PhatVR6 0 Posted November 5, 2005 And what do you think of how it goes, handles, copes out there. Also, what sort of machinery are you wasting on these days. I dicked a 968CS at Donnington, which was highly enjoyable. Left a Golf R32 standing too, and a TT engined mk1 golf! great fun. Not ran it on the strip whilst running properly, but it ran the same time as my mk4, which was good enough to pull 5 car lengths on an EVO VI. Interested to hear your track experiences and to see how many corrado's out there are actually being driven properly (and also to find out if all the so called experts on here are brave enough to prove their tuning therories and put them to test!!). dinkus 10 Posted November 5, 2005 I've not done a track day yet, but I've done some airfield hoonery and when I've got enough money to afford a track day, new tyresl, new brake pads and an oil change all at once, a day on a track with the C is definitely on the books :)

I would drive my Golf faster round a track rather than my Corradp, reason? Well it handles better, its lighter and most of all its is a bit of a shed so not to bothered if i break something. Know what you mean though, C's and G's can upset some more expensive kit
PhatVR6 0 Posted November 5, 2005 I'd take on any man around the TT circuit ;) really? (drops hint that I also have a bike and have ragged it around the circuit numerous times). no contest against local experience, I bet you know evey ripple in the road! (lucky b4stard!) rmn 0 Posted November 5, 2005 I have taken my 16v out and to be honest its all about knowing the track. Lots of perople here, in ireland, dont really try too hard, they just nail it on the straight bits. I have had a couple of great dices with things like e30 bmw's and mk2 escorts with nice engines. Has anyone who uses the corrado on track noticed the slave cylinder boiling and making the clutch drag? I presume a higher temp rated fluid would help to combat this, but any other suggestions to try?
PhatVR6 0 Posted November 6, 2005 bigger brakes or better brake cooling.
rmn 0 Posted November 6, 2005 makes sense that would heat the fluid lots  I have nice stickey pads on it and 280's, i was tempted to make up some sort of ducting to cool the brakes as the 16v's dont have the ducts the G60's have
PhatVR6 0 Posted November 6, 2005 ditch the 280's, they're crap. I absolutely cokked the 288's, they're crap too for track use. after 20 mins they were smoking. about 8 laps in and I had to back off as I couldn't brake hard for fear of actually damaging them. fitting some 4 pots brembos now off a boxster
Joe M 0 Posted November 6, 2005 Done 5 trackdays last year but have only managed 3 this year due to being skint. The car goes very well, Knockhill is very hard on the 288's as its a short track with 2 heavy braking areas and the oil temp gets up a bit high too quick (got a mocal under my bed to go on). Other than that it bogs down a bit out of slower corners, im planning on going to a 3.9 fd though and to get a few more engine mods to make it rev higher safely so that should solve that problem. Was very impressed at managing to get under 100 seconds at Kames this year, fastest car there with full interior and no rollcage. What sort of times did you get round there in your golf PhatVR6?
PhatVR6 0 Posted November 6, 2005 can't remember the times, but I came 3rd so it must have beet quick!
Blair 0 Posted November 6, 2005 15-love to the Corrado then ;)
dr_mat 0 Posted November 6, 2005 I did a track day on an airfield strip. Was fun, but it really showed that the C is not a track car. No major brake/engine problems, but it was obviously not in it's element ..
_Monkey 0 Posted November 6, 2005 Been to a few track days, at Castle Coombe, not bad, but if you want a proper track thrill, you'll have to be getting a ferry ticket and piloting your way down to Germany to tackle the Nurbergring! Been a couple of times in my mates car, hope to drive there myself in May!
logicaltuning 0 Posted November 6, 2005 dont use the AA breakedown if yu go they wont cover the ring and i had many problems with them 0 still on-going today! done the ring in a rover estate and merc a class managed to set the mercs brakes on fire, killed the gearbox on the rover, so if you go make sure your cars up for it
_Monkey 0 Posted November 6, 2005 Nice! :) I've got international breakdown with my insurers, they actually cover me for the ring!! :cuckoo: But i'm still gonna take lot's of spare parts, and one of the guys we go with usually brings his mk1 on a trailer. h100vw 0 Posted November 6, 2005 I did a track day on an airfield strip. Was fun, but it really showed that the C is not a track car. No major brake/engine problems, but it was obviously not in it's element .. I think the VR is less suited to the track than the 16V. My first 1800 16V was pretty good compared to my previous 2 litre pack C MK1. Upgraded with 280s, Weitec kit, VSAM and inlet/exhaust cam. I did have green stuff pads which hammered the discs but they never faded on me. The weight of the VR lump is a bit of a handicap IMO. You could see this at Castle Combe, one was coming onto the start finish straight. The driver turned the steering wheel and there was a definate lag in the car responding. It's quite a right hander and you could see it wanted to go straight on. On the other hand JoeMs VR wnet really well when I was a passenger at Oulton Park. A much more modified device though. You'll have a fight with a well driven MK1 in std trim but that doesn't mean you wouldn't have a great day out. Gavin
dr_mat 0 Posted November 6, 2005 Ah the old "VR lump is too heavy" story. It's the suspension being too soft that kills it ..!
h100vw 0 Posted November 6, 2005 May be it was std suspension, either way the fella was fighting hard. Gavin
Rob Heath 0 Posted November 6, 2005 Done a couple of RWYB in my old golf and my corrado Never quite had the bottle to do a track day, yet Might try curborough next year, its not too far for me to limp home if anythin goes wrong
PhatVR6 0 Posted November 7, 2005 don't even contemplate doing a track day unless you have a quaife/peloquin or true LSD. That's what lets the VR down, it has too much power to put down coming out of tight turns without a decent diff. with one....welll.....you really need to experience it to realise just how good it is. rmn 0 Posted November 7, 2005 @PhatVR6 What mounting brackets did you use for the brembo's? The ibiza ones or did you get some made up?
dr_mat 0 Posted November 7, 2005 That's true too, the line tightens nicely, even in 70mph corners, if you lift the throttle a bit and let the tyres concentrate on steering for a while before putting 180lbft back through them...
CoxyLaad 0 Posted November 7, 2005 Phats car is obviously a bit more suited to the track with its modified running gear and engine. PLus what he doesnt tell you is that it run the same time as his mk4 over a quarter mile sprint, but the corrado was throwing a sensor error up at the time, plus the mk4 got the addition of schrick cams too which would lift the power figure again. I am looking forward to seeing what it becomes in the next couple of months
Henny 0 Posted November 7, 2005 I've done Santa Pod a few times and been to Curborough and Bruntingthorpe as well... I was planning on doing a few more track days this year, but with having J-DUB written off this time last year and getting engaged this year, things didn't come together in time to make it happen... I should be taking H-YYU around a couple of tracks next year if I can get the cash together for a decent suspension setup to make her handle a bit better... I dunno how quick the 1940cc engine is on a 1/4 mile as she was a tooth off on the cam when I ran it in J-DUB and had a dead lambda in H-YYU so was running rich as hell... :( Roll on next year when she'll be fettled and treated properly again - thrashed to within an inch of her life regularly!  That's what I built the engine for at the end of the day... 8)
