chrishill 0 Posted November 10, 2005 supercharge it? ;) the only thing I've been told to look for on mk3's is rust hiding under the plastic arch trims, otherwise I'm sure you know what you're looking for in a 2nd hand car!

rmn 0 Posted November 10, 2005 mk's do rust they rust in the tailgate lots! they also rust under the plastic sill trimas and arch trims too doors sag a lot as the pins ware and the sunroof switch breaks too. as for the engine, i think in 1995 it should be obd2, but not 100% on that, didnt kev get some obd2 stuff, he might be the best man to ask
H8RRA 0 Posted November 10, 2005 he obd2'd the 'C' - thats what i need to know really - whether its obd2 as a switch-around could be on the cards if i got it
chrishill 0 Posted November 10, 2005 I've a feeling all the late mk3 vr's are odb2 paul, i'm positive I've heard they changed over at the same time as the corrado vr. I think kev wanted the highline stuff because it'd be 'last off the line' in terms of vr's and odb2.
corradophil 3 Posted November 10, 2005 Later ones are indeed OBD2, vag-com for Mk4 Golfs etc works on a P reg Golf VR6.
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted November 10, 2005 OBD2 came out in 1997, so you're looking for P and R plate Golfs. I think there may even be a few S plate ones around as that's the change over year to the MK4. The Highline was OBD1 and OBD2 because of the 96/97 change over. My stuff came from a 97 Highline if it helps. I'd visit the car to make sure it is OBD2 as some sellers probably won't know the difference! As a run around, you'll get bored sick of it after a week as they are nothing like as good as a Corrado to drive.....but it's good for nicking parts from. VAG-COM is VAG-COM, there is no 'MK4' version. It covers all VAG cars that use the standard VAG protocols, so G60/16V ABS ECU/VR6 onwards basically. H8RRA 0 Posted November 10, 2005 i thought it wouldn't take long for the wire to drop in :) this one's an m plate so i doubt theres much worth knicking - hmm, what winter hack shall i have- tdi golf, audi cab or vr golf

HELP!!!!!! If this is an obd2 i really fancy it for running around and then switching stuff over. whats the best golf forum to get definitive info??? Coilpacks were introduced in early 94 to both the Golf and Corrado, but neither were OBD2 at that point. OBD2 came about because of America's 'clean air' act which stipulated that all cars from 1996 had to have OBD2, so there's no way an M reg Golf will be OBD2....but the easy way to tell is to look for a stepper motor on the throttle and deletion of the idle valve. Some Ns might be OBD2 but defo R and P reg. The run out VRs weren't highlines, so a plain Vanilla VR on an R or S is the last of the last and the best ones as they also got the simplex chains and solid tensioners etc.
dazzyvr6 0 Posted November 10, 2005 mines an early 1993 and has a coilpack
NickRStorm 0 Posted November 11, 2005 Here's a guide from a link on http://www.vr6oc.com http://www.amin.cc/pdf/odb.pdf BTW, I've got a '95 VR6 Golf with a coilpack and it's deffo an OBD1. I also have a VR6 Golf built in late '96 that has OBD2 & they do feel like different cars. OBD2 makes it feel much more responsive.
Supercharged 2 Posted November 11, 2005 Just look for the facelift models (rounded indicators) then you'll be getting sips, better bodywork plus bigger brakes...
