new (owner) VR6 on the forum!

Recommended Posts

Just wanna say thanks to anyone who helped me out answering Q’s regarding buying a VR6  . I’m now the proud owner of a stunning ’96 silver with mint bodywork, Karmann leather and 17” alloys. Watch out for it in the Cambridge area and give me a toot if yer passing. 8)

Have never owned one of these (but enjoying it already) and still need a bit of help. Eg can anyone recommend a good specialist in my area? I’d be prepared to travel slightly further afield to find someone who’s knowledgeable, honest and not too pricey. And I’m not sure yet which oil to go for or which tyres are best (might go for the current P7000s).

Just so you know for future mate, all Corrado's have Karmann interiors.. the Corrado was built by Karmann for VW ;)

Looks very nice though.. silver with black leather is a great combo :D

There seems to be quite a few silver c's appearing recently, maybe not that rare afterall. Most of the ones I've seen have been early K reg's, so its nice to see a late version. Looks like a beaut! What sort of money and what mileage for such a nice example?

Re: oil, stick to VW synta silver (quantum) that was recommended for the VR seems to run much smoother than magnatec etc.

Maybe Dinkus will recommend a good specialist. Does he want a Golf VR6 or a Corrado?

I paid £6.5K but that includes original wheels and a private plate worth £700. It's done 86K which I suppose is average for that age.

i noticed on another post someone laughing about how a G60 was advertised with a Karmann interior - now i understand

I need it to get to work unfortunately, so it'll be out every day, but I want to look after it, so there'll be mercy from my right foot - not gonna thrash it - it's an investment! But I WILL enjoy it

ford - we were saying the same thing at vw festival yesterday, there were 4 silver C's there, 3 VR's and a late valver. 3 of them were K/L reg... not sure what year OSV's is, that was the 4th.

jhanlon, looks like a mint car, paintwork looks sparkly!

Silver is definitely the nicest colour for the C (in my opinion of course) and it is pretty rare to find them.

However, I think because they are so rare, geeks like us that actually go to shows and things go out hunting for them and show them off. Thus you tend to get a disproportionate number of them at shows.

It's almost like Golf Rallyes - if you just went to 'dub shows and never out on the roads you'd think there were loads of them in the country

chrishill, amazing pictures of those silver C's at the festival (already downloaded to PC). I have been really busy at work recently and missed out on the build up to the fest on the forum, would have liked to have made it to add another silver C to the line up and to check out your cars!

Dinkus, unfortunately changing circumstances may mean that I might have to sell my C in the coming months. So if you are after a silver one I could have one for you- depends on the spec you are looking for. Currently weighing up the decision to get a diesel as I am doing lots of miles at the mo and want to reduce my outgoings. It will be a sad day!

jhanlon, you pay for what you get, looks like it was worth paying out the extra money to get a good one. Silver with leather is really rare! Has it got a/c too? Any plans for it or are you going to leave it as is?

no plans to modify it, no. It'll be a steep learning curve for me as I know bugger all about engines (though I did get it checked out) but hopefully this doesn't preclude me from appreciating style and owning a part of motoring history!

First lesson came this morning (5th day)... coolant level has plummeted and warning light is flashing. Didn't have time to look at it as have had to come straight in to work (in a borrowed 1.1!). Will poke around tonight but still need to find a specialist round here... Anyone help?

I'll have a dig around on the 'engine bay' forum.

Dinkus, definately a head gasket and timing chains hey....lol

Jhanlon,

1 - Check your header tank cap for leakage

2 - Check thermostat housing (it below the black plastic coilpack where all the plug leads go

3 - Check the water pipe that goes to the back of the cylinder head, where it meets the head.

You will be very unlucky if its anyworse than these. Mine needed all 3 doing but hasnt used a drop since.

Cheers

Nick
