Just failed MOT:( (Now legal again!!)

Recommended Posts

...but on the bright side, only on the exhaust, which I suspected anyway. and they couldn't do emmissions because of exhaust blowing.

Now to buy it an early Xmas pressie, thinking of new stainless system. Considering Magnex, but what do people here recommend?

I prefer look to be similar to standard, and want a quiet system. I'll be having a chat with Dubsport in the morning to arrange something.

Then why not buy a standard exhaust then? Yours for only £225 + VAT cat-back.

I will never understand the obsession with stainless exhausts, sorry...

Because they look better, sound nicer, and last longer?

To be on topic, I am happy with the Magnex exhaust on mine though I hear they are sometimes troublesome with lowered cars, and can knock on the rear axle. Obviously Milltek is a popular choice as well :)

Agreed :D

After replacein the original exhaust on 116somethin thousand miles, was bit relectant for another stainless steel exhaust after the scorpion on my previous car which knocked about and was not a great fit. But the magnex vr system is great and quiet too.

I'm getting a custom built exhaust before I put it back on the road in the spring.. 8)

It's gonna sound like a Harley when I've finished..

Whaddya mean "back on topic"? They guy asked what exhaust he should get, and I answered! ;)

As for looks better, sound nicer - that's all personal taste (as you well know!! :-P ), and the last longer is debatable. How many 12 year old Stainless Exhausts are on cars at the moment? There's plenty of 12 year old VW exhausts out there. Sure it comes with a lifetime warranty, which is cool, but hey, swings and roundabouts. At least the OE pipe fits properly, every time!

Ask kev why he went back to standard! :)

Anyway, I'll shut up now I've said my peace.. :)

Yeah I admit its a personal taste thing. I love how refined and quiet the VR6 sounds with standard everything, but sometimes you just want a little extra noise when you are having some fun in the car and I guess the right exhaust system can be the best of both worlds if you buy right.

LOL... I was waiting for that!

I'm not going into my experiences as I don't want to cloud people's judgement

I was impressed with the Magnex on CrazyMarcel's VR though.

I would only consider a SuperSprint in future but there's no rush as my new VAG system has at least another 10 years left in it :D

Hmmm,

You've given me something to think about there...

I hadn't considered original as I assumed it would be stupidly expensive, I'll call stealer later for some prices, another concern with original is condensation in the system. As I only do a small mileage in the year, the exhaust may not always dryout fully, I was worried that this condensation could rot the system from the inside out (which wouldn't happen with stainless).

I'd recommend Supersprint, I've got one on my VR and i'm very happy with it, the fit is as good as standard and the tailpipe sits totally flush with the rear bumper, can hardly hear it when idling and gives a nice low rumble once you creep over 4000rpm. Bit pricey though, but worth spending the extra imo.

Ah - don't call the stealer. GSF do the genuine rear-and-centre section for around half the dealer price. The small front section is only about £70 from the dealers, so you might be able to get that from them.

Well, the VW exhaust isn't just mild steel, it's a hybrid alloy, apparently. This is not yer £100 from kwik-fit build quality (rot in 2 years). The original one lasted this long, didn't it?

Was considering original ex very seriously, but I think it came down to the labour issue of having to drop the rear axle. I went for the easier route in the end and got a magnex. Very happy with it, seems to fit like a glove, looks really good (like its made for the car) and is nice and quite - esp when compared to the powerflow I had on there! Good god that was really loud  and def. not to my taste... or the neighbours! It aslo had 4 1/2 " round pipe at the back which just dominated the rear of the car.

Original ex would have been first choice, supersprint just a little too expensive to justify, magnex second, followed by millitek... Magnex was around £300 from Scarborough racing about the cheapest I could find. It also only cost about £9 to deliver, which I thought was really cheap.

What's the procedure for fitting a genuine VAG rear- and- centre exhaust? I understand that it comes as one piece, making fitting difficult, not to mention impossible, without removing the rear axle. Is it possible/advisable to cut and rejoin it with a sleeve, and what are the implications for the warranty if this is done?

Best wishes

RB

Yep according to kev dont cut it will void the warranty and not work as well, so not advisable. If going to spend money then do it properly and drop the back axle. If not willing to do this then get a different exhaust... that's what I did in the end.

I would put my 2 cents in. I have Milltek on my and I love it (have a G60 though). I had mine lowered on Konigsports and havent had exhaust bang on anything (even though I live in speed bump world). And in my opnion the exhaust note is great, noticable but not stupid and cant really hear in the cabin with windows up as well so doesnt get annoying on long drives. It also looks lovely.

Had it fitted by JMR and you may notice I am very happy with it :D

Oh well, just bit the bullet and booked it in to Dubsport (VW specialist near Wigan) who I trust to work on the car. It'll cost more than a standard system, but I have no way of raising car to fit exhaust myself and fitting centre and rear section looks to complicated for me, especially at this cold time of year!!

I didn't realise what issues this subject would raise,

cheers for everyone's input. , let's see what I think next Thursday when the job is done!

They are doing a custom one to my requirements, so time will tell...

Probably means they have a deal with a local stainless exhaust manufacturer and are getting more commission, but who cares. Life time guarantee, promise of no bodywork fouling, and what characteristics I want. It'll cost £350 fitted.

I'll let everyone know what I think next week.

Sounds good. Would also be good to inspect it while it is still on ramps so you can check the quality of the welding and fit. When I took the custom powerflow off, I was shocked at what they got away with. Some poor welding there - it had been blowing ever since fitted because they missed a section of welding. Wonder how it got through it MOTs for the 2 years it was on?

Good luck.

Just out of interest I called the local stealer for a quote, they just got back to me with a price of...

...wait for it...

...now are you sitting down sir...

...ok here gos...

£659 and something pence (fitted)

I told them it was going elsewhere!!!!

Hahaha!

FYI the prices of the bits are about £298 + VAT (rear + centre) and ~£70+VAT (front box) but they'll probably be quoting 2 hours labour, which means another £200 at the dealer..

Got it legal again, new Miltek exhaust fitted for Xmas. My local garage who does the MOT says it is fitted really well, so no complaints. Got it fitted at Dubsport FYI.

I just get a slight knocking over some bumps which appears to be the tailpipe catching the bumper cut-out.
