blue95 0 Posted March 17, 2006 Hello all, I had to change the bonnet on my C, I decided to take the sponge of the old bonnet and reuse it. Sponge came off real easy (and is in very good nick) and the glue on the back of it peeled off real easy as well. Plannnig to stick it to the new bonnet, my question is what gluse should I use? I am planning to use some of that Evo stick imapct adhesive, the solvent free one so it won't melt that sponge! Does anyone have better suggestions???? Thanks?? blue95 0 Posted March 17, 2006 Yep that will be third port of call. Has anyone bought and fitted new ones??? Do they come with the glue allready sprayed on?
ardandy 0 Posted March 17, 2006 Do you need the sponge? How much weight can be saved?
blue95 0 Posted March 17, 2006 I allready have the sponge, will probably save a few hundred gramms!!!
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted March 17, 2006 The foam doesn't weigh anything, not worth removing for that sole reason. I would try some carpet glue. Spray the bonnet side, then the foam side and let them dry for 20 mins. Then mount the foam panels and you'll get instant and very strong adhesion. The foam will absorb the bulk of the heat (it's fire retardant stuff) so won't affect the glue and air flow through the grill cools it down aswell. Give it a whirl....worked for me.... but I later junked it and fitted some Dynamat hoodliner instead.
blue95 0 Posted March 17, 2006 Thanks for that will give it a go, think they key is to use glue that stays flexible. Any reccomendation on brand? Evo-stick drys hard. For ref rung VW, £81.21 for new panels and the guy thinks they are stick and peel jobbie.
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted March 17, 2006 I think the VAG ones do come preglued, the dynamat hoodliner certainly does... As for carpet glue, anything that B&Q sell will suffice!
blue95 0 Posted March 17, 2006 Thanks will give it a go on the old bonnet first just in case! EVO-STIK also do carpet adhesive, will try that as there other stuff is pretty darn good.
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted March 17, 2006 Yeah carpet glue is a softer version of evo-stik type contact adhesive, so never really sets hard. If not you could always nail it to the bonnet :-)
.Rich. 0 Posted March 17, 2006 Where do people get the shiney under bonnet heat resistend stuff from?
g60griff 0 Posted March 17, 2006 i took one foam panel off and can i fooook get the glue off, what have people uaed to remove it?
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted March 17, 2006 Solvent "glue remover".... Evo stik sell it, it's a kind of special solvent and it doesn't harm the paint. It just softens up the glue and wipes off easily. Audioscape also sell it in gallon containers.
crdo16v 0 Posted March 17, 2006 personally I woul'nt bother replacing the foam, some t*at mechanic always manages to rake it with the bonnet stay :D anyway & it then starts looking like the moths have been at it.
