EXHAUST DILEMA

Recommended Posts

HI

My 94 vr6 is starting to sound very sick due to the exhaust starting to blow at the section between suitcase and back box.

The car is still on its original exhaust which is pretty impressive givien that its 12 years old and has 118k on the clock.

I purchased a used full VW exhaust from manifold to rear off ebay a month or so ago and paid 2 hours labour for it to be fitted yesterday, rear axle dropped etc, only to find that it sounds 100 times worse than the one that was taken off. I have spoken with the seller who has said he will refund me.

I now need to decide whether to spend £450 on a genuine VW one plus fitting etc or get a Miltek or Magnex instead as I understand that they come in sections so the rear axle will not need to be dropped again to fit and cost about £315 delivered.

Can you guys confirm that I am correct with this assumption please re the rear axle?

I have also been advised today by another VW specialist that if I order a replacement genuine exhaust from VW, that this now comes with seperate back box and suitcase?? - Can anyone verify this also please, as my 2 current ones are an all in one for back and suitcase?

Any viewpoints on what my best course of action should be would be greatly appreciated.

For the record I want whichever exhaust that I go for to sound as near to the genuine one as possible, as not into noisy, boomy boxes for one minute.

Your views please.

Thanks

Col

Supersprint. The Magnex is OK (I helped them design it years ago) but I would still have the Supersprint any day.

How much is the supersprint for a new one - any ideas?

Is it all in one for rear bit or seperate?

Thanks

Save up some penny´s mate!

Go for German made one´s on http://www.ebay.de

IMASAF has a very good reputation for stock exhaust systems.

Shipping costs to UK are pretty low.

I´m very pleased with these for their quality, and to save some extra money for other Corrado goods! :)

You don´t need to mess up with the rear axle, the exhaust comes in 2 pieces!

I'll go the other way and say Magnex, had mine fitted for quite a few years now and it's excellent. Subtle too.

That said I had a Supersprint on the valver about ten years ago, no complaints other than the dustbin sticking out from the back bumper, not one bit subtle!

I've got a powerflow 3 box system on mine, been on about 4 months, gotta say the quality of the weliding and construction is spot on, but then it was done at a decent franchise (aylesbury).

Thanks for all the replies guys. Does anyone know though whether the genuine VAG one now comes as back and centre box seperately as someone has mentioned to me?

If this is the case. I will just get a genuine centre piece and get it welded / connected to my old back box which I know is fine, then there will be no need to drop rear axle again. - Sorted!

I have just spoken to a VAG supplier in Milton Keynes. They have confirmed that the VR6 exhaust does not come seperated, only an option for the 16v and g60, typical!

They have quoted £433 inc vat for vr6 unit but this means the rear axle will have to be dropped again!

My gut instinct is to stick with original, but a Magnex for £315 delivered is very tempting.

Thanks again for your suggestions.

I had a full cat back Magnex system fitted on Thursday last week and I am very impressed with the results. A good quality stainless item that according to the fitter went in very easily and sounds amaizing! Not boy racer loud but a subtle yet throaty burble on my VR6. Oval pipe looks good too - Perfect! Cost including fitting and new hangers £340, lifetime warranty - what more can I say? Comes in sections and therefore does not require an axle drop. Gets my vote.

I wish we can get the Magnex here in the states. I love the way their oval tip looks.

I had a Supersprint, the fitment was poor. The exhaust shop had to fabricate new hangars on the rear for the muffler to fit straight.

UPDATE - I have just taken it back to the garage that fitted the exhaust, a vw specialist, and they had not fitted it properly! - Not impressed since I paid for 2 hours labour.

It sounds like it should again now so Im well pleased especially as I dont have to fork out £400 for another one.

I have advised the person I bought it from, that it is actually fine.

Thats a relief!

Ship one over then

Yes my Sprint had the rear hanger welded in the wrong place too, but it was a real simple fix. Yours and mine are the only 2 instances of that I've seen. Rest of the system fits perfect and I've seen umpteen other Super's on Rados that are perfect, so we can't really accuse the systems of being 'poor' across the board.

I will say this though, the Super has the best exhaust tone I've heard on ANY system.

Yeah i can vouch for that, the tone is sweeeet. The garage that fitted my supersprint thought it was gonna be a dog to fit. But when i went to pick it up he said it fitted perfectly and it has to be the only aftermarket exhaust he's never had any problems fitting. :D
