What would explode and leave oil all under the hood?

Recommended Posts

I was working out my starter issues, drove down the street, and the car died. My battery was low so i had to bring another car and some jumper cables to get going again. I turned the corrado around and drove it back into my garage. I then noticed a trail of oil coming all the way down the street and into my garage. I looked under the car and there was a growing puddle of oil. I popped the hood and there is oil everywhere. It looks like the radiator fan threw it around too. What does it sound like guys? Something in the supercharger explode? I can't even tell where its coming from because its just dripping off of everything. BTW it wasn't loud, I didn't know anything happened untill I got out of the car, but then again I have a bad exhaust leak and the engine is friggin' loud so I can't hear much else.

Crankshaft seal? Oil Gets thrown onto the pulleys.

Or the oil filter sealing ring could have blown?

Heat exhanger?

Oil filler cap?

G Lader oil feed pipe?

Won't be the heat exchanger... That throws the oil into the water and blows the top off the expansion tank if the oil part of it goes... :? Guess who's had one of them go?!?

Sounds to me like it's one of the oil pipes to/from the charger either come loose or broken... it's high pressure and will throw oil in all sorts of directions especially when it hits the fan and pulleys...

If it was still running OK, then I'd hazzard a guess that the charger hasn't gone bang...

Check your oil pressure switch.

That sounds like the voice of experience! :?

I'd never thought about that, but they'd make a hell of a mess if you knocked the top off one with the engine running... :?

Well the car has a million problems and does run like shit, so I can't say the supercharger did or didn't blow. I'm pretty sure it is in need of a rebuild but not completely destroyed. (It blew air, just not as hard as it should have.) This was before the oil thing, i don't know what to think now. It probably was an oil line to the supercharger, the oil seems to be concentrated in that area. I don't know where to start so I'm gonna take the supercharger out now and try to clean up all this oil.

*Update*

I just got done rebuilding the supercharger and doing a few other things, finally got the car back together. The thing's been sitting in my garage for months. I filled all the fluids back up and started her for the first time. Started right up, sounded a little rough for a second then started sounding smoother than it ever has while I've owned it. I pulled a little sensor off the hose going to the throttle body so I could see how the supercharger was blowing. 100% improvement from before, it feelt like a friend's corrado did when he pulled his off and his car runs awesome. So, I feel good about the supercharger now but I moved my foot and it slipped. I look down and there is a huge growing puddle of oil under the car. I quickly turn it off and roll the car back so I can clean it all up.

The oil is coming from near / above the oil filter but I can't quite see where. It wasn't dripping down the oil filter, I know its not the filter itself being loose or punctured or something. I couldn't even see any oil from above so its not that high up in the engine bay. Anyone have any clues as to what it is? It only started pouring out when the engine was running and it leaked out about 2-3 quarts of oil onto the ground.

** I JUST REALISED THATS ABOUT WHERE THE RUBBER OIL LINE GOES FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE SUPERCHARGER TO THE ENGINE BLOCK. (is that the return line or the feed line?) I bet that rubber hose is cracked/broken. I'll go check it out. I assume I can buy a new one at a local VW dealer. **

Mines a braided line, not sure if they all came out the factory like that or not?

My lower line is rubber (connects to the front of the engine block) and the other line is braided (connects to the side of the engien block.

What is that lower line, the feed or return line? How much is the VW dealership gonna rape me for it?

That lower line is the return, maybe it split butit should be too bad from the dealers. Get the 2 copper washers that go either side of the banjo too it can be a PIA to seal otherwise.

Did you renew those washers when you did the charger? That could be why its leaking.

I would estimate less than $50 for that line.

ETKA gives the dimesions of the pipe, 5.5X3X180millimetres, you could make your own for a dollar. Just put new hose clips on.

It wasn't really a leak, you'd start the car and in a few seconds it would empty a few quarts of oil in seconds.

I took the lower line off and cleaned it and I realised that wasn't the problem. I finally found it though.....

My front engine mount wasn't connected to the engine at all. (I really hate the stupid F(*&^&*^ that I bought my car from.) Anyway, with the front mount disconnected the engine must have moved aroudn a little and the edge of the engine mount rubbed against the side of the oil filter and made a dent against the top of that oil filter housing right where the rubber gasket seals. It also put a hole in the side of the oil filter. It took forever to get the radiator fan off so that I could put some new bolts in the engine mount and then another couple hours just to get the friggin oil filter off. Finally got it out and I think I'll be able to fill the dent at the top of that housing with JB weld so that the oil filter will have a flat area to seal against. That way I don't have to get a whole new housing.

The housing is the same as a MKII golf one, so you should be able to get one from a scrap yard well cheap! ;) (just in case you can't be doing with all the JB weld mess! ) 8)

Going back to the original problem, I had that on my Mk1 Golf (same basic engine block with different internals but in this case maybe similar enough).

The oil filter seal let go and sprayed oil everywhere. I replaced the oil filter, same thing happened - the seal just popped out!

Turned out the oil pump had gotten clogged internally, so oil was being pumped only one way - ie. oil pressure was building up. Fortunately the cheapest component (other than the damned oil pump!) went first :)

Might not be that, but it sounds like it...scared the crap out of me at the time, at first I thought the block had let go.

No I can see exactly whats the problem. The surface that the rubber gasket is sealed agains is dented upward. All I have to do is fill it in with JB weld or something. I could get a new housing, I know a guy here with a few Corrados that he parts out so parts aren't a problem. JB weld is just faster/easier than replacing that housing. :)

I had the exact same problem as Blair, with my C and the filter housing looked damaged too... so after having all the oil dumped on me five times, several filters, and oil cooler we eventualy decided to give the pump a go - problem solved but a messy experience...

just thought I'd mention this incase you find that after you do the housing it dumps its oil again

Well my JB weld job didn't work. Its not pouring out like before but its still leaking pretty fast. Looks like I gotta take it all apart again and get a new housing from my corrado parts guy.

Its alive!!! The car is finally running and NOT spewing oil everywhere. 8) I'll post pics tomorrow of that messed up oil filter housing and also what I had to do the get my oil filter off (I screwed it on REALLY tight the last time after I JB welded it trying to keep it from leaking).

Great new Tajman...

Now you know what to do.. take it out for a damn good drive :D

Now, the car runs but it still has problems. It has bad exhaust leaks and is really loud. Also, when you let off the gas to shift there is a big clunk. I think I need to get my motor mount attatched better (I could only get one bolt in, at least it won't hit the filter housing now). I also think the car is way to gutless and underpowered in first and second gear and anything under 3K rpm's. Maybe I just don't know Corrados good enough but I though they were supposed to be faster than this. My 2nd gear syncros are starting to go out too, you have to know how to hit it just right and its really hard to downshift to 2nd. It pulls to the right a little too and tracks to the road way too much but maybe thats just how they are. Also lots of vibration noise when driving at certain rpm's.

edit - My pics aren't working so I took them off.

Gutless under 3k could be the pipe to the ECU being too short. Check and replace it if need be. It needs to be exactly a metre long. There should be quite a bit looped under the cover but that is normal.

What "pipe" is this? Is it a vaccume hose? Hmmmm I don't have anything to measure a metre, how many inches is that?

39 inches to a meter m8

If you look at the ECU (next to wiper linkage on pass side) it's the fairly narrow braided pipe attached to it.
