cliveyp 0 Posted September 11, 2003 Am i right in thinking that the VR6 has an expensive service at 60-70k? I've heard about it somewhere, but i don't know anymore. I've found a C VR with 66k on the clock, i don't want to buy it and be faced with a massive bill in 4k's time!! Can't you shed any light on it?? I've found a C VR with 66k on the clock, i don't want to buy it and be faced with a massive bill in 4k's time!! Can't you shed any light on it?? well unless you have documentary proof of the fuel-filter,brake fluid, coolant, serpentine belt, spark plugs etc being changed recently then it can be a fairly big-ish bill u might have to look forward to
cliveyp 0 Posted September 12, 2003 To the tune of?? Just want to know the worse case scenario then i can work my offer around that. 8) Cheers for your help!
pimp 0 Posted September 12, 2003 I'm off to the stealers this afternoon to drop off my car for the annual check up. It's been modded since the last visit so it'll be interesting to see what my mechanic says. Not looking forward to the bill though. Last service was a (normal) service with plugs and cost over £250. Expecting the same again. Mines got 95k on it though.
Valver 0 Posted September 12, 2003 I think it's the timing chain service/replacement (80k-100k)? that is the big bill afaik? Someone on here will know for sure, but I think it's a gearbox out job, so adds to the time/labour...? HTH
dr_mat 0 Posted September 12, 2003 There is no schedule for timing chain replacement. The only people who have it done, do it for their own peace of mind, or because that end of the engine is coming off anyway, so they may as well get those bits replaced at the same time. ClassicStorm 0 Posted September 12, 2003 The expensive service is at 80K,about £200 I think mine was at a Smith Knight Fay Stealership?! Roddy, why change the serpentine belt - I've just done the tensioner on mine so should I have changed the belt at the same time?If so why?Another f*ck up....typically ill-informed! cliveyp 0 Posted September 12, 2003 What exactly do they do for it that makes it expensive then??? Having never owned a car with FSH, is the service book detailed enough to show me what has been/needs to be done each service? :?
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted September 12, 2003 Only change the serpentine belt if it's knackered. They cost £28+VAT You can tell when it's on it's way out because the flat side will start cracking and look very shabby. The water pump runs off the flat side, so it's kind of critical to keep an eye on the old serpent! I can't see the point in paying £200 for a dealer service personally. On a car over 10 years old, FSH adds virtually nil to the car's value. Kev
Scott 0 Posted September 12, 2003 Agree with Kev - I do all my own servicing on my VR which means I can spend a bit on service parts and making sure its all up to date and mint - once a year I get a major service done by local VW Specialist just to keep that service history book stamped!!!! Supercharged 2 Posted September 15, 2003 Spark plugs are £20-00 each The G60 ones are only a 10er?? - the VR6 plugs are much less!
vr6storm 0 Posted September 15, 2003 Spark plugs are £20-00 each only if your nieve and stupid!!!!  ........seriously though i paid £5 ea for my NGK's(which are the recommended plug btw)and even then that was me paying over the odds

Cheers John i had mine changed,as after the guts of 60k miles it was beginning to crack ever so slightly and i thought paying the £25 for the belt and about a fiver for a friendly mechanic to fit it,was more convenient than having it snap in the middle of nowhere etc........anyway the VW tech i spoke to reckoned on changing them at 60k+ miles
