clunking from the rear

Recommended Posts

Very reguarly when breaking at manouvering speeds i get a loud clunk from the n/s rear. Ive had a quick look withe the wheel off and cant see anything wrong with the brakes. Rear bushes are worn and crumbling though, could this cause clunking? Ive got some new ones to go on anyway, its just getting some lucky soul to fit them :)

I think "some very unlucky soul" would be a more accurate description. Rear axle bushes on the Corrado are a complete bas****d to fit.

dazzyvr6 & dr_mat are quite right with the exhaust. Check your exhaust mountings.

poly or vag?

VAG!

Yeah they are a git to fit but Stealth have got it down to a fine art. The biggest PIA is the rear brake hoses that connect to the bias valve, they nearly always seize on.

May have to see if Dubsport can do mine - a bit closer than Stealth.

All the "specialists" that I've found, so far, in Leeds appear to be "mentally challenged". I think the only difference between them and a scene from "One flew over the cookoo's nest" is the colour of the overalls...

Come to think of it, there was a small dent on the backbox where it coul be banging. Didn't think it would be this as when it clunks im only going 5 mph or so so didnt think it would be enough force to move it that much.

Anyway, i'll sort the rubbers out and hopefully that will be it. Cheers for help guys :D

Could be totally irrelevant, but...for ages i was driven MAD by a clunking noise from the rear. Couldn't see anything wrong underneath, exhaust/suspension etc etc. Totally emptied boot made no difference. One day noticed rear shock strut had pushed it's way through corroded spring upper mount plate (top of under wheel arch) The noise was the top of the strut, which had chewed it's way through rubber cap in boot, and was now trying to push it's way through rear speaker - hence the clunking! Might be worth a look at/under the rubber cap in the boot, at top of each shock strut. The strut top spring plates corrode very readily...luckily they are only about a tenner each.
