Anyone know how these compare with a VR6?

Recommended Posts

couldnt tell you how it compares but I think they are wicked.....although I would imagine the credit card would take a larger hit than having a rado

I've looked to replace my VR6 with one.

944 S2, essentially a 968 for half the money, a little down on power as it doesn't have the variocam head.

A class above VWs - parts are more expensive and better made. This means they will last longer, but if you buy a worn one then obviously you have to foot the bill.

The advantage of a VR6 is that parts are shared across lots of VWs so are very cheap, and everyone knows how to work on them. A 944 S2 has lots of unique parts and they sold in lower numbers than VWs.

Handle better than a VR, don't feel much different acceleration wise. More of an occasion to drive. "Poor ma's Porsche" image fading now and they are considered more of a classic.

Main unique expensive issues are:

Rusty sills and wing (some are really bad)

Cam chain (between camshafts) needs checking regulary and replacing before the cogs on the camshafts wear

Brake calipers are alloy with steel plates so they corrode and lift causing sticking brakes

Clutch has rubber parts that will be perished by now and cause judder (clutch is harder to change than VW)

Get one thats has allt he above kept on top of and you should avoid the big bills

My mum had a 944S2 Cab that I was insured on at same time I had my VR6.

Awesome car chassis very underwhelmed by the 211bhp. Very good handling but feel like a bigger car to hustle than the C. You cant argue with RWD and sublime weight balance though! Similar performance to the VR but smoother IMO.

If taken to a specialist bills are probably about 15% more than the VR.

As said above by a nice example and you shouldnt go wrong.

Your mum had a 944 cabriolet.....cool mum :salute: !!

Love the blue.

Yep she has had some cool cars. Even owned a brand new Corrado 2.0 16V in white for a day.... LOL That was my first love affair with the Corrado. Whilst she was buying the valver I was sat in a Blue VR6 in the showroom wishing it could be mine! And now it is and for considerably less than £24k (thank goodness)

Cobalt blue is the colour to have on the 944S2, trust me I have been to see every other colour

There was a guy on Edition 38 wanting to swap his 944S2 in blue for a Corrado. Not sure if he still has it?

I've been lucky enough to own all three. I first had a three year old Black 944S2 and loved how smooth the engine was, I then had a Red 944 Turbo and this really was a well sorted car with so much useable power that just kept on pulling and pulling. I loved the way the doors closed with such a reasuring clunk, they felt so heavy but the car drove like it was half its weight. The build quality of these cars is superb but after owning the Turbo for three years while selling VW's as a business I felt a bit of a traitor so I looked around at what else would suit the bill and ended up with a VR6 Corrado. I wasn't expecting it to be as refined but it was close and I was very impressed. I've since owned about ten Corrado's and still have two (a VR6 and a 2ltr GTi Engineering 16v). If I could find another good 944 Turbo in my favorite colour (cobalt blue) then I'd be interested but it would have to be good for me to let go of the VR6. The best way of describing them is that they are like a rear wheel drive version of a Corrado VR6 with a little bit more build quality and bigger bills when they go wrong.
