ardandy 0 Posted January 16, 2006 Going to replace the exhaust soon with a stainless and a few people have said that I should decat it as the VR6 was designed for a car without one. What sort of legal problems could appear (other than MOT), ie, if stopped by police or anything. Anything I should be aware of or get done when buying a new one? Jim 2 Posted January 16, 2006 What year is your VR? Any later than J/1992 and you can't do it.. and with the new, harder standard of MOT that has just been introduced, you're going to struggle to get around it. I don't even think its possible for 'friendly' MOT testers now because of the new system they're running?
ardandy 0 Posted January 16, 2006 Is there any power benefit. Mines a March 93 K.
Trig 0 Posted January 16, 2006 You wont get away with it unless you re-cat it just for the test, not worth it IMO.
GIXXERUK 0 Posted January 16, 2006 it definitely improves lower end torque and throttle response, supersprint seems to be the weapon of choice , costs about £80 for the decat , i know awesome gti sell them it will cost about £15 to get it changed over at any tyre/exhaust place mot ? well my bro had his escort cossie done last week withthe decat on no problem, at the worst you could just swop it back it does sound a little more throaty /deeper with a decat - nothing chavvy tho ps. yes i have a supersprint
was8v 0 Posted January 16, 2006 I heard (prob on here) that a healthy VR will pass the emissions test without a CAT. Surely thats all the computerised MOT link up needs to see to allow the car to pass? So long as you have a relatively friendly tester who will ignore the physical absence of a CAT. ardandy 0 Posted January 16, 2006 Hmm? As I'll be needing a new exhaust soon anyway it was one thing I was thinking of. I was told the VR engine was designed without a cat in mind?
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted January 16, 2006 Nope, the VR was destined to have a Cat from the start. K reg VRs (the earliest of the early) and on all have them.
Madjackal 0 Posted January 16, 2006 you could get a high flow cat. I couldn't personally advise on performance gains but the local chav clinic seem to think they are the nuts.
double-6s 0 Posted January 16, 2006 i say de-cat for 364.9 days a year mate! its only gonna cost you a few quid to swap over once a year. and the benefits will definately be noticeable. kats definately sap power, and the huge standard vw especially so. as usual, just my opinion though :)
TREVR6 0 Posted January 16, 2006 kats definately sap power, and the huge standard vw especially so. as usual, just my opinion though Agreed! Also I get on average 1mpg more without the cat on! Not a lot but it all adds up! Mines a 93 so it's to swap for the mot but worth it IMO for the power gains alone, the added mpg is a bonus! :D
gradeAfailure 0 Posted January 16, 2006 I spoke to Henny about this at the RR day, and he said that cars registered after August '93 (ie. K-plate or newer) don't have to have a cat for the MOT, as I had thought - they just have to pass the lower emissions levels set for cars with a cat. Kevin Bacon 5 Posted January 16, 2006 Got a sport cat on mine as I can't be fagged with swapping it over every year. Gixxer has my old Supersprint Bypass and that thing was awesome, definite improvements through the range. I'd say the sport cat is only slightly less effective than the SS bypass and certainly a lot better than the standard pussy.....and on the rolling road day, the exhaust pressure still knocked the fume catcher over with the same force it did with the bypass :-)
