Flash Red 1993 VR6 - Sold on to the next owner

Started early. Good wash and towel dry. Clay bar the roof and the bonnet. Meguiars 3 Step system Paint cleaner Polish Wax Took a long time but it's nice and shiny now. Time for roast dinner, beer and Brazil v Cote D'Ivoire. -
Perhaps I'll go on a diet and empty the boot then. The spare wheel ,tools and jack make lots of rattly noises anyway. When I was a biker I thought it was funny that these guys would spend thousands on titanium exhausts, magnesium wheels, remaps etc on their sports bikes and still have big beer bellies.

Getting my VR6 into shape, improving the paintwork by giving it some love, brakes have been uprated, some suspension bits renewed and chains done new clutch, rebuilt gearbox, refurbed wheels and new tyres on the way. So I'm basically back to standard VR6 with better brakes which is great, loads of fun. But I really enjoyed the uplift in power from when it was running like a dog, with a misfire and about 40 bhp down. Without going massively Max Power, hoooooge turbo or nitrous oxide, what's the next thing to do? New "sports" exhaust? It will need a new zorst at some point so does this give it more "oomph"? BMC CDA? I understand they sound great. Or should I start saving to buy Dr Forinor's GTR off him instead?

Thanks to PROVR6 for arranging to come, coming, bringing the cash and generally making for a trouble free sale of some wheels. Good luck with the refurb. -

Guides were not too bad, striations (a word from my O-Level Geography days!) were clearly visible. Dave said "various cracks in top tensioner and guide but pad not too worn" it was one of those cases where once the gearbox came out I had invested over £200 in labour to that point so "might as well" get everything else sorted while we are there. Intention is to keep the car for a few years so for peace of mind and reliability sake it was worth it (I keep telling myself that!). -

The month of May saw some open wallet surgery - basically In the 8 months of VR6 ownership I have effectively bought the car again  but that's the joy of Corrado ownership. The make over was performed by the splendid chaps at DG Autotech and comprised Replacement of all the plastic water housings and transfer pipes, flywheel, timing chains and guides, all the chains tensioners, rocker cover gasket, inlet manifold gaskets etc etc and while we're in there we might as well change the clutch.stromlaufplan_gamma4.pdfDSC04067.jpg[/attachment:21wswve8]ETKA Corrado.pdfDSC04069.jpg[/attachment:21wswve8]stromlaufplan_gamma4.pdfDSC04072.jpg[/attachment:21wswve8]Corrado92.pdfDSC04074.jpg[/attachment:21wswve8] The main reason for doing all this work was the fact that the gear box was making a nasty noise when in first gear so the box was removed and stripped and this was found to be the culpritpassat climatronic wiring diags.pdfDSC04096.jpg[/attachment:21wswve8] Reverse idler gear selector spring was broken and allowing the gear to 'rattle' against the main shaft gear. Heaven only knows what damage was being done but the guys next door to DG are gearbox gurus and were able to sort it by replacing the gearset and bearings - effectively a rebuilt gearbox then.climatronic wiring-Golf from May 01.pdfDSC04097.jpg[/attachment:21wswve8]2.8l 24v Climatronic system.pdfDSC04098.jpg[/attachment:21wswve8] Then there was a brake upgrade. Got some Mk3 Golf brake calipers from eBaycalipers.jpg[/attachment:21wswve8] which scrubbed up well and were matched up with EBC pads, VW OE 288 discs, DG 288 stainless steel brake conversion lines. These have improved the braking no end and just squeeze under the 15 inch Speedlines. Some top mounts and bearings and rear axle bushes, re-sealing some areas underneath and an engine flush and top end treatment . . . . . . Looks almost identical from the outside (apart from the bigger brakes) but the driving experience is much, much better. Thanks to Dave and Graham. -

Getting some Speedlines refurbed soon and am unsure what to do. Powder coat or paint? Not 100% sure what a powder coated finish is to be honest. (I know that sounds a bit :camp: )
-
So it's not just me that does that then!
-
That one didn't sell on the program but was provisionally bought by "an army major in afghanistan". I enjoyed the original Fiat 500 bought in Italy that broke down and was trailered back. Was fun seeing the massive Ed China working on it.
-
Picked up the wheels today - 4 straight Speedlines for £30 in the end - plus a longish drive to be fair but that was good fun in the Corrado 8) So now on the hunt for a cost effective way of getting them looking tidy.
-
Mine was a bit like this, change the leads (well Dave at DG did) and it was better. But also I had a problem with one of the engine sensors (camshaft position sensor?) that meant I was down about 40 bhp.
-
Perhaps the easiest thing to do is stick to one set of wheels and tyres . . . .
-
Toying with the idea of new wheels and perhaps keeping the old ones for winter wheels and putting winter tyres on them. Having been caught out on tyres sizes before :bad-words: I was wondering what size choice there is. For example I'm on 15 inch Speedlines with 205/50/15 tyres. Tyres in this size are £80 ish where as in 195/50/15 some makes are only £40. Sure there is some allowance for budget Asian makes versus premium makes but what's the deal with tyre sizes. I know this is a bit of a numpty question . . . .
-
Based on three quotes from local mobile refurbers it is cheaper to buy some new wheels, take them to these guys and have a decent job done!
-
They look pretty decent (to my untrained eye) so am tempted to get 4 speedlines and get them refurbed then get my tyres swapped over then flog my speedlines. Hmmm I sense a plan formulating here . . .
-
Was toying with different wheels, bought some by mistake that had the wrong sized tyres, sold them on again. Now liking the 15 inch speedlines again but they are a bit tatty. One especially is a fairly badly kerbed. Been thinking of buying a couple or more speedlines to switch things around but that is ball ache and can't find really good speedlines for the budget I have. So I turn to the idea of refurbing what I have. Anyone any experience of refurbers in Surrey? Ideally looking for someone to do a mobile service as I don't have the tools / facilities to remove all the wheels at once. Heard of wicked wheels (as seen on Wheeler Dealers) b ut they are looking for £65 per corner PLUS VAT. www.wheeldoctor.biz quote from £45 per corner. So any recommendations please?
