misfire / backfire / loss of power

hello guys

 

having a few problems with my pride and joy... have only had her a couple of months but have had this problem intermittently since the beginning. I will be driving and suddenly it loses all power, it jerks violently, engine splutters and then it backfires V loudly. have changed dizzy cap, rotor arm, points and plugs (but not HT leads yet) it seems to happen when the engine is warm and not as much when cold... Help, don't know enough about the 16v lump and vdub couldn't find fault when they plugged in diagnostics :cry:

Does this happen under load or just when cruising along? If it's happening under load, could be one or more defective HT leads. The current damp weather will augment the problem.

Seems to happen in both situations its that random... last night I drove home from swindon and had no probs on the M4 but once I come off at Reading it all kicked in. If I sat at lights the engine would stall and when re-started misfired and would then clear. When this happens whilst driving the first sign is the tacho needle starts flicking up and down.

Hmm, not really sure then in that case. It's been a number of years since I last had a 16V. Could be an iffy earth point. What I found always helped my valvers was to fit an additional earth strap from the inlet manifold to the battery. Halfords sell chunky battery leads, just stick one from the battery - to the first 13mm manifold nut.

No probs. The reason I mention this is because the the ECU takes an earth from the engine (behind the rocker cover) and if the main earth strap (gearbox to body to battery) has a bad connection, it can cause running problems. Therefore, with an additional earth, electricity being electricity will take the path of least resistance, i.e. the newly installed strap :lol:

 

Now that I have remembered that old trick, I'm gonna do it to my VR too.....for good measure!

 

Let me know if it doesn't help and we'll look at other things to check.

Alright mate, I've got the same prob with my C too. Its all to do with a faulty Hall Sender unit on the Distributor.

 

The hall sender sends signals to the ECU to tell it where the TDC mark is and at hard acceleration it loses this mark and knocks the timing out. When you turn the engine off and then immediately back on again the engine works fine until about 30 seconds later it will go again.

 

The solution until you get the distributor replaced is to accelerate smoothly and not to slam on teh accelerator pedal too hard or it will knock the timing out. I figured this out when I drove it on the motorway. Anyway mate let me know how its going with you, I've still to change my distributor too but have had no time to do so, but will let you know when I get it done. :D

Ahhh... now that’s a thought... Unfortunately my C this morning decided to dump its oil all over the road! think I have about half a litre left in there! It did this last weekend too, I gave it to a garage to sort out as had the same prob the week before and thought it was just a dodgy oil filter so changed that but no use... the garage basically did the same thing and oil stopped leaking for a few days (about 200 miles) It now needs towing back to them and with some luck it might get sorted now. The oil jets out from the top of the filter (V quickly) hence I thought it was the filter, but now it's happened for a third time I've got my doubts... has anyone else suffered this? My Mk1 Golf was always giving me s**t but I honestly thought when I handed over 3K for a '94 C I'd not have constant probs!!! Beginning to lose faith in Vdubs finest...

Putting faith in VW was your first mistake.... If everything in life was as reliable as a VW nothing would ever work... :(

 

Sounds like your oil cooler is gone, or the seals on it's fitting, at least.

Oh hang on, yours is a 2.0 16V? Hmm, dunno if it's got an oil cooler in the same way as the VR..

2 litre, 1.8 all got the same kind of cooler. Could be that when removing the oil filter, it also undid the tube that secures the cooler to the mounting. It has a big(24mm?) nut that holds it on.

 

If not that, then maybe the O ring between the cooler and housing is damaged.

Sounds harsh mate...hope you get it sorted... who do you use in Guildford? Sure I must have seen you around

 

I some times get the 'hesitancy'/slight misfire problem on my VR, maybe I should look at the HT leads etc..

J B motors in Send did the oil filter... they also do all the work to my dad’s cars so have a good contact there... How about you? Keen to find someone that is a dub specialist with out charging the earth! Would recommend Barnett & Small in Farnham, they've always given me good prices (often with discount I think!!) they also had it for a morning to look into the misfire problem OK they didn't find out what was wrong but gave good advice and didn't charge a penny for their time :)

 

HiAs - What colour is your VR? And do you know when the next No Rice meet is?

Next No-Rice is this Wednesday (12th) I think,

 

I've been using MVS in Guildford... mainly for my mk2 GTi really, changed the engine for etc so I've used him a fair bit over the past 3 years. Not the cheapest maybe but trustworthy, and walking distance from home..which is v. useful!

 

Not sure what he's like with Corrado's yet

 

My C is dark metallic red, K reg, and LHD. Don't know how many LHD C's are in the UK but I only know of one other...so if see a dark red one in LHD its probably me!

You're not running polished porsche rims are you? Have seen a very sweet vr in farnham lhd K plate same colour... where are MVS? will give him a bell about problems as could be worth my while... see you wed?

Nope... standard speedlines... though you're the second person to comment on them as if they are different...maybe there's a double somewhere following me about....

 

I bought the car from a place just past Farnham and have been round there a few times so may well have been... no VR6 badges on the car though.

 

Yep hopefully see you Wed... wil be in my mk2 Gti however since I am trying to find a buyer..

Should warn you though, the reason I use him is because I trust his advice, he doesn't try to flog me stuff I don't need, has delivered on his promises and is completely straight with me.

NOT, because there's nowhere cheaper....

 

You mentioned your existing place

Peter's never failed to find the problem on my golf yet... but I don't know whether he would still charge you labour if couldn't find the problem... you'l have to ask him..
