akacheesy 0 Posted December 10, 2003 So I am still getting wet carpets, can't work out whether or not its the matrix. My steamy windows seem to come and go intermitantly. The water in the passenger side footwells seems to be more than just water, a slight greasy feel. Is there anywhere anyone knows in the Midlands or there abouts I can take it to get a definative answer? Help please!!!
dr_mat 0 Posted December 10, 2003 Definitely sounds like the matrix. greasy water, steamy windows. If the windows steam up when you open the hot air and turn up the blower, particularly if you've been sitting in traffic and the water temp has climbed to 100 degrees+ (i.e. the pressure in the system has increased), then it's most certainly the heater matrix. You can usually smell the coolant too.
akacheesy 0 Posted December 10, 2003 Aye, looks like it! Found a garage in Leics who specialise in VW he's gonna take a look Monday. Looks like I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and get it done £350-£400 Plus the heater controls as mine are FUBAR F##K!!!
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted December 11, 2003 How steamy are the windows? Just a bit in the corners of the windscreen or full blown get your chamois leather out, steamy? You might get a bit of condensation on the corners of the windscreen as the car warms up, due to hot air escaping from the heater ducts (they're far from gas tight) and condensating on the screen. But if the windows steam up completely, then yeah it's the matrix. Just need to know if it's shagging in the car during winter steamy, or just a wee bit of steam. akacheesy 0 Posted December 11, 2003 Hard to say from one day to the next dude, the other night was toture had the blowers on full & had the chamois out but still couldn't keep the windows clear. The passenger side carpets were soaking, although I had put it through the carwash the day before I noticed.
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted December 11, 2003 Hmmm....is your coolant going down quickly then?
akacheesy 0 Posted December 11, 2003 everytime I fill the expansion tank it eventually drains away. May take a day or so sometimes less. I can't figure it out
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted December 11, 2003 Ah, in that case it's defo the matrix....unless it's leaking from the engine somewhere.
akacheesy 0 Posted December 11, 2003 well I suppose its possible but I can't find any signs of leakage from anywhere else in the engine. It is all pointing towards the matrix isn't it? well I suppose its all part of the joy of ownership :D thanks for your help anyhoo dude, I'll post the verdict on Monday after I've had this geezer look at it
akacheesy 0 Posted December 15, 2003 It is the matrix!! I have had it confirmed by my local VW specialist £350 fitted :( Happy Xmas PS Oh, and a wheel bearing has gone
dr_mat 0 Posted December 15, 2003 It's your Corrado's time of the month mate, it'll be one thing after the other... :(
h100vw 0 Posted December 15, 2003 Chris, thats seems like a boat load of money to do the matrix. Has your motor got the valves fitted under the bonnet? If not get yourself over to volkswagen and see if they'll do a freebie. No reason why the shouldn't.. If you have the valves fitted, ask them for a price anyway. In fact a phone call with your reg number and chassis number should get the answer and no need to lift the bonnet. Gavin
akacheesy 0 Posted December 15, 2003 tried that already Gav, they say that my car is not applicable to the recall
Scott 0 Posted December 15, 2003 Do the matrix yourself like me and save 300 notes  8) - You can go and ask VW for a print out of when car was last serviced by them - this will list if the necessary recalls have been done....
akacheesy 0 Posted December 15, 2003 hmm looks like too much of a job for me m8, looks like you've got a nice cosy garage to do stuff like that?? I am not that fortunate, don't fancy doing in in the street :(
dr_mat 0 Posted December 15, 2003 Where are you based, akacheesy? It just says "midlands".
akacheesy 0 Posted December 15, 2003 Loughborough
dr_mat 0 Posted December 15, 2003 Ah, was gonna say, I know a decent little place in Walsall that would be able to beat that price, but it's a bit of a trek!! PM me if you are interested though.
akacheesy 0 Posted December 15, 2003 thanks anyway m8, I appreciate it
dr_mat 0 Posted December 15, 2003 No worries man. Seriously though, for stuff like that I'll be going up there from Reading to get it done. 2 hrs drive each way to pay about £15-20 an hour is well worth it for grunt work like swapping a heater matrix. Lots of labour, lots of fiddly stuff.. You don't need a VW specialist to swap a heater matrix.
Andy T 0 Posted December 15, 2003 It is the matrix!! I have had it confirmed by my local VW specialist £350 fitted :( Happy Xmas PS Oh, and a wheel bearing has gone Wow, I would do it for you for £150! A Fiddly job thats usually best done yourself or with help from a friend, I know a few ppl who have ended up with damaged dashboard parts from a rushed job by VW or A.N.Other garage, be careful. Riki 0 Posted December 15, 2003 Are you not able to claim the matrix under warranty from vw due to the recall campain. It might be worth a call to customer services. I know the dealers have a habit of ripping everyone off so its about time we got something for nothing.I know they were still doing matrixes on golfs, passats and the odd corrado when i worked at a dealers. That was 5 years ago though.
Andy T 0 Posted December 17, 2003 In the past they woule replace the matrix under the recall if it leaked & only if there was evdience it was leaking. I heard that the recall is now closed but they maybe some dealers that will still do it.
