CorradoVR6-Turbo

CorradoVR6-n.o.s's VR6 Turbo,,now sold :(

Recommended Posts

I can't see your latest pics as work now block some picture repository sites, so I'll have a look from home later, but sounds like it's almost ready to shred some tarmac!

I tried a few times to get the cams right Dave, its either half a tooth forward or backwards? It does make sense that you raise the head by 3mm it will pull the cams back? I will see what happens, its running now sound nice but doesn't like stock injectors at all!

In theory the head lift with that spacer combo should be just over 1mm over a standard VW non-MK4 head gaskets. Compression with the spacer is just under 9:1. Mine lined up too as 1mm lift isn't enough to throw the cam alignment out. The same is true of the MK4 metal gaskets, which are much thinner than the old style HG, and the cams still align.

I got my cams off angle just like that when I took my 268s out and you wouldn't know, except that it felt lethargic from 4000rpm onwards. You prob won't notice it with a turbo and as Dave says, if it runs OK, sod it :-)

Mine was fine with the stock injectors, they should only be a problem on boost, but a good RRFPR will get round that.

If you go standalone, I will email you over some map settings to get you running. I have a good GT35R map, aswell as one for a GT30R and plenty of hints and tips to get it running nicely off boost :-)

What brand and size of injectors are using / going to use?

Would you be interested in some MSD coils? I ran some DTA tests on the VR coilpack and quite frankly, it's quite poor for turboing, especially at the top end where break up can occur. If you can adjust the "coil on time" in the ECU you buy, raise it 3000 micro seconds (2000 usually the default), but no more as the coils will fry! This smooths things out nicely at the top end. Anyway, the MSDs have double the output, they're cheap, individually replacable and we can open up the plug gaps for some serious sparkage :-)

Cheers Jimmi, still got a few things to do but not much more just waiting on parts now.

Had a water leak thats sorted and the downpipe was hitting the bracket that used to hold the old gear rods on the MK2 ect,but all fixed now 8)

I work at chester le street in Birtley thats where the car is,if ya dont mind having a look that will be great ! I will buy ya a pint

Or i can leave it for a few months when the car is back on the road and i can afford to get the paint done

Im loving the chatter from the turbo when you rev it up.......lush

Kev,I don't think I will be able to get the cams right, the head has lifted up enough to affect the cams, the cams lined up before the head came off and it was out when it went on,the pictures exaggerate the movment but its not that bad.

I will do standalone but its costs and im going to see how Daves Squirt does and I might go down that route,as for injectors I don't know of yet but am thinking of 440- 550cc

I need to get the house Buying out of the way before anymore spending on the raddo,so that's why im getting some more 330cc injectors and using the map from the charger to do me for now,it wont be great but it will have to do.

But at least I have potential to add stand alone ,bigger injectors and a few tweaks to hit the big numbers  which the charger could never do.

Lots to do and no money to do it ...

Very nice build-up. I love reading all the little details and obstacles that you wouldn't normally know unless you see it first hand.

Are you planning to upgrade the clutch as well? I don't think I've noticed you mentioning anything about the clutch unless it's already been upgraded before you went SC.

Keep up the good work!

[EDIT] Are there huge savings to be had by doing it yourself as opposed to just buying a complete kit? I'm under the impression that it would be more reliable and work better since it's been tested before hand. Am I completely off?

Thanks cata, :thumb right: ,the clutch hasn't been done yet,was a new one fitted not long ago and it held fine with the superchrger's 305bhp and thats what power i will be running untill i can save a few more pennys for LSD, big brakes and stand-alone then i will up the power and the clutch.

Then its 4wd....

As for cost, you cant buy a decant RHD kit for the VR so most kits are crap, but there are allot of good bolt on kits for LHD in the US but you will need to modify a few parts.

It would work out cheaper to do it yourself but without specialist tools and a good knowledge it wont be any good for you and could cost more.

But its worked out that what ive sold the VF supercharger for ive built the Turbo kit and it was thought you would need upto 5k to do that in the UK.!!!

Should be OK with the S/charger MAP, just keep an eye on the EGT and A/F gauges if you have them. Clutch should hopefully hold out, the stock ones can take a lot, but obviously turbo torque comes in rather abruptly compared with an S/C and that's what kills clutches and strips 3rd gear :-)

Glad you've gone for the TIAL BOV. Looks like it will be loud but is actually very quiet, perfect. I would perhaps investigate the 9psi spring. They come with 11psi springs but with that one I've found I'm getting compressor stall (that "cha cha cha") sound on lift off. The 9psi spring vents off faster and improves respool time.

Nope, no TIAL springs in the UK at all. This country sucks for parts sometimes!!

I bought all the springs TIAL do - 12, 11, 9 & 7psi and experimented. 9 seemed best. It took Bill a few days to get them and they weren't cheap, $20 each! He runs up to 40psi on his cars, so doesn't need softer springs.

They are massive springs! You will need to seperate the two halves in a vice or the top cap will ping off and whack you in the chin......I speak from experience :-)

Yeah the cha cha cha is really, really cool. I thought it was wastegate chatter to begin with, but later found out it's compressor stall and GT turbos don't like that very much from what I've heard!

Thanks Kev,the UK does suck for parts ! Oh well i will add that to the list for later on..

I would have loved to have been there when the top of the BOV punched you in the chin !!

LOL!

OK, scrap the 9psi plan. I spent a while fiddling last night and 9psi is too weak...and 11 it seems is too strong, and guess which Spring TIAL don't do? Yep, 10psi!!

I'm going to have a word with the Schimmel and see what he does.....

The 9psi spring pops open slightly when opening the throttle very slightly, but closes again with hard throttle openings. Seems to drive OK though.

The 11psi doesn't open at all until you're coming off reasonably high boost.

I'd prefer to use the 9, so I'll check with Bill if the "cha cha cha" is potentially harmful to the Turban.
