ashvdub 0 Posted May 21, 2005 hi, forgot what way it works, Which is slightly lower profile, 185/55/15 or 195/55/15. Thanks
gradeAfailure 0 Posted May 21, 2005 185/55 is the lower profile, as the 55 is a percentage of the tread width... Though 195/50 will be the same as 185/55 and cheaper I suspect...
Walesy 0 Posted May 21, 2005 eh?.... 185=width 55=profile? (( percentage of tread?)) 15= rims size? ?
gradeAfailure 0 Posted May 21, 2005 Yup, they tyre's profile is expressed as a percentage of the tread width, so if you have two tyres with a 55-profile, but one is narrower tread width, then the profile will also be smaller... I'm sure I've mentioned this before somewhere...!
Walesy 0 Posted May 21, 2005 i spose...cos its stretched more?.....
gradeAfailure 0 Posted May 21, 2005 Nothing to do with stretch at all! The sidewall profile of a 185/55 tyre will be 55% of 185mm, which equals 101.75mm. The sidewall profile of a 195/55 tyre will be 55% of 195mm, which equals 107.25mm. Therefore, the 185/55 has a lower profile sidewall - simple!

ashvdub 0 Posted May 21, 2005 ta, never realised it was a percentage, just thought they were random numbers  will I be able to stretch 185/55/15's on 7" easy enough? Got some in my shed, so it'll save buying new ones seeing's as i'm searchin for new wheels anyway.
gradeAfailure 0 Posted May 21, 2005 Yup, should be fine no problems!
Rob Heath 0 Posted May 22, 2005 Yeah, they will go on ok, would go for 195/50's myself tho, will give you a bit of extra grip on the road, only 10mm but every bit helps
Guest Posted May 22, 2005 Can I tag another question onto this 'quick .. .. question' thread?? I've always put on 205/50/15 and have never had anyone advise me differently. Could I put on 195/55/15 or 185/55/15 and what difference would they make? And if I can, how come? Don't they have to fit the width of the wheel or is a range of 20 negligible! carpoid 0 Posted May 22, 2005 Butterfly, The over all diameter off your wheels would be different which would mean your speedo would be out, otherwise you can put what you like on - i wouldn't go any bigger though
Supercharged 2 Posted May 22, 2005 Yep, stick to 205's...
