I did my own loom, the relays are mounted just under the front panel, and never had a problem with them. I used one relay for each side (dipped only) and they've never missed a beat...:?

 

Same here: Relays, fuses and watertight box for fuses from Maplins, thick (and I mean thick) cabling from, erm, my (ex-)employer :lol: as well as crimp terminals.

Not had any problems with heat - they are only the same rating as the original bulbs 55W jobbers. They are however, 15 years on bulb tech as oppossed to the halogen ones I took out.

Heres another one for you:

 

When I have my dipped headlights on, and then switch my front fogs on (I dont drive with them on before you start!!) my headlights switch off and go to sidelights :shock: as soon as I switch the fogs off again, the headlights come back on!!

 

Anyone??

Cant help with design defects, but well worth getting some self amalgamating tape to get things water tight.

Got my loom from E-bay, all waterproof (hmm time will tell) either way making something electrical fully waterproof with the kit supplied with these looms is not really going to happen!! I think we're all expecting a little bit much!

 

The sort of things required are specialist sealed boxes with suitable rubber seals etc.....thought about trying to find something, but settled for the old wrap in heavy plastic and duck tape (is there anything you can't do with that stuff!!!)

 

Either way water will normally find some way in to most things that are in an exposed area, thats why all this sort of kit, relays & fuses, are normally in the passenger compartment under the dash where its warm and dry.

If you want to seal the relays in you need to use silica set, similar to the stuff you put around the edge of the bath/shower.

Stan 24v, are you sure you've connected yours correctly? 'Fogs on' should turn off the main beam not the dipped, unless your loom was just for the main beam? Some of the looms out there don't do both dipped and main.

ok here`s a puzzling problem i got with mine, the uprated loom seems to work ok(which i did myself, only on main beams at the mo) but the problem i`ve just started to have is:- if i go to full beam, the lights come on for about a minute or two then all the lights go out, full and main the side lights stay on but the most worrying thing is the ABS warning light then comes on!

If you try to go back to just main lights, sometimes they come back othertime they don`t for a couple of trys?

If you just drive on mains then the work fine! just when you go to full beam?

anyone had this problem before? Gonna re-do my loom soon but don`t think its that tbh....think maybe dodgy headlight switch?

ive just bought another rado and the lights are really awful, i cant see anything at night on dip, full isnt that bad that tho.

 

Going to have to make myself a new loom but i cant follow the wiki guide, think i might have a bash on the written off rado first and if it works transfer it or build a second one. looks like im going to really have to make it fully waterproof though judging by some of the troubles you lot have had!

Its something i have been thinking about for a while now, there are so many of us doing work to our cars that if we took pictures as we where going along and posted them it would make it so much easier for everyone else.

 

Even though i lack a lot of the knowledge i plan on keeping a photo diary of each job i do. Not only so i can post them but to help me put stuff back together :D

 

Hell, if the forum got enough entries they could copy and sell on a DVD DIY manual to help with funding.

I'm not sure we'd get enough to put on a DVD and/or if people would buy it, but certainly the wiki is intended to be a central repositry to get lots of useful knowledge in one place so plebs like me can work on their own cars without (too much) fear of destroying it :lol:
