Doesnt really matter if they are early or late, or partly broken. Im looking at playing around with fitting projectors or something similar. So the main body could do to be intact and the reflector, although doesnt matter if its not reflective anymore. Give me a shout if you have anything Cheers

Ricks VR6 - Rebuild VR or 24v? advice please
rickdonald replied to rickdonald's topic in Members Gallery
Ye I think that's my problem, I couldn't imagine me doing it myself because as I say its a daily driver and I don't think I have the skills either! one thing I would do though if I were to get a conversion, I would be to keep the 2.9 and rebuild it myself just to get the experience. I would love to go for the R32 engine but I think id be pushing the upper limit of my budget for the 24v 2.8, you say avoid the AUE engine? which one is this out of? I was looking at a BDE engine, this any better? Sorry for all the questions, just trying to get as much info as I can before I try and decide what to do. Have been looking at a couple of other build threads with conversions, think I should stop though because its putting all sorts of ideas in my head! -
Ricks VR6 - Rebuild VR or 24v? advice please

Really? I think a 3.2 would be a bit steep on the insurance front, concerned slightly about the 2.8 24v tbh. Also I think im looking for reliability and cheap/readiness of spare parts rather than outright power, Especially with it just been FWD. out of interest do you have any idea how much i'd be looking for a 24v conversion as I really dont know? I did find a website from germany http://www.mikmotoren.de/ Who do an exchange by the looks of it for around 1500 euro, and that for a near enough fully rebuilt 2.9 VR6, that was another idea, but again for the cost.... i just dont know -

Just after a bit of advice off those who know better. The cars just passed over 170k, and with no evidence of chains being done I'm now looking at getting a good bit of work done to it before I push my luck too much. I was considering going down the route of chains, tensioners, clutch and a head rebuild as its using a bit of oil (probably 1 litre per 1000miles, with Millers 5w50) and I think its the valve stem seals. I was thinking of booking it into stealth as it seems to be the place to go, but then I'm a little worried as if its getting on for 200k, whats the bottom end going to be like, I dont really want to spend all that money sorting the chains and head out only for the bottom to start causing problems sooner or later. So then second plan was to maybe go down the 2.8 24v route, I have have a good search around on the 24v thread and anything else I can find but cant really find an answer to how much I should really be budgeting for a conversion? I would love to do all the work myself, or even go down the route of buying a second VR engine and rebuilding it myself, but the car is a daily driver, it would take me far to long to do, and havent really got the space. Has anyone got any advice or experience in this? Cheers -
Hi mate, don't know if this will help at all but mine started to blow this fuse a few weeks ago too, I noticed it happens when I turned the heater dial all the way to "hot". I'm not sure why i'm just guessing its shorting out somewhere, however I have just been playing with illuminating my heater dials so I think it may be related to that. Might be worth a shot though. I haven't had time to take stuff apart though so cant really help much more, im just driving around without the heater on full!

Fitted another coil-pack today, second hand although in good condition, or looks it anyway (no cracks). But I have put it on and taken it for a drive and its still no better, in-fact a little worse. It seems to be really struggling when I put my foot down on the motorway. Just seems to start higher up the rev range when your at full throttle. Taken off the leads and checked the resistances, all seem ok ranging from about 5.6 kOhm to about 6.3. although lead 4 with is 6.3kOhm seems to have a bit of a bad contact at the plug end. The leads seem quite "stiff" like they have been well and truly baked in the engine bay for a while, so I'm guessing they are fairly old., so not sure what to do, as in look at getting some "blue igniters" leads, or whether to check anything else. Any suggestions?

Cheers for the help guys, they are up for auction now on the classifieds section, although I have put a buy it now price on as well as the auction, but it doesn't seem to be showing it? any-body any ideas? Decided to go back to my old Speedlines, to get a bit of money together to look at getting the timing chains done! But thought I'd give them a quick refurb and coat of paint just to see how it looked. Really happy with how they came out, but not sure how long it will last as I had to do it while the tires where still on and just masking them over. So it may start flaking when the weather gets colder, but I'll worry about that when it happens. -
Had a look at the coil-pack and leads at weekend, and from the looks of it the coilpack has gone, seems to be a common issue looking round on the forum the last few days, with the weather deteriorating. Had a couple of nice cracks around the side, and from doing a bit of reading around it seems a bit too far gone to try and fill with epoxy to repair. So will have to get on looking for another. Although just taking it off, giving it a clean and filling the gaps with a bit of WD-40 and then covering in Vaseline, it seems to be running a lot smoother. Cheers for the help guys

Ok so you have got me worrying now, how badly would it run if the cams had slipped? I would have thought it would run badly all the time, if at all? Im going to have a look at the leads and coilpack when I get time, then I guess time to bite the bullet and take the rocker cover off to inspect what sort of state the tensioners are in. Would you recomend me to tackle the chains myself? If I budget myself a weekend + monday & tuesday using the guides on here and VWVortex? considering I have never really done anything that in depth before, haven't got a garage to work in so it will have to be done on the drive, but like to think I'm not a complete muppet with a spanner. I know its a ridiculously open question, but just looking for advice from people who know. Cheers for the help

Yer I have read quite alot into the chain replacement and realise it is no excuse that it isnt noisy, it's just purely as "fishwick" says a need to budget for their replacement. Also my Plugs are the BKR5EKU, again from a recommendation from "fishwick". I would have thought if the timing had slipped at all though it wouldn't run so smoothly throughout the rest of the rev range. I will have a look at the ht leads and coilpack and and look for any service history on them, and then have a look see how much it's going to cost to do the chains and whether I would feel confident enough to do them myself! Thanks for the help guys

Ha, nooo dont say the "C" word! I dont think they have mate, or at least there is no history of it. Which I know is bad because its getting on for 160,000 now. It is on my list of things to do (along with everything else), but its going to be a while before I can get the time to take it off the road for that long to do them, and im psyching myself up to do it myself. Dont have the money really to take it to a garage. Why do you say chains anyway? they arent noisy and dont rattle, which I know doesnt mean that nothing is wrong. Do you think it could be related?

Hi, Just after a little advice, about a fortnight ago my VR started to what feels like a misfire, at around 4200rpm when accelerating. It doesnt happen every time but seems to be more so in higher gears, eg 3rd, 4th or 5th. Its most noticable "on my private road" in 5th, it really struggles to get past 4200rpm, just really stutters and judders/misses, then its fine when you take your foot off. In lower gears there is a slight judder as it misfires around 4200rpm, then seems fine higher up the rev range. I have had a look on VAG-COM but there is nothing recorded (kept the engine running after it happend, as to keep the codes in memory). I'm just after abit of advice on what it could be? or if anyone has had similar, I have had a search and found other posts but nothing I can really relate to or which gives a solution/ideas etc. The plugs have been changed about 9 months ago, and the ones I took out where fine, (no or very little oil on them) also at the same time I replaced the fuel filter. Not to sure on the leads and coilpack, am I right in thinking I can just check the resistance of the leads to see if any of those are faulty? If so what values am I looking for? I know its not a massive problem, and most of the time isn't noticable becasue its not driven that hard. Its just when the urge does take you, and you press on, its abit worrying and dis-heartening! Cheers for any help Rick

Ricks VR6 - Rebuild VR or 24v? advice please
rickdonald replied to rickdonald's topic in Members Gallery
Aright mate, yer each group of 4 or 5 was in series between the +ve and -ve, meaning about 3v or 2v across each. saying that though, they were still very bright, didnt burn out, but were bright, so when doing it again i think i will add another to each track, or even a resistor to dim them down abit. ---------- Post added at 03:30 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:29 PM ---------- Don’t know if this is the right place to ask but I’m thinking of selling my 17” Speedlines, but have no idea what type of price to put them up for! I’m tempted to put them on e-bay but can’t really be bothered with time wasters etc. So was wondering if anyone had any sort of idea or comments? The wheels are all in good condition with some slight kerbing on two of them, and also a couple of scratches/scuffs around the centre from tightening wheel bolts (and slipping). Two tyres have loads of tread (1 x Falken and 1 x cheap one), and two (Rainsports) have about 3-4mm on them. The wheels are 5x100, ET48 and Center-bore 58.1, although I have all the right spacers (8mm), spigot rings and wheel bolts to fit them straight to a VR. (pictures on pg.1). Any advice would be great! Cheers
