coolant pouring out when engine turned off - please help

I have coolant leaking, well pouring out, but only when i turn my engine off. If the engine is on for a few minutes only a little comes out but if i go for a drive as soon as i turn it off alot of water comes out.

 

I have tryed to see where it is coming from but i cant see. It looks like it is dripping from the n/s of underneath the car inline with the passenger door.

 

The car runs perfectly fine otherwise apart from my heaters have stopped working also. I thought my heater matrix but my footwells are not wet at all and the water only leaks when the car has just been turned off.

 

Has anyone any suggestions? :help:

leak is more pronounced when the engine is cold because heat makes objects expand and the opposite happens when cold.

In terms of finding the leak,its just a case of having a good look.

Sorry not more help.Just concentrate around the areas where water pipes join etc.

doesn't the secondary water pump come on when you switch engine off?

if you look at engine from the bay on a RHD drive car, its on the top left hand corner of the engine, if its a VR that is

It is a 16v. It appears wet around the base of the coolant bottle and below surrounding area but when water is dripping under the car there is no apparent place in the engine bay it is coming from. I had the same thing happen on a VR6 years ago but cant for the life of me remeber what it was in the end!!

Change the expansion tank cap and check the matrix.............nother thread running today with similar issue

I have taken the black plastic cover off the side of the coolant bottle and the coolant is coming out of that overflow/breather hole. So, i have ordered a new cap and hopefully it'll be sorted! Thanks for the advice.

If your heater's not working you've probably got an airlock in the cooling system, or possibly jammed (shut) thermostat meaning the coolant won't flow properly and you'll probably overpressurise the system resulting in coolant escaping from wherever it can.

I have now fixed the heaters! I took the dash apart again and it turns out i hadn't clipped the blue heater wire to the unit, causing the cable to move but not inside the sleeve like it should. :)

 

My new cap arrives toorrow so once that is on i will see if it solves my overflow problem.

Also check the hose on the back of the cylinder head, underneath the HT lead cable tidy.

And if that's gone, check your engine mounts ....

New water cap fitted and no more leaking! Also had full service and compression checks just to make sure and she runs better than ever.
