I take it the garage has taken the head off to check the rings? What work did they actually say it would need? How do they think the rings got damaged then?

yeah the head is off, i am no mechanic so i was just told that it would cost more to rebuild than replace with a newer lump.

as for the reason, i can only think overheating, my gauges have been all over the place recently so i had it in a vw specialist garage who tested the temps. & apparently everything was perfect just the gauges were off, so i was told it was good to drive & just book it in to an auto electrician to sort out the gremlins, so when all went tits up i could'nt tell for sure what was happening temp. wise

I am suffering as well mate got this quote below.

Thank you for your recent enquiry for an engine for a VW Corrado VR6 2.9 ABV

1995

We can supply a fully remanufactured, service exchange complete tested

engine

for this vehicle at £1395.00 + Vat

The engine is in stock and available for next day delivery. The unit carries

a 12 month / unlimited mileage warranty for both parts & labour. If the unit

had a problem concerning component failure or remanufacturing fault during

the warranty period, then we would repair or replace the engine and pay for

all relevant labour charges at any garage in the UK.

Delivery charge is £50 + Vat. This charge also includes the subsequent

collection of the old unit.

No surcharge is raised at the time of supply. However,if the old unit is not

returned within 28 days or the unit has a holed cylinder block or

incomplete, then a surcharge will be raised.

I hope this quotation is of interest to you and I am looking forward to

hearing from you

Kind regards,

cheers purpley-corrado-dude for the tip off, its all your fault i'm hooked on these beasts anyway

well i've just had an interesting conversation with vee dubs, they have got a 40k engine with the clocks to go with it with history aswell & they want £850 for it & just another £150 to do the engine swap...thats £1000 all in :-P

seems too good to be true, might be an idea to go over & have a proper chat to see if i've got that right!!

be careful... i was down there the other day with my mates... they are doing a seat ibiza VR6 at the mo... they said the lad provided the engine, but his bill was upto £1700 in labour and auxillary parts (and not finished yet!)...

Give Barry Swift a call on: 07944 605055 he is an immense mechanic and v reasonably priced and VAG specialist... mention my name and he will be really helpful guaranteed...

jesus christ, bit of a difference between that & the £150 i was told, mind mine is obviously alot more straight forward i suppose, i think the engine they've got might be a bit of a gem if its a pukka 40k miler.

where is that guy based matt? does he work at a VAG garage?

dont go to VW, my corrado had a brand new engine fitted 41000 miles ago by a dealership in london, i have the bill for £7500  it was done through the insurance due to a YTS lad doing the chains on the original engine.

hope you bought that YTS lad a shandy then

seriously though how the hell can they justify that then, still not that you had to worry about the bill though eh

no he is a mobile mechanic (thats how he keeps his proces down!), but he is setting up a garage in Westerhope... he would probably take your car to his garage at home and do it there,,, it's a proper workshop..

if you do decide yo ring him just mention Matt with the green mk3 GTi.. he'll know who your on about.. he did some work on iit the other week...

could you have a 16v put in , so that you could still use your c, and at the same time give your self some space {spondooly savin time} to track down a vr6 at the right price,

probably false economy i would have thought, would still need an outlay for an engine & fitting costs & then the same again when i got a vr lump, i think i've got 1 or 2 affordable options open to me at the moment anyway, wife might disagree like   (could'nt do without that v6 roar either!!)

out of the £7500 bill there was 26 hours labour at £54.20 per hour, new engine £3800, new plugs/oil/engine mounts/radiator?? the guy had the gearbox done at the same time, on the report it said new engine required due to chains being fitted incorrectly.?? cant tell you what happened as i bought the car from a vw dealer. but it must have been bad for them to put a new engine in, but hey i dont care. :)

Ironically a 16v engine in a VR would probably cost MORE to insure than a VR in a VR, just cos it's a non-original replacement engine...

I would get another openion to see whether the bores are completely knackard, probably are by the sounds of it but worth checking. May be lucky and be able to just change the rings for a shorter term fix if the bores are in spec. Assuming its possible to release the big ends and pull the pistons out the top, that could be done without removing the engine. Then depending on the condition of the head just change the head gasket.

The more you take apart the more will need doing, seriously consider how long you are going to keep the car. Done it, must have stent approx. £4000 rebuilding mine, me and my mates doing most of the work (got the bottom end rebuilt) and still paying off the credit cards. Good cars but the cost can spiral, and finding honest openions of required work can be very difficult in my experience.

i know what you're saying mate, but i know as much about ballroom dancing as i do mechanics (nowt) so i do have to trust the garage to a certain degree but it has come well recommended by mates who have used it as well as a number of good write ups from people on this forum.

i do intend to keep the car anyway so i do want the best job that can be done which in this case is probably finding a low milage vr lump to get fitted plus a new vw clutch to go with it....but saying that i am obviously on a budget!!

A cheaper option (than VW) but which gives you an (almost) good as new unit:

http://www.vege.nl/

They have a UK supplier and will grant you a year's warranty. Of course, you still have to arrange fitting yourself. My C has one of these and it's been trouble free for the last 3 years.

Just for info, I had the same problem as you last year. I went the 24v route, and got the engine, and the conversion (including new clutch, oils etc) for shy of £3k!!

To get a bottom end rebuild youre looking at just over £2k. To do an engine swap you have to source the engine then add the labour, then any ancillaries, and fault diagnosis if its a used engine too.

You could rebore and rebuild yours for around £2k to a 3.0 or 3.1 too. Or you could find a used 2.8 strip it, rebore it to 2.9, use you good pistons, and any that are knackered just replace. Then sell all non used parts to recoupe spme money.

Also, after my conversion I sold the head, throttle body, manifolds, alternator, intake etc. I have left my block, pistons and MAF. I reckon I must have recouped around £500 8)

Thanks for the info boys, but just to update, i have found a good low milage vr engine with history belonging to a forum member who is willing to do a engine swap for my knackered jobbie including fitting it, making sure it is running perfectly all for a fair price.

he wants to take mine & bore it out to 3.0 or 3.1 rather than mutilating a perfectly good engine....good for both of us i think, can't wait to have it up & running again now :-P :-P

Thats great! Sounds perfect, good price, history, fitted and your old one's going to a good home too. Good work :D

Not that it matters to you anymore, but I can second Vege engines, mate of mine got a new one in his camper, and it was absolutely spot on (shame the rest of the van wasn't!). I didn't realise they did other engines, I would've considered that had i known, works out at roughly £1500 for an exchanged recon engine from what i've just read, can't argue with that.
