Quick moonroof question.

Recommended Posts

I've fitted a passat glass sunroof to my car but it sits (about 5mm) proud from the roofline.

I've tried the adjusters but its already as low as it can go.

Can I just put washers between the car roof and the sunroof where it bolts to the car (the front 6 bolts?) To move the whole assembly down?

Thanks.

I would definately not do that mate, you need a half decent seal between the roof and the sunroof mech, you'll get damp and draughts galore with an air gap there. Can't help with your main problem though, I've just removed my moonroof after a couple of years because it never fitted properly!

I have the same problem but at the front it's a couple of mm rather than 5, still enough to cause wind noise. I don't have any adjustment either.

i fitted andys moon roof to mine and its fits perfect !! :D :D

but i think its because i have the roof cassett from a passatt and not using a std corrado one

unless you can fit some kind of rubber seal i would not use the spacers you will get wet !!

Glad to hear it fits good on yours. My problem wasn't the outer panel, more the inner panel collecting water because it had no method of draining water into the drainage channels of the mechanism. I got fed up with cold showers the first time I put the brakes on every day! I've taken some pictures and will be starting a thread on this soon, "things to look out for when selecting a passat moonroof mechaism!" I've seen _Andy_'s set up and its fine, I guess I got a mechanism from the wrong type of Passat.

(this is from my experience and reading on here)

Most impotant:

Is the roof/cassette from a B4 estate? These are the only ones that fit.. .

The Saloon's roof is a different shape and sits proud in the middle (mine's a saloon one and sits up a few mm in the middle-front and fine everywhere else).

Wind Noise from this is only an issue with the blind open and roof shut... and I never run like that.

Other slight issue I have is that I can't run with teh roof all the way back as it squeeks, so has to be closed about 1/2 inch to resolve that.

I bought it from kadvr6 and he said it was from a b3 estate, so should work fine. Might have to go for washers and bathroom sealant! Actually some foam strips glued to the roof might work better. Theres a thread on vortex which suggests people have put washers on the "track screws" which I guess are the ones I'm on about. No reported problems either. Also read that there should be "spacers" fitted as standard on some moonroofs and that they may have fallen off, But this would create a gap leading to wind noise and flooding wouldn't it?

I might take it out and refit it as I must have done something wrong. The seal is almost poking out of the roof!!! :mad2:

not trying to hijack this thread, but while we are discussing sunroofs is it possible to wire a late motor to early wiring? i ask as ive got another moonroof which has had the motor changed, and the wrong screws fitted and from memory after doing it myself, the screws will not come out.

Don't do the washers and sealant thing! That really is an awful solution, I feel your pain though, I have changed 8 or 9 now over several VWs, its not easy and you never quite know what you're fitting tilll you've bought it and fitted it by which time it needs to work!

my two penneth

HA HA HA HA HA too late now! But yeah I must agree it might be a bodge too far! Theres a lot of sealant up there now. Got my girlfriend to pour a couple of bucketfulls of water on the sunroof and didnt get a single drip. I havent driven it anywhere yet though so theres still time for a waterfall. Can you give me any reason why it might leak. Afterall it is presumably sealed in all the same places?
