Bad drone/vibration when turning

I'm getting a loud vibration/drone from one of the front wheels when turning right, even a slight turn of the steering wheel to the right brings it on. I can feel its vibration through the passenger side footwell, so i'm pretty sure its the nearside wheel. It has been getting steadily worse over the last few months.

 

Is this most likely a wheel bearing problem, or could it be a CV joint or something else? With the car jacked up, the n/s wheel doesn't quite spin as freely as the o/s, but there's no rumble or play in any direction.

I would go with wheel bearing, dronning is usually a bearing, CV joints tend to knock.

 

If the noise is less when turning left then it is the bearing.

Just a stab in the dark, but I had a vibration in the p/s footwell when turning, only when the heaters were turned on, which was the heater motor (which is behind the p/s lower dash) starting to ware out. I doubt it's the same problem that you've got but worth mentioning.

Cheers, that's good enough for me, not had problems with CV joints before so wasn't sure what kind of noise they would make.

 

 

It quietly drones driving in a straight line, but when turning left it's silent, so like you say it must be the n/s bearing.

 

Has anybody had a front bearing replaced recently, what should I expect to pay at a good non-VW garage or VW specialist?

Get both sides done at the same time.. its really not worth just changing one side.

 

A VW specialist charged me about £300 for the job, using a pair of GSF bearings but i'd strongly advise that the garage you use fits GENUINE VW bearings. My GSF ones are shot and droning again within a year :(

If you have access to another vehicle then you can save some pennies by ordering the bearing kits from GPC and then stripping the hub and hub carrier off the car as this where a lot of the labour occurs.

 

Most garages will press out/in the old/new bearings and then all you have to do is rebuild it and find somewhere to get the alignment set-up done correctly - about £60 for a 4 wheel is a resonable price.

will unbalanced tyres cause a drone too??? i have it coming from the back but the bearings were checked by a mechanic and deemed ok?

Sometimes, with cheap bearings, they will drone but not show any other fault. ie no play or roughness. I had this several times with GSF bearings before I realised they're just junk.

Was that definately front bearings that started droning after a year? Have never heard of that before, apart from rear ones which don't seem to last that long.

 

My local VW specialist quoted me £94 per side (1 hours labour + parts), dare say that will be using GSF bearings though, so may get my own from VW and get them to fit it.

 

Anyone bought bearings from AVS, quality etc??

Had to have front wheel bearing replaced on mine this summer. That cost £37 before VAT and also needed a front drive flange at £55. Got it done at my local garage as part of a service so don't know exactly how much the labour cost but I'd estimate about £50 ? Also don't know if it was an OEM part (invoice says FBK 419).
