NickVR6 0 Posted May 17, 2005 Just chucked my car in for a free vag com as its recently been pulsing ever so slightly at constant throttle opennings. Also a bit lumpy at low revs around the 1500-2k it bogs down, esp when cold. Everything checked out ok, apart from the air temp, i assume this comes from the maf sensor? Anyway, it was reading 237 degree C. What the hey, does this explain my poor running? Could it be to do with my induction kit, think i've read something about oil contamination? Cheers "just one thing after another" Nick
Supercharged 2 Posted May 17, 2005 Could be, ATS is seperate from the MAF...
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted May 17, 2005 Sure that wasn't the EGR temp? VAG-COM always shows that as 237 degrees on UK cars because UK cars don't have EGR valves (Exhaust Gas Recirculation). Or did you mean the Intake Air Temperature sender showed 237 deg? Unlikely as it's range isn't that big! Open induction kits do you no favours, bin it and use a stock air box, or treat yourself to a rather nice BMC CDA. So if it's running badly and everything is OK, it can only be the MAF sensor. Bosch M2.9 motronic doesn't report on MAF outputs....it just checks for a physical connection. Plugs and leads OK? Coilpack not leaking? K
dinkus 10 Posted May 17, 2005 You can test to see if the MAF is working by unplugging it while the car's idling (it gets a little tricky at speed! ) If the engine coughs and splutters and/or dies then the MAF is OK. If nothing happens then it's FUBAR.
dr_mat 0 Posted May 17, 2005 ... unless you have a late VR, which barely hiccups when you disconnect the MAF at idle... But you'll notice big style as soon as you try to rev the engine with the MAF disconnected...
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted May 17, 2005 That's because the late MAF is only 4 pin and works slightly differently.... The early MAF is 5 pin, some kind of power supply for the 1000 degree 'burn-off' cycle I think....
NickVR6 0 Posted May 17, 2005 Wuw, lots to think about then! I am saving for a CDA, i know the one i've got is pap. I wrote it down, they said it was the air intake temp and it was 217c not 237, apologies. Make any sense?
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted May 17, 2005 I'd be worried if my IAT was 217 deg C, especially if the check was done when cold or after a short run! Sounds like it's dead, replace it. It screws into the gearbox side of the inlet manifold.
NickVR6 0 Posted May 17, 2005 Cheers Kev, any idea on price/main dealer only etc? Could this have been caused by the induction kit? I assumed it was that little metal reed in the bit the induction kit clamps onto! What does that do? Wish I lived next door to stealth, i could drop it off for a week and work out how to pay for it later! bit of a treck for me, but lots of little specialist things are starting to mount up now im getting used to her, including the camber! No point getting anyone local to look at that, I know it will come back worse, been there before!
dav 0 Posted May 17, 2005 I changed one my VR last week, if I can remember correctly is cost me about £25-ish form VAG.
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted May 17, 2005 The IAT sender is about £20 IIRC, I replaced mine a few months ago as it was stuck on 20 degrees permanently......which is why I'm still not 100% convinced that is your problem. 217 d C is not something many engines would ever see in the inlet, so I wouldn't have thought they'd make the sensor with that big a range... The MAF is what the IK fits too, it measures air volume in grammes per second. It's a way of precisely metering fuel. Fitting an over oiled IK to the MAF can contaminate the delicate wire inside. Yes I wish I lived next door to stealth too mate, but it's only a 2.5 hr journey for me, which isn't too bad. It just means there's 2.5 hrs to enjoy the changes on the way back :D
NickVR6 0 Posted May 17, 2005 Cheers Dav, i thought it was going to show a cam sensor but it didnt. Ill count it as a result as this sounds even cheaper! A very rare thing from the stealers! Must be the only part on the car under £100 from what i've seen so far.
dav 0 Posted May 17, 2005 Tell me about it mate, I have changed so many damn sensors on the VR, any sane person would think that this would endow it with extrasensory powers… I even keep ECU & Fuel pump relays in the glove box just in case. VAG even charged me 80p for the washer.
NickVR6 0 Posted May 17, 2005 mmmmm, thought my car was a good buy and got bored looking so just got it. First thing i thought get it 100% then do a few choice mods to get it exactly how a want it. Getting 100% is a long road though! First thing day one i thought lets pop to vag and get a new heater control panel as it wasnt lighting up and a couple of settings didnt work, the quote i got for that quickly bounced me in to reality. £40 for a rubber hose, and £30 for a plug spanner? The latter being an unbeleivable ripper for a peice of tin with 2 groves in the end! Think i might start making those myself actually. Still I love the car, and i've only just started so much more pain to come im sure...........
Tekara 0 Posted May 17, 2005 Bit off topic, Best place round these parts to sort out your wheel alignment is Martins VW, £90 i believe. Car handled wonderfully after a full 4 wheel alignment there. For some strange reason since it went up on a ramp at my local garage the alignments gone :( offside strut is sitting higher. Where did you go for the VAG diag, could do with checking mine over. NickVR6 0 Posted May 18, 2005 I use M&Ms in Aldebury. I work in Salisbury and its about 2 miles from the centre of the town heading towards southampton. One of my front wheels is definately sticking out from the arch and the other isnt!! I assume it must be the camber. Talking about 1-2 cm and hard to spot with the naked eye but one looks like it has a spacer, but hasnt!! I know there is small adjustment under the front for the track width so it may be just that. or my wings are different for ref points!!
