Looking at the cable end that attaches to the gear stick I'm assuming there is something missing from inside the circular end. Also when the end is attached to the gear stick there is a lot of play before the cable/rod moves.

Thanks for the feedback. I tried to take some photos but it's hard to get an angle that shows what's wrong. I can't see any plastic parts, but there are small broken bits of plastic sitting below. All I have is the main gear lever shaft with a pin sticking out of it where the connection goes and nothing else. Can it be fixed with a washer and split pin or do I need anything else. Sorry I can't give any more info but it's hard to see what's going on in there.

I've been having some bad luck recently, a few weeks back I had brake failure but sorted that out ready to take a drive up to Brecon with some mates on the bank holiday. Just as I got to a roundabout in Chepstow to meet up with everyone I stopped, went to put it in gear and the gear stick went floppy and wouldn't select any gears. So I put on the hazard lights and had a look at the gear stick mechanism to see if I could tell what had gone wrong. I could see that the connector was sitting in there not attached to anything. I've never had to play around with the gear stick before and couldn't see where it was meant to attach. At this point I was stuck in gear in the outside lane of an A road with more people ignoring the fact I had my hazard lights on thinking that beeping their horn at me may magically fix any problems I had. Sadly It didn't but luckily a mate was just down the road so came and helped me push it to the other side of the road so it was out of the way. I gave breakdown recovery a call and a guy turned up and managed to get the connector back where it belongs and said it was the forward and back selector and it should have something to stop it slipping off which was missing. So put it on the back of the truck to take me home as it would probably just detach itself again. I've had a look and there are broken plastic fragments at the bottom of the case and I can see where the connector attaches to the gear stick but cant work out whats broken. Is there meant to be a cir-clip, split pin or something else on the end to stop it slipping off?

I have tried to dispute it through paypal but because it was over 45 days since I made the payment they did not pursue it. I paid by credit card through paypal so hopefully I can do a chargeback to get my money back.

I'll try that tomorrow, thanks

I've got all the stuff to sort the rear brakes out and some mk4 callipers off ebay that I've tidied up and painted red, because red brakes work better. Slight problem with the handbrake cable though, the nipple isn't big enough to be held by the handbrake mech on the calliper, it just slides through. I'm not sure if it's because of an aftermarket handbrake cable or a different mech on the calliper. Anyone else had problems with this or recommend a handbrake cable with a nice big nipple :fondle:

Did you get a refund in the end? I have been told by Iamwagon that my payment is being refunded and the money left their account almost a week ago, but still no sign of it on my end.
-
I'm on a bit of a budget so will probably go for some cupro-nickel pipes from http://www.brakepipes2go.co.uk/ as they supply lengths with unions attached.
-
I am going to get all the stuff to make up new lines for the rear. Probably best to do all the lines I can as they are starting to show their age and I get peace of mind knowing they shouldn't split again for a while. It's kind of good timing because I bought some mk4 callipers the other week that need to be fitted as well.

I pulled the heat shield off and was greeted with this. I'm a bit ****ed off they didn't notice it in the MOT, but it was hidden behind the heat shield.

On mine the heat shield is the only thing covered in brake fluid so I'm guessing it's the hard line that runs under there. I'm just about to try and get it off now to investigate.

Good job I didn't have a fire as well. I keep meaning to get a fire extinguisher to keep in the car but never get around to it. I had an MOT a few weeks back and got an advisory on 'rear brake pipes with slight corrosion', thought it would be fine for a while though. Sorry if I have got anyone paranoid about their brakes now.

I've just had a full on pedal to floor and nothing happen brake failure. Luckily I was off the motorway and just going slow at the time but it's scary to think what could have happened. I saw some smoke from the rear/side when I pressed the brake pedal and there's a load of brake fluid on the rear heat shield so looks like the line going under there is broke. Has this happened to anyone else on here?

I am also having a problem with Iamwagon. I paid for a splitter on 5th of March which he said got stuck in the local depot because the address got wet and unreadable, so was sent out again. This splitter ended up getting lost in the postal system and I never received it. He said he was going to send another one out, after waiting a while he hadn't sent it. I have asked for a refund and he said he will sort it out, but I'm still waiting. ---------- Post added at 8:38 PM ---------- Previous post was at 8:35 PM ---------- I am also having a problem with Iamwagon. It's never straightforward and simple when working with corrados. I'll chop off the tabs, see how it's going to fit, then go from there. Thanks

I'll try my best to make it if any more South Wales meets are organised, I don't see many 'rados around, but know there's a few around the area This may be of interest as well http://www.facebook.com/events/489646354415537/ -
Thanks, I'll see if I can move the bottom tabs on the weekend without glueing my hands to the grill.

I've currently got an aftermarket 2 slat grill with eyebrow which is faded grey and doesn't look the best. I bought a nice 3 slat grill with badge on ebay off a 90 16v and thought it would fit straight on to my 91 g60. VW dont make life that easy though because the bottom tabs are in the wrong place. That doesn't seem to much of a problem though, reading about on here people have cut the bottom tabs off and re-glued them to fit in the bumper slots. Before I butcher a perfectly good grill can someone confirm the top tabs will line up because I haven't seen any threads mentioning them, and will the grill line up fine?

Hi, Have you still got the handbrake gaiter and handle? Thanks, Scott
-
It should be above the starter motor. On mine someone had broken off the connector bit so it wasnt obvious where the loose connector plugged in. http://the-corrado.net/showthread.php?60450-Help-identifying-unplugged-connector&p=766964&viewfull=1#post766964

I've just put it in the spotted thread before I noticed this post. There is a poor quality screen grab on there, if you squint a bit you may be able to identify it. http://the-corrado.net/showthread.php?44058-Corrado-Spotting!-Was-it-you&p=925290&viewfull=1#post925290

Thanks Stone, I was trying to pull that bit up yesterday so was kind of half there. I just pushed it down then lifted up the door lock pin and the door opened by the handle. I've sprayed some wd40 on the mechanism now and it opens fine from inside and outside. I guess it was a one off glitch that happens, but probably a sign something is about to fail. I'll see how it goes now, hopefully it will carry on working and I wont have to take it apart to see what's going wrong.

Hi, I've never had a problem with the door handles/lock before but from reading around looks like a common thing to go. I tried opening the drivers door earlier today and it didn't open, the central locking popped up the pin but there is no tension on either the inside or outside handle like something has disconnected. I've done some searching and found out you can get to the mechanism through the gap in the window, so tried that with some hooked metal but not really sure what needs to be pulled/pushed to get the door to open. I've found this diagram and have been trying to pull '28' and pulling up on a black lever which is number '7' I think. There is also a funny shaped metal bracket that pivots which I have tried. Can anyone point me in the right direction to open the door so I can get the mechanism out to take a look and fix and not have to keep climbing in through the passenger side.
