it after overrun is a sign of worn stem seals (but hope it could still be something cheaper!). May be a chance to change the lifters at the same time and get rid of the tapping? Grille is looking good by the way :-) Nice wheels as well, though a bit too fussy for me, especially when it comes to cleaning! I keep promising my Corrado some MT90, but it's just so expensive... I put some MTL in the Golf last year and it made it silky smooth What's the stuff in the big VW bag in front of the MT90 in the pic?

Looks like you have your heart set on a MK4, so go with that! Personally I found the boot a little small for my needs (especially compared to the MK2/Corrado) but that may not be an issue for you. A friend used to have a GT TDI - he had no end of problems with it and sold it in the end, but then there are others that are very reliable. The PD engines need a bit more love than the old TDi units, but then again are a lot more refined. The MK4 is not the most nimble of cars in the world, but can be improved. I have still never had a car with working aircon - I was going to get an A4 with aircon, but when the one I got came up at the price it did I soon learnt I could live without. -
I got a couple of jacks from GSF a few years ago, 2 tonne rated. They weren't particularly expensive (£20-£30 each?), and aren't going to set the world alight but have been reliable enough so far. No rubber pads, but I use planks of wood with the jacks anyway. Car is lowered 30mm, and I sometimes have a bit of trouble getting them under the front with the wood as well. I'd probably look for a low jack if I was buying again, but it's not enough of a problem to justify replacing the ones I have. I have a couple of pairs of Halfords professional axle stands, and they're fine - had my old MK2 breaker propped up on them for a couple of weeks with no issues.

Still taxed until end of the month according to the DVLA

The MOT garage numpties broke the central locking on the MK2 so another day I was going to spend on the Corrado was spent on that instead. Still I had some time to start looking at the battery tray. There was rust around the clamp and also a bit more where one corner of the battery rests against the tray, and that was pretty much it. I've ground most of it out, but I'm going to give it another going over next week. The bonnet release is acting up a bit. It opens the bonnet okay, but the lever under the dash doesn't return to the closed position when you let go. Then, even if you push the level back yourself, when you close the bonnet, it only locks on the passenger side. It might be because I didn't put something back right when re-fitting the slam panel, but I'm not sure yet. I didn't have time to look at it today, but I took the grille off as a precaution before I closed the bonnet.

Completely disagree that it's not pretty - I love the MK2 styling and it looks similar to Bright Blue Metallic one of my favourite colours (though I suspect it's had a respray??). The standard MK2 handles well, not quite up there with a Corrado, but definitely more of a go-kart feel, which the VR6 may compromise a little. The VR6 is a relatively popular transplant, but wouldn't be the one I would go for, as the car loses a bit of its MK2-ness. They are more roomy than a Corrado, bit that's not an issue for a second car. I agree that the car is more dated than the Corrado - not only in looks but also in terms of trim and comfort. Value really depends on the condition of the car overall - I'd go for £2k assuming average condition (i.e. some rust), £3k for a minter. They tend to rust in similar places to the Corrado, but be wary of rust around the wiper blank and the fuel filler, and account for any potential rust under the plastic trims. Personally I would pick (and have picked) a Corrado, but as the missus has a MK2 I get the best of both worlds anyway.
