at least my car looked good on the back of an AA truck!!

Recommended Posts

oh the fun! had a minor problem last nite with the corrado.....

pulled into a garage and the steering went heavy to say the least!! was like turning a barge!!

anyway, investigated and decided that a power steering pipe was leaking near the rack, so couldnt fix it at the side of the road!

called the AA and said i wanted a flat bed truck as i didnt want it towed, so they sent out a ........ van? dumbarse! after debating with the driver he called and got a truck sent out. the guy in the call centre told the driver that my car was 4 wheel drive? i think not!!

anyhow, has anyone got the part numbers for the power steering pipes that go to the steering rack? (stealers part numbers) do GSF sell these? is vw specific power steering fluid needed? ill put it in but just out of interest.

help is much appreciated guys

Rob

Pipes from dealer so you may as well let them look up the part numbers - yes, you must use the VAG PAS fluid, ATF fluid is used in other cars but not compatible with VAG!

would just be easier for the part numbers as my old dear is going to the dealer as i will be at work!

out of interest what is the difference between normal atf compared to the vw fluid?

I'm sure I remeber someone saying that you can't get the pipes by themselves as VW try and force you to buy either the steering rack or the power steering pump (dont remeber which) and just don't list or sell the pipes seperately. Someone on the forum had a bit of a problem just lately and I think he had to have some pipes made up elsewhere because of VW's policy.

Might wanna hit the search and check this out - might save a wasted journey!

IIRC it was the rack pipes (the steel tubing that links one end to the other) that's integral to the rack. The rubber pipes should be available from the dealers.

im after the metal pipes which go into either end of the rack. going on this information they are only available with the complete rack?

to be honest i think its just a case of one of the washers being knackered, but i thought i mite aswell replace the pipes whilest im at it. but if the stealers went to sting me for a rack they can shove it!! or worst case scenario i will get some pipes made up by my man at vw or a hydraulic specialist. thanks for the offer tho

I had this aswell when my bolts sheered on my passenger wheel, said it couldn't be driven and would need flat bed as wasn't able to drive or tow & of how low my car is.

They sent and van, only to be told i can't do oat.

3&Half hours all in.

Pipes on rack are built into, pipes to pump are iirc £128+vat, mine is/was leaking at the pipes on rack. need to get them replaced/sorted aswell

yup, I got told by the AA that my car was 4x4 last time the engine blew up... It seems that they get CORRADO mixed up with COLORADO and think it's some big Mitsubishi 4x4 thing...

Rob_B, My pas fluid pipe went t!ts up recently. (It may be my post entitled "Will I kill it?" JimsG60 recalls)

But he's right in saying the stealers wont let you buy the pipe without trying to sting you for a whole rack!

And if it's correct that main dealers only fit new gear as opposed to fixing the old, I think you're gonna be on the phone to that mate of yours for some bespoke pipes! :?

pipes are ok touch wood. leaking around the banjo which is shagged i think. VW dont keep these or the copper washers.

useless? he didnt even know what was being held out in front of him even tho i explained where the banjo came from. new steering rack is between 500 and 700 english pounds. i think not!

yeah the twats at the AA obviously didnt want to send a spec lift so they sent a flatbed. i told him this when i called but he was obviously too clever for me and knew what he was talking about when he sent a van. there is a word for people like that but i wont repeat it on here

Ah ha! Wondered why the RAC man was looking underneath the back axle when my VR6 belt tensioner bearing gave up on the M57 in Feb. "Just checking it's not 4x4" he said... didn't think much of it at the time!

i wouldnt want the swear filter to have to be used on my posts :D

im a polite young lad!!!!

anyone know which cars have the same pipes as the corrado ones by any chance?

in relation to the AA guy he would have said it was a 4x4 to help you. if your car isnt standard and to low to be towed then the AA can charge you for specialised towing. remember it is cheaper and more cost effective to use a patrol to tow then send out a lorry.

As for asking for a truck without being seen it rarely will happen. There has been many a time when i have turned up and the customer says that it is not repairable and 1/2 hr later is driving off. Too many people think they know and dont that a general policy is put into place that effects all, and rac do this as well.

next time if you are 100% sure it cant be fixed then say you work at VW so you know what you are on about.

And dont accuse all AA or RAC men as usless, some of us are knowelagble on corrado's as well.

i wasnt trying to be offensive to the patrol men, sorry if i have caused this. i was really referring to the guy in the office on the phone. i understand that only trucks can carry 4 wheel drive motors. i think the guy driving the truck was more annoyed than i was!!!!

i was pretty sure it couldnt be fixed on the wside of the road!! if the guy had a spare pipe on his truck i would have gladly taken him down the pub 4 a drink!! would have saved me a lot of trouble!! LOL!

and before i cause offense to any people who work in the office, im sure it was only this 1 particular plank!! although the patrol man assured me otherwise!!

as i said, dont take it to heart mate

I would check somewhere like hydrosun

as they do a lot of pipework on our tankers

They tend to make them up on site and fit as well if required,I'm talking about Hydraulic hoses...

sure P.A.S pipes would be the same, hope this helps

as it would sure be cheaper than a rack.

managed to get a pipe off a scraped car in the end. the guy who was making the pipe up didnt really do a very good job but to be fair he doesn't have anything to do with cars and this was more of a favour. i think the copper pipes are harder to make up than hydraulic hoses as you have to braize or weld the ends on (if this can be done with copper). the shape of the pipe he made wasnt quite the same as the original so hi didnt fit 2 well and coupled with fact there was a small hole in the weld it didnt go down well!! at this point i was quite frustrated to say the least!! anyway all fixed now!

exturbo2003- i can quite believe there are a few cowboys doing recoveries, but then there are everywhere! they are the ones giving you decent guys the bad name! i should know, im an electrician and ive seen plenty of crappy and dangerous work from cowboys!!
