  1. My insurance basically said they did not insure cars which were in any way modified. I'm not certain but I think that was Highway Insurance who are very "cost effective" (cheap). I belive I am quite a low risk living where I do and being an old-git. I will be paying the extra, moving to another insurer and certainly cannot recommend them.
  2. Think I've found the problem. One of the engine mounts was loose ! Thanks All
  3. Cheers, I am not convinced it is the ECU because "Jiggling" the wires at tha Airflow meter seems to cure this. Thanks for the reply though.
  4. Hi Guys anyone got any thoughts on this. Every now and again I lose power completely. Engine still running, after about a second it comes back with full on power. Quite a jar to the car. It will do this every ten or twenty minutes. If I stop and "jiggle" the wires on top of the airflow meter the engine will behave perfectly for a few days before it starts off again. Vag - Com gives the error "Wire to the Air Meter shorted intermittantly to earth" I have replaced the airflow meter (and the cam position sensor) and had the wiring loom to the air flow meter checked by an auto electritian. Im getting very p.....d off. Can anybody help. Please.
  5. I Just remembered the spring on the VR are (new)VW Original Equipment for a VR.
  6. The set cost £400 from memory but I couldn't get my insurance company to accept TA Koni's on HR springs. At the time I needed to get the car on the road ASAP so I had no choice. This is all from memory - It was a stressfull time. Cheers
  7. I tell you, I thought I was just driving faster with the VR but when I went back to the 1.8 I could take "sharp" corners 10mph faster without trying.
  8. I have replaced the suspension on the VR back to insurance frendly jap aftermarket gear. It now goes round corners like a boat not like the 16v which goes round like its on rails (Bilstien I think) I noticed the clearance round the rear wheels on the VR is much bigger although the front is about the same. I measure the following to top of strap loop which goes through the rear bumper to the road. The 1.8 measures 28 cm The VR6 measure 36 cm Scary! Would someone else do that measure for either car to confim that this could be the problem? Is it possible to fit the suspension incorrectly to create this height (36cm) What do you think?
  9. Hi all, Happy new year. Time to spend more beer tokens on the VR :) I have an intermitant problem with my "Cam Position Sensor (G40)" and have had two different sensors supplied so both being incorrect ! Has anyone got any idea what the correct part number for this is. Also its looking like I'm coming up on needing a MAF Sensor Thanks Anton
  10. Cheers, I got mine pretty much next day. Excellent Service. Thanks again. Anton

    RadWeld ?

I have a pin hole radiator leak (Stone Chip?) and it as been suggested that I put in radweld however I am nevouse what they would do to my VR6 engine. What do you think ?
  12. Slightly different problem, the boss that holds the centre cog broke, I fixed it with a bolt and lots of epoxy but now the white light reflector will not fit. Can I live without this, or should I make the effort and fab up a new one ? Cheers
  13. I noticed the RAC use 15 years as a minimum age for their classic car insurance, and lowering the mileage (to 2000) mades very little difference on my 14 year old. :(

    Heater Matrix

Thanks for the scary photo :pale: I have already planned a mild ICE upgrade but would like you to clarify, are the cable ties to hold the wires in place while the dash is out or to reinforce the existing loom? and similarly the duct tape. I see your point about the windscreen though. Thanks Again Anton

    Heater Matrix

Hi, The latest episode into VR6 ownership has been my heater matrix as failed. So now I'm powering up to take the dash out  I just wanted to know if I should be doing any other jobs while it's out. I'm soooo glad I still have my 1.8 Thanks.
  16. Thanks all, Just for the record the car was lowered 60mm on an inter alloy kit that was in very poor condition. Following a long talk with my Insurance broker (don't laugh) who said, koni / HR, would increase my excess by £150 this part year but was unsure about how it would affect my next quote. I have decided to go back to VW. I am nervous about aftermarket sets after seeing the state of the Interalloy and want my new car sorted quick. Thanks Again
  17. Anyone know a source for good used springs for a VR, is there a list of breakers anywhere ?
  18. Thanks for the quick responce. ECP do not seem to have VR6 springs in the cataloge but GFS have them at Front £42 Back £27 but say its the same as a golf 3! The speed bumps here are extreme (illegal?) but I must admit I mostly catch on the sloping driveways the worst.
  19. Hi Guys. I've just bought my VR6 :D . However on meeting my first speed bump, I get an unpleasant scraping noise (:D , I've now got a VR6). This speed bump was crossed many many times in my 1.8. I now realised that my new car has been dramatically lowered. Now that I have had this inspected it seems at sometime in its history someone has fitted some lowering springs. My machanic is not happy with this because they are not making use of the dampers travel? or are loose? or something. I cannot live with this because of the sheer number of speedbumps and the condition of the road around where I live. I am therefore looking for a set of standard height springs or some aftermarket system with will bring my ride height up to standard. I got a price from VW of around £60 per spring + Vat ( :) ,That smile is beginning to fade). Any advice would be greatfully accepted. Thanks :D

  21. Hi All. I am new to this so let me know if I do something wrong. One of my rear wheel arches paintwork is beginning to bubble with a small amount of rust under the paint around the edge. I have been advised to do something about it before it spreads. My mechanic explains to me that what he will do is cut rusted section and replace it with a piece cut from a new? wheel arch however he as asked me to souce one as he as been unable to from his ususal supplier(s). Anyone got any ideas who would have this part. Thanks
