pollen filters?

Recommended Posts

after i got the new company caddy van i started getting a really chesty cough which after a couple of weeks had really started to get on my nerves, so i went to the gp who asked me if the office i worked in was air condititoned, as it could have been a fungal chest infection from a dirty filtration system :o but when i said the office wasnt air conditioned he asked if the pollen filter in my car had been changed recently so i said no it hasnt got a pollen filter, so he prescribed me some antibiotics and sent me on my way, the antibiotics did the job and my chest felt fine again.

a week or so later i was installing a temporary antenna on the bonnet of the van when i noticed there was actually a pollen filter fitted to it, even though it didnt have air con and it was very dirty, when i actually removed the filter it was full of mould so that must have been the cause of my chest infection.

i will probably be fitting the rest of the air con system in the rado in the next couple of weeks so, as i am not really alergic to anything and i dont suffer with hayfever is there any point fitting a filter?

unless there is a specific reason why cars with aircon need a filter i dont think i will bother fitting one.

I think you need a pollen filter on AC systems to filter out as much crud as you can from the internals of the AC. Otherwise you end up with god-knows what growing and living within the AC system...

yeah thats whats i thought, so have all the rado,s with aircon especially the g60's with dealer fit air con got pollen filters?

i know that your meant to set one of those anti bacterial grenades off in your car once a year with the fans on re-circulate to kill any nasties that might be growing in the system, i just didnt know if the pollen filter was just for pollen and dust or bacteria as well?

halfords now sell them, they only really work if you have a recirculate function though , mine has as the system is out of a more modern SEAT leon.

you can usually tell if it needs doing when there is a kind of musty damp smell in the car, a mate of mine just used one in his passat and the car smells nice and fresh now.

they have a whole new air con section including re-fills to top up the gas and lube in the air con system, however euro car parts may be cheaper for the anti bacterial grenades.

Ive known of other cars with pollen filters, which dont have air con. Surely they would help with normal air coming into the car too, by removing the pollen from the air???

Yes they do, my previous car, a Golf had one and it was very good, kept the inside of the windscreen clean for ages compared with the Corrado.

They do indeed, £12.99. Where does it go though?

Taking a wild guess, id say it fits into the plastic housing for the air feed on the scuttle panel.

i think it replaces the plastic housing with the mesh top under the scuttle cover, all you need to do is slide a couple of clips across and it comes off, the one i got of the leon nearly fits but is a little too tall.
