Walesy 0 Posted July 24, 2005 rather like Supercharged's TDI Corrado ahh...so supercharged bought it then?
Supercharged 2 Posted July 24, 2005 Hehe... I would post up about it if I could stop driving it....
Henny 0 Posted July 25, 2005 I rather like Supercharged's TDI Corrado, it'll murder a VR and positively tread all over a G60 up to 3000rpm. Drove it today and was laughing my head off all the while, it's an absolute hoot to drive. Oodles of torque. And this from one of the people saying that I'd be mad to put a TDI into J-DUB... ;)  The only worry I have about doing my TDI conversion is that it's gonna end up being quicker than H-YYU... :| anyway, back on topic... Best engine for a Corrado? One which works... dinkus pretty much summed it up with his post, but there's other things to take into account too... 8V/16V WAY lower running costs for the engine than ANY of the other corrados, spare parts are MUCH cheaper and a spare engine will only cost a couple of hundred quid! G60 and VR6 seem to have similar running costs from the engine point of view, with the G60 needing the charger to be rebuilt at reasonable intervals, but the VR6s are starting to need the timing chains replacing at quite a cost... At the end of the day, it depends what you want the car for, how many miles you're gonna be driving, and what you budget is... If I was buying a Corrado now, I'd be getting a nice straight early 16V and dropping in a TDI or 20VT to be honest... As much as I LOVE my G60, the draw of a 20VT or TDI is too much to resist these days... :|
saysomestuff 0 Posted July 25, 2005 What bhp are the TDI's then?
Blue_Joe 0 Posted July 25, 2005 It's not so much the BHP as per any decent diesel engined car - The Torque it produces is HUGE!!!!! I have a Saab 9-3 1.9TiD 150Bhp but it has the same amount of Torque as my much modified Corrado
Henny 0 Posted July 25, 2005 saysomestuff, as standard, anything between 100 and 180 depending on the base engine, but then you can mess with the chip and get 'em upto around 230bhp with around 450LBFt torque! It's not the BHP that makes the TDI attractive, it's the sheer torque they make and the fact that they can still give you over 40MPG! 8)
biggerbigben 0 Posted July 25, 2005 20vt 4x4... easily the best

Henny 0 Posted July 25, 2005 G60Renshaw, lemme know how you're gonna get 40MPG+ out of that though... biggerbigben, I've already got 4x4 - in a Jeep Cherokee! Why do I want 4x4 on my daily driver 'rado which will do 25K mainly motorway miles a year and only the odd track session especially when I'd be loosing fuel economy with no real advantage to the kind of driving I do... ;) TDI all the way for me from now on... 8)
24V Renshaw 0 Posted July 26, 2005 I got 36MPG on a drive from Bournemouth to Milton Keynes and it didn't sound like a school bus! :) Jay
Jim 2 Posted July 26, 2005 I got 52.2MPG coming back from Fairford last Sunday and that was with the aircon on the entire way too ;)
24V Renshaw 0 Posted July 26, 2005 Nice one Dad! :) tee hee hee Hopefully I will to get down into the mid teens when its being driven properly! Jay
Jim 2 Posted July 26, 2005 Nice one Dad! :) tee hee hee I'd laugh but.. the truth just hurts too much. Only today was I grumbling to myself on the way through traffic this morning that the engine note of a diesel is about as exciting as peeling potato's. 24V Renshaw 0 Posted July 26, 2005 You know the only answer to that Jim. It begins with "G" and ends in "ixty" :) Jay
Chris VR6nos 0 Posted July 26, 2005 I have to say that i had a 1.8valver and loved it, no, it was never going to be as fast as a VR but i loved it non the less and went all over in it for a year then i got the VR and added nitrous to it then a Vortech charger so any Corrado is great and you'll enjoy it but if you want a fast car, then start with a fast car! VR6 every time, and you get extras the others usually don't get Chris
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted July 26, 2005 but then you can mess with the chip and get 'em upto around 230bhp with around 450LBFt torque! Hmmm, I wouldn't go that far mate, 350lb max maybe. 450lb requires a BIG FMIC, bigger and hybrid turbo etc etc and the lag will need to be timed with a sun dial....and that's only if the gearbox can handle it for more than 10 minutes. 350lb is about your lot on the TDI 02J and derivatives. It's not the BHP that makes the TDI attractive, it's the sheer torque they make and the fact that they can still give you over 40MPG! 8) Agreed but the power band is tiny. Steve's TDI Corrado is great for tooling around in and it's a great install, but it's not a compelling choice of engine for me personally. I struggled over taking an Escort in it cause there's just nothing past 4000rpm, which is where the G60 and VR are starting to do their best work. You need to keep it on the boil with the gears otherwise you might aswell walk.
CoxyLaad 0 Posted July 26, 2005 I think 230bhp is a tad optimistic too. max I have ever heard is 190 from the 150 tdi motor.
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted July 26, 2005 Yeah, VW moved on after the 150 as even they admitted the 1.9 had reached the limits of it's internal strength, but people still chip em regardless! The new 2.0 can be had in 170hp flavour and will no doubt go up to about 200 ish in the near future. Audi have just done a 4.2 V8 TDI with about 450ish lb/ft and 379bhp....and about 20mpg, LOL, what's the point? Might aswell stick with the petrol V8! Henny 0 Posted July 26, 2005 guys? I'm on about the 2.0 TDI which I'm planning on fitting into J-DUB... There's some german tuners that have got SERIOUSLY silly power out of 'em already who I intend to make good friends with... ;) 8) I'll be happy with the standard performance out of a GTTDI to be honest as it's only going to be a daily driver car so I can save H-YYU as my weekend/track toy... 8)
TomB 0 Posted July 26, 2005 Henny, sing out if you want an extra pair of hands. My mechanical knowledge isn't up to much but I can follow simple instructions (Hold this, make tea etc.) :-) and I'd love to see a diesel 'rado come together. Cheers, Tom
Henny 0 Posted July 27, 2005 TomB, ta for the offer.... She'll be built over a series of evenings and weekends as and when I get the time/the money/enough bits to build her!
