Fuel Economy on my VR6

Recommended Posts

Hi after reading the post in commonly asked questions I am now a little concerned about my VR's enourmous fuel consumption. At the moment I am doing well if I get 27mpg on the motorway, 18 - 20mpg round town and 22mpg combined. Whereas other people seem to be getting in to 30's on the motorway, what can be causing the extra consumption and how can I fix it?

How do you drive it, I get about the same as that most of the time but thats with putting the foot down a bit on the motorways. If I take it easy and avoid pressing the pedal hard enough to get the induction roar then I get about 32mpg (motorways).

BarneyVR6, I really wouldn't worry about it. If it wasn't running right, or the emissions were a bit high at the MOT, then I might be concerned, but my VR6 only does an average of 22-24 mpg on my daily commute too. The highest I've seen on a significant run is 31-32, but if you cruise at anything above 80mph that will drop to below 30 before too long.. :(

The weather effects it a LOT too - I get the impression these things drink fuel while they're on their cold-start routine. Short journeys makes a lot more difference to MPG than most of the other factors (assuming you're not over 4k rpm permanently that is...).

So if I were you, I'd chill out and ignore it. Get on with driving it, and just grin and bear the pain at the petrol pumps!!

BTW - slam some optimax in and see if that helps too though. I've found mine runs better on it, and use it all the time now if I can.

The VR is actually not bad on fuel. Don't forget it is not far off 3 litres so you're never going to get amazing economy. I'll tell you this though, my VR uses significantly less fuel than my old E30 BMW 325i.

I knew from the start it wouldn't be brilliant and I don't really mind it now its just if it is using more petrol than it should it means that there is something wrong usually and I don't like having things wrong with my car.

I got about 22 mpg when my lambda sensor went. Might be worth changing it. I get over 22 combined (according to the mfa) with my supercharged vr6. Cruising on the motorway at 80-90 I was getting 28-9.

I got 29.1 the other day on the motorway (1.5hrs driving) without too much heavy booting it in my 93 VR6. Havent seen 30mpg+ since the 17s went on. I *think* bigger wheels affect fuel consumption a bit (cue 10 replies saying I'm totally wrong :)

Daily commute (35-40mins each way) is 16-20mpg depending on how silly I am when the oil warms up.

My immediate observations this weekend: Saturday afternoon, drove from Reading to Birmingham (with, I *think* a slightly sticky rear caliper) and at 85-90 all the way I couldn't see more than 27.9 mpg. If I dropped the speed to 80 I might see 28 or 28.1.

Sunday afternoon, however, the reverse journey (that sticky caliper wasn't sticky this time) - 85-90mph and 33.5 mpg!!

I agree - the VR6 is really not that bad, considering the size of the engine. A mate has the "grand cruiser" V6 Hyundai Coupe (not really tuned to be a performance engine), and although it's barely run in yet, he's only getting 25mpg, even on a long gentle cruise...

iv got a g60

it does 21-26 mpg in town and can manage 27-31 mpg on motorways

as long as you dont have a heavy foot on the ol' gas you'll be ok.

it really depends how you drive it

I suppose other factors obviously come into account but that is just my experience

regards

DM
