Timing chains - VAG or Febi

So I'm just going to order up the timing chains for my VR and I'm wondering what people suggest for the chains.

 

Essentially my dilemma is - do I buy Febi chains for £25 the set, or VAG ones for £70 the set (all +VAT).

 

I can't really see how timing chains can be £45 better, but at the same time I don't really want them going snap...

 

Thoughts gentlemen...?

never had any problems with the aparts supplied from http://www.vagparts.com/ and they were a good price, quick UK supply with the mk4 banana and tensioner bolt - highly recommended

The original VW chain parts break up and fall into the sump, so not really a good advert for VAG longevity :D

 

Loads of people use Febi chain parts, including Schimmel and Stealth and I've never heard of a failure. Done 50K on my engines using Febi chain parts with zero issues.

strange you should mention that but i ended up with chain bits in the sump, hence the replacement... had done a few more miles than 50k mind and the bolt that chrisvr6nos dropped down the timing chain cover didn't help either :nono:

Yeah the top pad crumbles up and the long plastic rail that holds the chain up snaps clean down the middle usually......and bits of that end up in the sump too!!

 

The bottom tensioner is the only part that doesn't seem to break!

I've fitted all kinds of makes from original to spurious,all have and are still doing there job,there has to be standards in quality or most companies would go broke,never seen a chain break by itself but more likely due to the top pad running on metal to metal for some time!

 

Some on here just feel safer with OEM brands,fair enough but I know which one would suit my wallet.... :grin:

Thanks guys - sounds like I'll go with the Febi chains. The price difference between TPS for pukka VAG parts and Febi parts for the rest of it is fairly minimal, so I might as well go with VAG.

I bought a complete timing chain kit from Four Seasons Motorsport in the states for £90 delivered. Its all VAG parts too.

Thanks guys - sounds like I'll go with the Febi chains. The price difference between TPS for pukka VAG parts and Febi parts for the rest of it is fairly minimal, so I might as well go with VAG.
