the way the heater box is mounted to the firewall it is not possible to do it in place,if someone has done it in place i cant c the point as it would take longer to work around the dash.

Yeah it's really not that bad a job once you get stuck in.

You don't have to take the right dash out, just pull it forward and rest it on the seats.

It's a good oppurtunity tidy up then wiring behind there too and sort rattles etc etc.

When I did mine I replaced tonnes of missing screws and clips and the dash is rock solid now.

ive done this twice now, the first time it took me about 8 hours to do, but i did have a hangover and it was pissing down, the second time ( on another rado ) it took just over 3 hours. and theres no way i can see you could do it with the dash in place.

Yep, you'd need to be a contortionist with tiny hands in order to get at the bolts that hold the heater box to the bulkhead with the dash in situ.

Being as the matrix is a Valeo job from either VAG or GSF, save yourself some cash and get it from GSF. VAG are also tight bastards and don't include a self adhesive foam strip (stops vibration) around the matrix like the GSF ones come with.

Doing this on my G60 at the moment, not that bad a job once you find where all the bolts are. Carl (Bigpants Baby) was a massive help with this, I'd have been screwed without speaking to him 1st.

Gonna tidy up all wiring of stereo etc while I'm at it & fit my HIDs while I have the car off the road.

Adhesive strips were pretty much useless, clips that hold matrix in managed to rip most of it off as I pushed the matrix in lol

That's because the VW techie gets parts from his Parts Man. Parts Man packs up the kit according to the job card at the dealer. Parts Man packs one matrix and one foam strip 701 819 069. VW Techie works to job card which says put foam tightly round edge of matrix and fit. End of story. Not quite. Joe Public comes in and asks for a heater matrix. Parts Man not having much Mb in top department doesn't tell Joe he needs the foam. Doh!

you dont need the whole dash out, just the lower trim, driver and passenger side and glovebox.

trust me on this as i've done this 4 times in the last 2 months and twice was doing it at 10pm on the drive in the bloody rain with torches.
