door membrane?

Recommended Posts

Don't need a membrane if you're dynamatting mate. You basically need to cover all the open areas with mat but leave the speaker area open with a "Rain stop" pad mastic'd over the hole.

That's what I've done (except the rainstop) and no water gets in.

To check if its going to leak whilst the door card is off, poor water over the outside of the window along its complete length, it will then go past the seal into the door. You can watch the path the water takes. If you've done it right it only comes out of the drain holes on the underside of the door.

Hope this helps mate

I'm confused on this one. How does the dynamat prevent water entering the car? I had the door cards off on teh weekend and taped up the membrane all around the edges, togehter with teh slots for the speaker and door lock rod. The membrane will still get wet on teh inside from water coming off the glass if it enters via the window wiper strip (which it will). So I guess you still need something on the INSIDE part of the door relative to the window. Some diags would hep re the Dynamatting. And Biggrim, are these dynamt codes?

Thanks all.

H

Gixxer, Yeah I took a 2 litre pop bottle, cut a section out of it and then formed a port which protuded into the door to keep the water out...but a RainStop pad is easier!

Yeah sorry for the confusion - you need dynamat over the exposed areas on the INTERIOR skin of the door. This not only braces the interior panel but it also stops sound from the rear of the speaker escaping through the open areas in the door (if you block them off with DM).

By all means use the VW foam if you'd prefer but as my door was in bits and I had a heat gun and some dynamat to hand, I considered rude to put the naff membrane back on again :D

You only need the foam membrane. Save some money and use gaffer tape or double sided stuff from B&Q - does the same job.

You could do actually. Never thought of that Kev.  Ah well, save your pennies and just get the foamy bit.

Hi mate, I don't know to be honest as I don't know how much he sent you. You can't get an awful lot of it onto the outer skin as it's very tight in there but you can get enough on to do the job. What ever is left over can be used on the interior door panel and perhaps some of the VW foam aswell if there's not quite enough.
