Corrado Design Flaws

Recommended Posts

No just the part is £35.... it seems the original part that breaks (I haven't seen it yet - some kind of bracket) was made of plastic in the factory but the replacement part is metal....and nope, there was no recall....

Labour will be cheap as MK4 doors are like no other to work on..... you just unbolt one panel and all the gubbins are there and easy to get to.... which is why ICE fans love the MK4....the doors strip down completely..... you can even replace an outer skin without taking the door off!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the problem doesn't show up for me.

Is it a big job to do it Kev? And I know what you mean about the door cards.. i've had my driver side one off and its a doddle.. unclip window controls, remove three big screws, and undo a bunch of torx screws along the bottom of the door - job done.

Jim, it's a cinch.... that load of screws you mention...well, after you've undone them the whole door and it's internals are exposed, unlike the C where you have squeeze the parts through a tiny little gap....

Blimmey just seen how big my thread got, wow! It was only a laugh, we all love corrados. And if nothing went wrong there would be no fun would there.

I will post a mk4 dealer story that will make your hair stand on end in a bit, from my dads 1.8t T plate. Its horrific ! Hi maxis and montegos were 10 times more reliable. And the dealer dealings have been pure scandal!

VAG NIGHTMARE...............As promised............and this is factual !

Dad bought a 300mile T plate 1.8t G4 Gti demo for over £20k (before price drops)

Exhibit A

After 2 yrs and 17k car starts making a grumbling noise, sounds like the clutch thrust release bearing going. Drop it into VAG, no problem sir, there’s nothing wrong with it. Dad explains its worst when cold, so they send the chief engineer out to the house early doors to have a listen. Dad gives him a cup of tea, have a chin wag. Diagnoses, not the trb but either the main bearing in the gearbox or the dual mass flywheel is breaking up!! Try to live with it for now and we will see if there’s a recall, but don’t worry its logged so if it gets bad we will replace it.

21k and coming up to warranty end, noise getting really bad, dad pops down to dealer and speaks to the same guy. Don’t worry sir, warranty irrelevant, its logged as an ongoing fault so no charge when it goes, still waiting for a recall.

3yrs 2 weeks 21.5k, BANG, its dead. Phones up, nothing on the computer. Dad pops down and speaks to the guy who he’s been chatting too. “sorry sir, never seen you before in my life, and there’s nothing logged, that will be £2000 please”. CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Phoned vag uk, who explained it’s a wear and tear item and not a design fault and that 20,000 miles was a reasonable mileage for a £800 DM flywheel. After months of wrangling with VAG he got no where and had a local specialist do it for £1200. (part I’ve heard has now been re-designed) funny that.

Exhibit B

Cars in VAG for service (just to keep up hist!). Phone goes, you need rear disc, fine just do it. Dad gets it back and wants to swap the wheels round next day, can’t undo the bolts. Takes it down and they say, wow you’ve done them way to tight will have to drill them. Explained they did them up the day before, apologies all round and drilled them, and ordered new locking bolts.

Gets car back a week later with new lockers. Goes to swap again, gets backs off but key doesn’t fit the fronts. Where’s the key for the old ones, oops we binned it and left the old lockers on the front.

Oh and obviously the rear BBS’s were nicely scratched.

Exhibit C

To date: its on its 3 rd set of front elec windows which VAG charged him £200 a time for as they were adamant the plastic clips only came as part of the whole mechanism. And it had cracked 3 PLASTIC dump valves!! Was nice to see the old man fitting a bailey dump valve to solve the problem though!!

In summary, my dad is an avid VW nut who drives his car with true mechanical sympathy. He’s a dream customer wondering in every 3-4yrs and paying 20K+ cash for a new car.

He loves the sound of the new 200bhp GTI but will be buying a Lexus IS200 now instead. He will never ever touch another VW again. A false economy for short sited main dealers saving a few pennies, especially when I would think he’s probably told more than 100 people about this by now!

And I think he should have written to one of the mags too, or watchdog.

Now that is the kind of PR that should make it to the local press ...

Make VW UK sit up and take notice...

Mechanical problems with the car, but the real shocker there is the service from VW and one of the reasons why i'd never ever buy a new car from any of them.

They just don't give a crap. Your car means nothing to them. You mean nothing to them. I wouldn't ever waste my money with them.

Though, to be fair, the parts guys at my local Stealers are alright ;)

Funny you should mention the DM flywheel Nick, my mate's MK4 has a very bad clutch judder and it's only on 80k (1.8T model), did your Dad get any clutch juddering when his flywheel went bad?

As for the whole debacle, what a poor show. Unfortunately recitals like that are all too common place where VW are concerned.

I was talking to my local VW parts chap about this 'levy' Corrados seem to suffer with parts, even 10 years on, but I felt better when he said a new rack for his Sierra cosworth cost £1000 + VAT and fitting :D He's currently got 3 bits on back order for me, 2 of which I asked for last year..... VW are utter poop at times.....but we love em.

Blind spot, or rather the lack of coverage of the blind spot by the drivers door mirror.

David.

So true, THE worst feature of the car in my opinion. I have never ever come across car mirrors with such huge Juggernaut Swallowing blindspots. Dangerous me thinks.

Kev, im sorry to say it did actually yes. And I know 2 other people who have had them go, to be honest 80k is a miracle! On the plus side i beleive the new non DM flywheel will fit any age of 18t and is more like £300, much to the old mans disgust! My garage have done 4 now, but only ever on the petrol turbos, not the deisals JIM!

I just cant beleive the guy could look him in the eye and say he had never seen him. He had been in the f...ing house drinking my parents f.....ing tea!!

That makes it "PERSONAL" in my book, and the guy even grinned and dad when he said it!

Whats with plastic dump valves too? I have to say though, going by our co car guys the new Mercs are no better anymore. Nothing like as well made as an old 300TE or something. The way of the world me thinks.

Not sure if this is just on my Rado...but when I have my full beams on the light produced is pritty poor!! ( I know this is common) however...if I pull back the arm as if I was going to turn them off, but not quite, and hold it, the lights suddenly give out more power...hence I can now see where I'm actually going.

Would be interesting to see if this happens to anyone else on here!!

That's because while you hold the arm in place it turns on BOTH the main and dip beams.. Not entirely practical, let alone putting 115 watts through a bulb designed to do 55 or 60 ..

Nothings perfect I know... I love the C, with all its faults. Even without a petrol 'warning light' or 'lights on' warning buzzer.

My VR is due its MOT this month & all I need to do is...

1. Replace a cracked 'Fog light'

2. Replace the rear calipers

3. Fit a new 'ABS Sensor'

I suppose its only a matter of time before I need new door handles 'lol'
