Agree with above two posts. I believe ezzi bleed can damage master cylinder seals if the air pressure used is too high, I always found that I got much better results with the two man method. I would have another go but with the two man method. My 12 year old will be learning this method very soon as I have a caliper to change!

Hi, Sounds like there is a problem with the residual fuel pressure. If it drops too low the pump has to build pressure back up so engine takes longer to start, once correct pressure is re-established engine runs fine. If stopped and restarted when warm you do not normally notice anything wrong, however if the engine cools down pressure has had time to drop so engine is difficult to start. Do you have the Bentley manual? If you do look at section 24-160 engine code PG or page 24-460 engine code AAA. If you do not have the manual I can email you a PDF of the relevant section. This advises how to check the pressure regulator and possible issues if the regulator is ok. Possible issues listed are line connections are tight, O rings or seals on fuel distributer leak, fuel injectors leak or fuel pump check valve leaks. On my old 1.8 16V when the fuel accumulator failed, resulting in the residual fuel pressure dropping the car had to be cranked to start and initially would be lumpy at idle until fuel pressure had been restored. If restarted when warm I would not notice any issues if left for a while the starting issue returned. Hope this helps.

Sounds like the best plan. Would be interested to know who the bodyshop is as if other corrado owners are happy with them I would like to talk to them about the A pillars.

Corrado MOT Fail - excessive play in steering column... PASSED
Hatton VR6 replied to Jim's topic in Drivetrain
Hi, Looks like it should be fairly straight forward. The only thing I have normally found with steering columns is the shear bolts, usually a pair of mole grips does the job. Have you got some replacements so you can tighten them to the correct torque? Bentley shows some on the diagram + a lock washer for the steering wheel that they recommend you replace. It looks a very similar setup to the Mini steering column. I trust you have a copy of Bentley. Just come across this mob, may be useful in future http://sanburn.co.uk/index.html vw breakers in Coventry not contacted them but will save for later use. Have you got the Passat 88 - 91 Haynes guide? Gives a guide to remove the steering column, drawings look very similar to those in the Bentley book. -
Corrado MOT Fail - excessive play in steering column... PASSED

Hi Jim, Had an old mini fail on excessive play between the column and the column tube back in 1984, it was justified the bushes that held the column in place were worn if you have a copy of Bentley I had to replace the equivalent of the support ring in 48.2. Having said that I have never had any steering column issues with the 8 VWs & Audis that Mrs VR6 and I have owned. If you are convinced that there is nothing wrong it may be worth taking it to Vastec in Warwick and explain the situation. Ask Paul who owns the business if there is an issue and if it would fail an MOT before putting it in for MOT. I have done this with our cars before putting it in for MOT. Paul is very helpful has not charged if he has just checked error codes and put warning lights out and always done a good job. Paul used to work for Listers before starting Vastec 2 years ago. Let me know if you decide to go down there. I would be happy to go down there on Saturday morning or later on on Friday afternoon with you. When does the old MOT expire? I am not sure on what the law states if a car fails an MOT before old one expires. Bentley says that the adjustable height column can not be disassembled, so that may mean a new column. ---------- Post added at 11:30 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:25 PM ---------- Just noticed that there is a bearing at the bottom of the column, again in 48.2 of Bentley, that could also be an MOT fail if seriously worn. -

Great day out - Thank you to the committee for organising it -
On my old mk2 golf the pump whined for about a month before it failed, with the whining getting louder, it eventually failed in an area where you would not want to break down!

Hi, I would doubt if you have distorted the camshaft. The idea of the tightening / loosening sequence is to minimise the stresses on the cam shaft when fitted or removed as it will not sit flat with the valves pushing up on the lobes on the cam shaft. For example the sequence is used to prevent clamping both ends down and the valves pushing up in the centre and then stress being induced when you then clamp the centre down as the cam shaft may alter how it sits as you clamp it down. If you tighten from the centre out diametrically this reduces these stresses as the outer ends of the shaft are free to move as it is fastened into place. I would loosen the all the caps in the correct sequence and then torque them down with a manual torque wrench in the correct sequence so that you have not induced any extra stresses into the cam shaft. This will allow the shaft to sit correctly when tightened. It may also be prudent to ensure that there is no tension on the timing chains when you torque the camshaft back down.

The body shop in Bidford is Bodycraft http://www.bidfordbodycraft.com. I did not use them in the end.

Hi Jim, I get the feeling from your post that you have decided what you want to do! I guess the sensible thing to do is to buy the best house you can afford with a good garage as one of the previous posts said. I guess fixed rate mortgages will not be around at the current low rates for ever. A house should also be an appreciating asset as well. When my old 16 valver was about 10 years old (circa 2000) it needed some bodywork doing after being hit in a Birmingham car park. I went to 2 bodyshops for quotes one went all over the car and quoted £3000.00 I got a quote from a body shop in Bidford on Avon, recommended by Listers in Stratford. I can not remember their name,(but Bidford is small) quoted £500 to do an acceptable job. If Listers were sending people there I figured that they must do a reasonable job. I guess there may also be options to sort the bodywork issues, buy good wings and doors painted in the right colour from a breaker. I did find a breaker in Sharlow who broke Corrados and then sold the bits, unfortunately his details were on my old mobile that spectacularly failed, I could find him again if needed. Wings (£50.00 for a wing) are reasonably easy to change, doors are not too difficult with two people and you could then do a budget related spray work or tackle the job yourself to keep the rust at bay, until funds improve. When I parted with the valver I also took three or four other facts into consideration, the engine had 170000 miles on it and the big ends had gone. I also needed a reliable daily driver as I now had a 85 mile round trip to work, and now married and we had 2 labradors that could not go in the corrado comfortably. Let me know if you would like me to track any of these people down.

Hi Jim, Some good advice here. I can understand where you are coming from financially. If you find a good body shop they should be able to match the paint, but even with the best paint match you will probably be able to see which areas have been painted under certain light conditions. Try and see a sample of the body shops work about 12 months after painting. Back in about 1990 I had to fit a new wing to my golf. I found what I thought was a good body shop looking at their work, all perfect paint matches. My wing had a perfect match however 9 months later the wing had loads of stone chips, with about 2 -3 on the rest of the car, with the wing needing repainting again. I would be interested to know which body shops you have looked at. I went to see Westgate Classics the other week with a view to sorting the A pillars seemed a good body shop. I just need to find the time to start stripping the car!

A later version was published with a supplement of 95 pages covering revised ignition system on VR6 that came in around 1993, automatic transmission shift lock, new air conditioning system and additional wiring diagrams.

Have you checked the engine coolant? If the head gasket has gone then oil could be leaking into the cooling system. I have had 4 VWs with 1.8 8V and 16V. The 2 8vs never needed any oil. The latter 16V started using oil at about 120000 as the valve guide oil seals started to fail.
-
Low oil pressure, probably caused by low oil level. Reason you get it when cornering hard on islands is the oil pick is on the offside (was on my old 1.8 16V) and what oil is left in the sump will surge to the nearside leaving the oil pickup uncovered, picking up air. If the car is serviced properly and regularly and the oil is very low there is probably an oil leak somewhere. Do you park it regularly in the same spot and is there oil on the floor? It could also be an internal oil leak, at about 120000 my old valver was using oil as the valve guide oil seals had gone. At first you just noticed it burning a bit of oil when started after standing over night. As Supercharged said do not drive it until you've topped up or fixed whatever the issue is as when it is beeping the big end bearings, camshaft etc will not be lubricated properly increasing the wear of these components. After topping up the oil regularly check the oil level to see if you are loosing any. Let us know what you find.

Just received Julys subscription copy of Practical Classics, should be out in the shops in 2-3 days. It has a 4 page buying guide on this great coupe featuring kipvw's yellow 1.8 16v car. Good to see the car mags acknowledge what we already knew that this is a real classic!

Hi, I have hired car trailers from BLT trailers CV8 3EL Tel 07831 502479 before not sure of current prices, was £50.00 for a day in 2007/8. Will use them again when I have sorted the body work on the C and I need to get it sprayed. Yell.com lists other trailer hire companies, including Poulter Trailer hire on Princes drive ind estate in Kenilworth. My A4 avant has a towbar, so can tow it if the weights are OK, not sure what you are planning to move, I will PM my mobile number if you need any help. Hatton VR6.
