Guest Posted July 7, 2008 Coming along nicely Neil, best way to get the door back into shape is going to be by using a dolly and hammer like pre weld shaping etc, doubt it will ever be perfect as it will have stretched the metal already but with a bit of patience and a skim of filler 9or lead if you want it perfect :norty: ) and it should look pretty damn good, I know your quite handy with the paint!! as you must have painted nearly everything on your black one
Riley 0 Posted July 7, 2008 Haha cheers guys :D Aqua, yep..was thinking of holding a block of wood inside the door and keep tapping away with the plastic hammer (nice weighty one). Ive already knocked it back flat quite a way...but a little more would be good. 8) Will clean the bare metal up, flat it off, prime and skim some filler over/prime as you say. Then paint. 8) The handle isn't sticking open anymore either 8) It was catching the door but its spot on now, all wd40'd too. Is it tornado red this one guys? Neil.

Riley 0 Posted July 9, 2008 Started getting into the nooks and crannies... Spoiler is well past being saved so ill probably paint it. Removed it to get in underneath, removed the wiper arm too. Can see the crap and faded paint. Looking a bit better. Here you can see the crap under the lights/faded paint. Removed. Minted. Refitted. Had to break off the number plate as the screws were well rusted. It was at this point i thought, looks alright that...And then had a word with myself. Im going too far with it man... Neil. Riley 0 Posted July 14, 2008 Thanks... Don't suppose anyone has a couple of grill rubbers spare? Misplaced them, had some spares but ive lost them as well. Cleaned the other headlight, and the grill. It looks a lot better than it is in the pics. Need to paint the vw badge black as its crappy peeling silver.

VWRETROMAN 0 Posted July 15, 2008 Really looking nice, shows what can be done with time, money and I imagine bags of patience! What did you clean your lights and grill with?
Riley 0 Posted July 15, 2008 Hi mate, Mer bumper and exterior vinyl cleaner. Ive banged on about the fact that plastics need cleaning before dressing for ages but not many people listen or believe me or sommet, i don't know. But plastic needs cleaning before dressing, not peanut butter which after a few years will see your plastic a nice baked grey. Decided to knock the door in/rough it up so i can skim it over. Bit of primer before i skim it. Plastic primed/painted the grill badge vw black. Rear one was tatty, so i painted a spare.
Riley 0 Posted July 15, 2008 Fitted the front and rear badges. Threw (literally) a skim of filler on the door. Flatted off with rough paper. Bit of primer which i will take off to reveal high/low spots before another skim of filler.
Grey 0 Posted July 16, 2008 Looking good, there. It's shining up like a new cherry! On page 8 when you show taking the lights off to get to the faded paint - could I ask what products are you using to get the paintwork back like that? Cheers
