Have a budget of 14k, have a shortlist im looking at :- Audi S3 VX220 S2000 Chimaera Car is to be used at weekend mostly covering 5000miles a year. Looked around for something similar to the corrado(V6 coupe). But just doesn't seem to be anything. Lippy 0 Posted January 5, 2006 the chimp is an ideal weekend car IMO, especially doing 5k a year. http://www.pistonheads.com have a great TVR forum with a Chimaera section, take a look. chrishill 0 Posted January 5, 2006 the S3 is the odd-one-out of that line-up, is it just the engine that attracts you? vx220's are lovely if you can debadge them and remove all trace of the vauxhall brand, but go for the turbo if you can get one in budget. s2000 are reportedly superb, solid, reliable and fast chimaera is as above without the reliability, or solidity or build quality and with a bit more water in the footwells ;) Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Jim 1 Posted January 5, 2006 S2000 came TOP in the Top Gear owner satisfaction survey. They are meant to be superb cars both from performance, fun and reliability stakes so i'd say they would not only match / beat the Corrado in performance, but would be the most reliable out of the lot. M.P.H. 0 Posted January 5, 2006 Considered the S3 because it's the only alternative in the VW/Audi group, plus it can be remaped easily. But after viewing one yesterday it's put me off a bit, didn't look anything special. Like the look of the VX220, but agree with chrishill to a degree about vauxhall. Turbo out of my budget im afraid. Think it's going to be between the S2000 or TVR. Head says S2000, Heart says TVR. Honda is the safe bet, like the apperance, engine and build quality. Know the interiors are bland, but not so bad if you can get red leather. Problem is if i test drive a TVR wont be able to resist, just the noise alone will do it. Interior and body look brilliant, but friend had one when new and had a lot of trouble with it then. Try to get a test drive in both this week, thanks for the advice. designrob 0 Posted January 5, 2006 My sis has an S2000! Ive driven it and have to say that I would take my Corrado anytime! The Honda is a great car, super quick, and with rear wheel drive it can be very hairy at times!! But everything seems very harsh, and not very smooth! The Cerbera and Chimera were two of my favourite TVR shapes, but the Tuscan eclipses them now imo, espeically in black......from a distance.....cause close up the quality is not great at all! The Cerbera was a mentalist TVR, how much do they come in at these days? Anyone ever see it whoop EVERYTHING on a Clarkson supercar line up a few years ago? A 911 (993) twin turbo lead the pack and looked like it was going to win and then the Cerbera just came from nowhere and annihilated it :-) TVR defo the petro head's choice..... just depends how deep your wallet is. I'm not going to pretent I know a lot about them but they have a reputation for a reason! I think the Chimera/Griffith platform had really bad earthing issues which caused a lot of wiring gremlins but the forums can tell you more.... Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Lippy 0 Posted January 5, 2006 forums are dangerous, more scaremoring with people not 100% clued up (inc me) I lurk on pistonheads, so know there are elements which can be frustrating. At the end of the day a good relationship with a mechanic/dealer seems to be enough unless the engine pops. Hopefully when I can afford one they will be more bulletproof. Cerbs can be had from around 15k upwards. Don't know if you remeber in evo Kev there was a 20k car test which the Cerb came second to an M5! worth a read as they knocked back an NSX, Escort Cossie etc etc in the end. i stood next to TVRs at the motorshows and the quality seemed good, how they stand up to daily driving I suppose is the key. Kevin Bacon 5 Posted January 5, 2006 I'd use one daily too :-) Yeah I vaguely remember that Cerb v M5 write up....although didn't Evo find that the example they had wasn't very good? Which they then went on to explain is a common thing with TVRs, you just don't know what you'll get and they never pull the quoted top speeds either. That's what I meant about the quality.....the ones I've seen close up, admittedley older ones and a Tuscan, had irregular panel gaps and just looked a little unfinished in places.....but that's hand crafting for you.....just like the C :-) Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
