high maintenance?

lookin to buy a g60 or vr6 but people on here keep sayin to start savin now to pay for all the repaires ill need to do! are they realy this high maintenance (engine wise) ill buy one with all the relevant service history but are they problamatic cars? getting contrasting veiws on what to buy too as i want it for country lane bashin and the od track day or two, so what are you using them for?

Any Corrado you buy be prepared to spend money on it!! You have to remember that they're not a new car and any car this age will need work sooner or later.

I think with any car... if you look after it , it'l look after you. :-P

 

It's best to try and stay one step ahead when it comes to g60's in my opinion. Not the sort of car to just get in and rag to your hearts content every day. They need to be maintained by regular servicing as far as i'm concerned, more oil changes etc than with most 'average' cars.

what sort of repaires? no1s really sayin anything specific! obviously cars need maintaining within reason, even brand spankers! but what seem to be common probs? which is the more reliable g60 or vr6?

The Servicing Guide will give you an idea as to general maintenance required and what might go wrong.

 

I've had my exhaust blow, leaking shocks & knackered ECU in the last 8 months of ownership. Apart from that its been a joy and I really don't mind spending the money as it feels like i'm restoring it rather than flogging a dead 'orse.

 

C's are fairly high maintainance, they're getting on a bit, but if you look after them they can be un-problematic. :)

I just mean that if you hear a squeak or a knocking..or feel something rubbing ..or smell something funny ..or notice the oil/water temps slightly hotter than normal...or blah blah blah .....you're best off addressing the issue straight away....

 

Where-as with other 'average' cars i'd fix it when it goes wrong..with the g60 i'd try and fix it, before it goes wrong... :wink: ..for example if you wait for your charger to blow before addressing the problem..it could wind up causing alot more hassle than if you prevent it from blowing up in the first place.

 

I've not owned a VR6 so can't really comment.

It seems a silly choice of car if you're worried about maintainence. If you don't want to worry about it then buy a newer car maybe?

My input:

 

A decent car, treated properly can potentially cost you nothing more than petrol, insurance and normal wear and tear items.

 

The Corrado will be the same plus factor in the occasional door handle, sunroof, new set of lupo wipers, headlight loom, headlight switch etc etc etc.

 

Personally, if I hadn't *chosen* to spend so damn much, the car would've been just as cheap as any other car really.

in the first 2 years i had my VR6 i spent hardly any money on it,apart from tyres etc,i then started changing things but it was my choice,im now in the process of fitting a newer engine in it,but the way its going that hasnt cost much to do at all

im a comeptent mechanic, having only owned ford rs's and lookin for something different im testing the water before rushing in. problems like shocks,exhausts blowing trim faults arnt realy what i class as a problem! more like chargers letting go, porus heads,sticky valves,weak gear boxes, crap suspension setups and more serious problems etc. small problems through general use are to be expected on any car, im just seeing if there anywere near as problamatic as other cars of this spec eg rs turbos r5 turbos lancia deltas etc. iv also got a mk1 escort fitted with a vauxhall c20xe so im not scared of a spanner! the golfs have a reputation of being a well built good strong car are these of a simalar build quality?

If you're a competent mechanic and money isn't a *huge* problem then the C is nothing to be worried about.

C's are a good build quality. The probable perceived expense on Corrados relates to new and second values of spares. EG a headlight for a Corrado is going to cost you 100 quid, a golf 20 quid. New body parts are extortionate and due to this the 2nd hand parts go for a bit too. General service parts are not too bad other than for some engine specific bits (G60 plugs cost a tenner each!!).

 

All in all though a well looked after C won't cost the earth as long as it has been maintained throughout its life

to put it in some sort of context, most corrados are over 10 years old and dont seem to suffer the same corrosion problems associated with the likes of ford, vauxhall etc, i have owned xr`s and performance lancia`s, i may be wrong but i`m sure the metal used is thicker ( it definately is made from better materials ), the interiors on these cars also , in general, still in very good order, the doors thud when they shut, rattles are usually due to someone leaving a fixing out when putting things back together - generally speaking, they are are more thoughtout than your average badge engineered souped up family car. i think that if you buy one you will see what all the fuss is about, it`s more about smiles per gallon in a car that isn`t such a common sight on our roads, that said, you got to make sure you buy a decent one in the first place and you sound like the sort of bloke that can pick out a lemon pretty quickly.

Not sure about that, but due to the fact that raddos were put together by hand they have masses of underseal, that's generally the reason for lack of rot.

thats why i said i may be wrong, one thing i have noticed is that fords etc can mysteriously rust in the middle of a panel despite having no damage to the paint, i`d say the materials are better on the vw stuff

I wasn't jumping down your throat, or being sarcastic, I'm genuinely not sure about the quality of metal :) , and i'd deffo agree that VAG parts quality is very high. :D
