Just how expensive is this corrado to run???

Having just visited a garage that specialises in corrados and golfs.... I got one hell of a shock.

 

One guy had taken his car there and spent 35k on it over a year. 6 grand on a respray , 6 grand on getting the engine as per original.

 

I was told that the timeing chain should really be changed at 100k mark....i asked how much that costs....and the answer was a grand....

 

my god what have i got myself into.... eeek

the chains cost alot in labour mate, the engine needs to be hoiked out and then worked on and refitted, as for 35k... :shock: wow, that must be a fantastic looking car, you got any pics?

What on earth did he spend the remaining 23k on then?

 

I can believe 6k for a respray if its a glass out, bare metal job

 

I can believe 6k for an engine rebuild if its massively comprehensive with virtually everything replaced

 

I'm struggling to see how anyone can spend 23k on top of that as well

Just becasue someone wanted to spend that sort of money doesn't mean its necessary! The chains is an expensive job and is the 'biggy' as far as VR6's are concerned but dont rush out and have it done just becuause the cars covered 100k! It'd be worth having it done as a precaution sometime - it's also worth baring in mind that the £1000 would probably include a new clutch as most people change the clutch at the same time.

23k on upkeep over ONE year

Yeah ok 35k a bit rich for a year!

 

Gforceuk... is this your car we're discussing? If so the 6k engine re-build should have taken Chains/clutch into account!

 

You diodn't go to TCS did you? :gag:

I would suggest you use another garage..?

 

And chains don't have to be done on 100k.

My old C was on 235k miles when I sold it - still on original chains and no chatter, wear, etc.

Oil was changed and checked regularly, and as far as I could tell, was a well looked after C for all its life.

they are expensive, not 35k expensive, but i've chucked lots more into my car than any other i've had. Over £4k in two years and i hardly done any mods, just lowered it really

Mine had 107k on the clock when i bought it.

 

To date the list of parts replaced on mine through necessity are,

 

suspension struts and springs - swapped for coilovers

top mounts at the same time in above cost

Rear beam bushes £

Front antiroll bar and drop links (did rear as well)

Front and rear discs and pads (upgraded these as well)

New brake lines front to rear as well as braided hoses

Servicing

Side bolster and seat repair

New alarm

 

probably just over £2.5k in 2 years... not bad at all really! - the expensive stuff is what you want to do to make it look nice!

At the end of the day we are talking about a minimum 13 year old sports car...

 

Still powerful being capable of 150mph with superb handling even by today's standards

 

It's not going to be cheap to run but I don't think they are that bad either - fairly economical on fuel and drivetrain parts are cheap because they cross over to a golf...

 

I know C&R had a customer that's spent that sort of cash on one but obviously that is a bit extreme!

I think the OP must have had his leg pulled by the garage. £35k in a single year is scarecely believable, unless it's engine has been blown up 7 times, or had his the bodywork restoration done by Chip Foose.

 

I heard rumours years ago that the 'Burgundy' Mk2 Golf that Steve Denton built & showed at Inters in 2001 had over £40k invested in it, but at least that had gold wheels and engine! If this Corrado really has that kinda spend then it should be really something.

 

But frankly if I had £35k burning a hole in my pocket right now I'd be spending it on something a lot nicer and quicker than an elderly Corrado. That kind of money buys you a good 2007-registered M3 in the current market

that kinda money could get you a 996 gt2 in this current climit!!! I know what i would go for... sorry Corrado :( you lose

Back to the original topic I think as a rule of thumb you should expect average spending on a Corrado to be around the £500-1000. Which when you take into account modern car depreciation aint that bad really!

Did he gold plate the engine block or something? :lol:

 

Personally I would have bought a brand new (not rebuilt) VR6 complete engine from VW for less than than that.
