what made you want one?

Recommended Posts

i had a mk4 metallic green 1.9tdi to start drove that 9months of low cost motoring

then the parents sold it and I had to go out on my own!

I brought a c-reg polo 1.3 gee that thing was quick kept up with an is200 up to 70mph,

anyway that died head gasket so scrapped it, then with 2 years driving under my belt

I got my mk2 8v gti in artic white loved this car 2 years of very memorable motoring sold it yesterday and this made way for my now artic white g60! which costs more but its the love of the mk2 8v that done it for me (obviously the c is beautiful and the spoiler is the best trick in the book)

Unique looks, understated performance, subtle head-turner. I saw a 2.0 in 97 (never really noticed them before then tbh) in Oxford and decied that this was definitely a car for me. Its not something i will want to get rid of quick, inless I really need some cash. Even tho a lot of newer cars may be faster, handle better and may be more efficient theres something about the rarity of the C i love. Same reason why i like the E31 (8 series beamer).

There have never been many Corrados in this neck of the woods, even in the 90s.I recall seeing a few though, and thinking how different they were, even then.About 4-5 years ago,I was stuck in traffic at nightime and what should be in front but a Mystic Blue Storm. It looked amazing, really sleek and had presence. It was a long wait until I got my Corrado last year, but well worth it.I really can't see me owning any other car.

Mine is a natural progression really.

Aged 16 - MK1 Golf 1.1 (gti/euro look)

Aged 19 - Mag featured MK1 Golf GTI (2001 Written off by Pug 405, but the compensation money paid for.....)

Aged 21 - Corrado G60 (Silver) Written off by post van.

Aged 22 - Corrado G60 replacement that over the last 4 years became my Corrado 24v.

It was just an opportunity for me using the money from the written off MK1 to get a nicer VW, which happened to be the G60 Rado.

Ive been into Vws for quite a while now!

The main reason i want a Rado was all of my mates where getting MK2 Golf Gtis, i wanted to be a bit different and went for a corrado, i didnt really know anything about them untill a few years ago when i came across this site ever since then ive always wanted one.

Previous cars i have also owned:

Age 18 - Vw Golf 1.8GL - Bog standard

I wanted a MK2 golf gti but thought i'd look at a few Corrados while searching. Seen mine advertised with every bit of paperwork from the word go and fsh. Went to have a look and decided as soon as i saw it i would be taking it home, so i did. When people say "like yer car mate" and "you got a good'n there" i'm glad i went for the Corrado.

This really kicked off the obsession with vw's - had her 5 years and never missed a beat! Realised I needed something more powerful when I was struggling against TDIs! The VR6 was the answer!

I dont really know! The first i heard of them was when my Dads GF was looking at buying an end of line VR6. She ran a VW specialist garage with her ex husb before she met my dad, and had owned a very nice MK2 scirocco GTI.

That was a few years before i started driving, and it got lost in the back of my head as a £20k car! A few years later a mate bought a 1.8 16v.. funnily enough, now for sale!: http://www.the-corrado.net/.archive/forum/viewtopic.php?t=38236 ..

and i was shocked at how reasonable insurance was. Being 22 with points, this was a major factor, and i ended up with a 1.8 16v. About 6 months on i sold that and bought a mates G60, which i still have.

I dont really know how i became so obsessed with the Corrado. I think i must have seen one driving around and instantly wanted one.

I can remember not knowing much about them but checking an insurance quote and it was like £4500 so i assumed i wouldn't stand a chance of getting one till i was about 25. After over a year of driving a renault 19 1.9D i just had to get one, so when my parents went on holiday for a week i bought one and left it in a building at work for a week or two before i told my rents :E

When Top Gear first drove the Corrado, ages back, in which Tiff Needell had a pre-production G60 on three wheels through the corners. The way it looked and the whine from the SC, it became the only car for me.

... apart from the 997 GT3 - car porn.

I was working with Paul (formerly VR6Paul of the Forum) and his uncle was going away for the weekend and Paul was house-sitting - he arranged with his uncle that if he was house-sitting he wanted the car for the weekend. Paul's uncle had a great Black M-plate VR - Paul picked me up in it before work and we went a spin - the performance blew me away - I thought it was ballistic and he said "watch out the back when we hit 50 - coz something funky happens" - couldn't believe it when I saw the spoiler! Absolutely loved it - felt so sporty - couldn't believe a VW could be so sexy :norty: A year or two later Paul bought the VR off of his uncle and I got my valver! Loved it but had to graduate to a VR - still think they are gorgeous! Hard pushed to find other cars so appealing that aren't supercars to be honest!

I always wanna have a Corrado around.

first time i sat behind the wheel, and then drove it. The overall drive. (and that funky spoiler had something to do with it. although now you dont even notice it as such!)

The first time I had even heard about them or seen one was in 2000, I seen one go past and thought "Oooohhh bloody hell, what's this then?" and seen the Corrado badge.

As soon as I got home, I started searching on the internet about them and every single review (whether an official review by a magazine or by an owner), said the car was amazing.

I couldnt find a single bad review about them, and then I started researching the different engines that they came in, and came to the conclusion that I must have a VW Corrado VR6, and here I am.

Thank you, whoever you are that drove past me that day in 2000, lol.

And to think of it, I was never even a VW fan....

Similar to you Dr Forinor. Was never a VW fan, but didnt dislike them. Then i met my current girl friend, whos parents and all were mad about VeeDubs. They had being going to shows etc for years. I now enjoy going to the shows, fecking love it, great atmos.

I hadnt really noticed the Corrado that much, i was only 6 when they came out in 1988. But i fell in love with it immediately. I used to have a pug 106, nothing special 1.1 standard and thought ive got to get rid, I WANT A RADO!

Had a look around for one in the Leeds area. Found a cracker of one in MINT condition 2.0 8v.... shame i only had it for 4 month. Now i have my G60 :) and im loving it!

i think its great that people are keeping em alive, having a future classic. AND not seeing many on the road (unlike those darn corsas) :x

Its kewl being part of the forum sociaty everyone having the same passion.

A different route here:

v sensible and cheap student had 4 years in a 950cc Fiesta mk1, upgraded to 1L Fiesta mk1 !! Unbreakable cars - fix everything with a 10mm spanner, a flathead screwdriver and a scrap yard.

Upgrade time:All my mates were driving Pug 205s etc. I wanted something different, sounded good and just as fast - with a bit of luxury thrown in if possible ( a hint of things to come? )

Answer: Alfa Romeo 33 1.7 16v in black with full leather. A brilliant car - flat four engine sounded mental, low slung at front + high waistline ( a definate pattern emerging? ) AND it was as quick as a Pug 206 1.9 gti - with lower ins. Did 40k in it with only major problem being after a garage changed timing belts, but not the ( Italian ! ) plastic tensioner pullies at 60k. They disintegrated and pistons met valves.

Anyway, at 98k i was getting a feeling in my bones that the 33 was going to start costing much money so needed something else. Something exclusive, fast, with a great sounding engine. Didnt know what though. Never thought there would be a VW which would tick these boxes - after all, there are millions of them !

It was a sunny lunchtime in Edinburgh and i was crossing the road in Bruntsfield with my gf. There was this shimering metalic purple Corrado parked on its own infront of us. As we approached it, " Ha, - shall i get one of those?" i said sort of half joking. "What is it?" she said. I told her. "It looks fast as f*ck. Is it really a VW?" was her rather un-ladylike response.

I got home and started doing a bit of research. It slowly dawned on me that this was the car i was looking for. I was 29 and had 10 years no claims now so ins wasnt going to be a problem, so which one to have G60 or VR? I decided on the VR because i wanted torque, a similar engine style to the flat four of the Alfa (ie a non straight sound - if you know what i mean), and the Storm spec.

Took me 6 months of looking to find the right one - in Manchester. It wasnt a Storm, but with black leather - which is all i really wanted. N reg 63k and apart from a new abs valve block last month, she hasnt put a foot wrong in 4 years.

Recently went through my finances and together with a copy of Evo and an online ins quote search site thing, i set about looking for another car which hits the right buttons. Couldnt find one. Closest i came was to a BMW M Coupe but its not really a fair comparison, so i think i'lll stick with the C .

Random note: just after i got the c, i was messing about with my pc and morphed a piccy of the Alfa into the Corrado. They really are similar looking cars. Hardly anything happend ! It just changed colour and rounded it off a bit !

I learned to drive in an '84 Scirroco, my dad of course. I now own the car I learned to drive in, and unfortunatley it is sitting unused for about 3 years now, spare parts for my dads 3 Scirroco's. I grew up to be a auto electronics installer, and I decided when my Pontiac died that I needed something unique to show of my skills with. I thought about my Scirroco sitting at my grandmothers, but it wasnt enough, and it needs more than I can afford. I remebered my dad taking about the Corrado at times when we got into discussion about the S's, so I checked it out. I dont know how easy it is to find one around the rest of the world, but I had never even seen one, except in pictures. So, When one came into the shop one day to have the alarm removed so the owner could sell it for parts...I had to buy it. I got a bonus, I love this car. Ive still only seen one other on the road.

I firstly would like to thank my father for my VW addiction, sadly he passed away xmas 2004.

He owned 13 beetles (one of then i sold him), passat, mk1 golf and porche 911.

My second car was a 73 beetle and fith was a 71 bug then followed numerous company cars and a weekend custom 64 bug, until a year and a half ago when i changed job and had to buy my own.

Bought a 1990 mk2 golf gti in calypso green but longed for a corrado after seeing them at shows, so i sold the golf and bought a cheap 1.8 16v rado to test, loved the looks, spoiler, seating position and handling etc but this car did have a few niggles so decided to sell and find the best i could afford, after studying the history of the rado i decided the G60 was the only way to go for me!

So got a 91 G60 rado now had it nearly a year and love it!

PS thanks to Andy the previous owner for parting with it, dont worry it is in good hands and get serious time and money spent on it.

It started for me when i was in my early teens, my mates older brother had a string of cool vw's. From a beach buggy to a mint mk1 cabrio with deep dish's. Then meeting the rest of his mates with campers and beetles really got my into my aircooled dubs.

Then when I was about 15 he turned up with a mint g60. I had never seen one before and more importantly never heard one before. It was a couple of years old and looked like nothing else on the road, I was hooked. I started dreaming staight away.

When I got to driving age I wanted a vw and nothing else, unfortunately I had to make do with my sisters old escort L. Then a couple of months after my test I saved up enough for an old mk1 golf. It needed a new engine straight away, but after a year with it it looked quite good when i sold it.

Then, for my next car i went slightly off track, I had just started with the air force, getting a decent wage with a guarenteed income so I bought a brand new..... Saxo west coast. I thought it was cool for the first month or so then hated it with a passion. Not the best thing as I was tied in for two years with the contract. They aren't the most well made of cars, but i did get 2 years free insurance which turned to three years no claims when I stayed with them.

This lead on to my next car, and the tender age of 20 i got what I thought was the closest thing to a realistic dream car, my mk 2 GTi. I loved this car and still miss it but it gave me nothing but trouble for 2 years. I had started going to shows again and kept dreaming of a c, a few of my mates now had mk2 GTi's so I wanted to stand out.

Then in Dec 2003 I got back from the Gulf with a bit of money in the bank and a bonus and decided on a vr6. I wanted one there and then, but had to search for 2 months to find the one I wanted. Now I have it and love it and dread the day I will have to sell it, but I cant help thinking I need more power!

coming up for 5 years............longest i've kept a car before was just over 2 years, was kinda offered £6.5k for it.........even with them knowing that its needing the front seats re-trimmed and the passenger door is stuck due to a faulty latch........thought of it but i would miss it if i did sell, even tho its hardly used these days

The older boyfriend of a friend of mine at Sixth Form bought a brand new blue 1.816v. Thought it was really cool at the time.

Then I kinda forgot about them for a few years until my mate bought an Aqua G60, which was brilliant. Then I got my first teaching job and the Deputy Head had a blue valver. He was thinking of selling and we talked about it a few times, then my mate told me he was selling his G60. So I bought it :)

Since then, it's been a bit love/hate. When I've been hit in the pocket badly, I've got fed up and sold them. Tried to go sensible with Jap hot hatches etc, but nothing compares. There's something really special about the C. So, I'll be picking up my new valver on Friday 8) :D Can't wait!!!!
