Bloody Highway Insurance!

Recommended Posts

Just sorting out the insurance for getting Coullstar's car on Saturday, and they've put my premium up by £79! This policy has been transfered across (via my Passat) from a 2.0l 16v to a 1.8l 16v which is a lower insurance group! They said it was because of 'modifications made to the vehicle' (Suspension and Exhaust ffs) and they had the cheek to try and charge me £50 'in case I made any more modifications.'

W*nkers!

So, I'm definately ditching Chris Knott and moving in May when the renewal is due, Adrian Flux any good? (Anyone that doesn't deal with Highway (robbery) Insurance is a good start....

Cheers,

Tom

I found Adrian Flux a bit of a pain. They tried telling me my alarm wasn't a cat 1 alarm & I would have to get a new one to qualify for the discount - oh and also giving me the number of their recommended fitters - trying to get more money out of me! I then called a few other companies & they said it was fine, so cancelled with Adrian Flux on the spot (which I then had to pay £40 for the pleasure of!). I ended up going back to HIC who I was with the year before & have proved no hassle at all. Very good customer services 2.

I am with Brentacre who have been good, but are underwritten by Highway. To be honest insuring a modified car is a minefield and i'm a bit bored of it.

I tried HIC but their prices were apalling - 23 year old with 3 years NCD, no accidents or points - "£2,400 to insure your Corrado sir!"

Gee... lemme think about that..... :p

You must just live in a good area.. Brentacres estimate for my renewal is £900 FC and that will hopefully be 24 with 4 years NCD.

I'm gonna ditch the Rado and buy a Golf GT TDI next year.. the costs are driving me up the wall ;)

Move to, e.g., Aberdeen, where my LHD US-import Rado (something most insurances don't like at all) only cost the previous owner £300 FC

Coventry, as we know, is a sh*thole for crime, driving up insurance prices

when I decide to let mine got I think I'll be going for a mk4 20v T. Should cost me less in the long run, as I vow not to mod it anymore than a chip....... he says unconvincingly

from bitter current experience, AVOID FLUX like the plague...

They've just ignored my agreed value and offered me £2083 for my corrado...

HIC have gone mad with their prices and were trying to charge me through the roof for my renewal after saying that they weren't going to honour an earlier quote I'd got from them...

I think I need to find a new insurance company this time.... :(

even my quotes for the beast are lower than that...

22 years old, 3 yrs NCB, 3 points, no limited mil, agree value of £**,***, and all mods declared (i have a few...) saying it runs 300bhp (but it will be more like 360-390bhp) - £1600 fully comp... that was a Brentacre quote done in April I think. Still alot of cash but it will be fast...try insuring a ferrari for £1600 :!:

Its probably because you live up in Norfolk, which IIRC, is listed as 'A' for insurance - ie nothing ever gets nicked ;)

Coventry is, on the whole, E rated.. I guess if I moved up to Norfolk (areas around Hunstanton, Brancaster are all very nice but a bit quiet!) my insurance would probably go down by about 30-40%

Will Elephant not cover you?

Im with elephant and from what i could gather they will only insure upto 6-7 modifications (depending what they are) and after that they will either sting u with a rediculous price or just say no.

I thought agreed value policies were underwritten by an external company - your primary insurer pays you their going rate, and the agreed-value part of the policy (usually underwritten by someone else) pays the difference, up to your agreed value.

360bhp, 650kgs, 22 with 4 years no claims - £500 fully comp. To insure the engine in its original car in original state of tune - £3500

Got to love kit car insurance - double the power, half the weight and cheap as chips.

Hehe quite possibly... :)

More likely it's because kit cars on average get kept in garages, trailered to race tracks, then trailered home again. People who spend upwards of 300 hours building a car are more likely to take care of it. (Ironically the average person has to work for between 500 and 1000 hours to actually PAY for their normal car, yet they still don't take as much care of them!!)

Note that these are all sweeping generalisations, and therefore any exceptions to the rule only serve to *support* my argument!! :-P

Agreed valuations seem to be getting more and more of a marketing tool, as I'm currently in a sort of dispute with HIC regarding the value on my Mk1 Rocco. The valuer rightfully said that he gets done by Ford Escort chavs declaring their rustbuckets to be worth millions, and yet that attitude is then automatically assumed to be prevalent amongst all car drivers

I wish they'd just send out a valuer to actually look at the car rather than rely on pictures, but that would, of course be way too expensive, apart from the fact that the actual valuer that looked at my Mk1 Rocco when it got rear-ended by some stupid Nissan driver coming back from Utterly Veedubberly 2 years ago (I'll never forget the scene of damage, and the desire for wanting to inflict serious damage to the Nissan driver) was acomplete w**nker claiming the repair of a highly customised Rieger rear bumper was similar to that of a Ford Focus

Goes to show that even the so-called specialist insurers are only after our money using nice marketing tools and empty promises half the time, but when it comes to paying out, our treasured vehicles are treated like everyone else's cars get treated by all the mainstream insurers, i.e. like sh*t

Is that because in a kit car if you crash your dead?

Having seen his Dax's space frame....I doubt that very much. Easily tougher than a monocoque chassis.

I hope so, cos it's going to be bloody quick and downright scary.

I'm going to do a lot of shopping around at the beginning of May...but I have to wait until then, as I'll get nothing back if I cancel the policy due to having made a total loss claim. I'm going to steer well clear of Highway Robbery, and Jim, I recommmend you change when renewal time is due. I'm going to be reporting them to GISC for deliberately trying to rip me off with a false claim about how the maximum they'd pay out was what I paid for the car.

Cheers,

Tom
