Potential takeover of Karmann by VW!

Recommended Posts

The German press is currently buzzing with news that VW are looking at taking over the ailing coachbuilder Karmann, thanks to whom we all have our beloved Roccos.

The negotiations are going on at high speed, 11th November VW will hold a final meeting to decide. The 3 Karmann owner families may still pose a bit of a barrier, as they would love to get at least 100M Euros for the bankrupt Karmann, whereas VW have offered a 2-digit million Euro amount.

The Porsche Boxster may then very well be built by Karmann, now that Porsche belongs to VW, and the current manufacturer, Magna, has become too risky for VW, since Magna are involved in taking over Opel, a giant competitor of VW, and trade secrets may become at stake.

Furthermore the minister president of the state of Lower Saxony, where both VW and Karmann are based, some analysts say, may be owed a favour by VW, since Christian Wulff has helped avoid a takeover of VW by Poprsche. Wulff represents the state of Lower Saxony as a 20% shareholder on the VW board, and has veto rights (the famous VW-law). Wulff has his domestic electorate in Osnabrück, the city where Karmann is based, so that may play a role, too..

Analysts say that VW actually does not have a reason for taking over Karmann, given they have overcapacity in their own works, but now might bne a good tiome as any to take over a specialist manufacturer like Karmann on the cheap.

May save the future of Karmann :D

Wow - well that's just the most excellent news. I was desperately hoping VW would step in and do SOMETHING given the history of the two companies. Absolutely excellent if this all actually happens :)

lot to be said for that sentiment... is the Rado a Roccoa mk3??? Is really to be honest...

Even share a name in essence as both Scirocco and Corrado mean "storm" or wind... hence Corrado Storm version I assume... Scirocco is An Italian word for a hot southerly wind and Corrado is Spanish for a similar wind current

does that mean that the "corrado Storm" means Storm storm?

The Corrado was always meant to be a MK3 Scirocco but once development costs ballooned and they realised they'd have to price the car significantly higher than the Scirocco MK2 to make their money back, they had no choice but to rename it and market it as something more special than a Scirocco.

i thought corrado came from the spanish 'to corner'? Could be mistaken, though.

I thought it was 'Correr' which means 'To run' - hence the logo of the guy running, printed into the headrests on the Corrado Campaign....? :)

Nooo..... we don't drive 'Correrdo's do we you plumbs!

The Corrado (which was originally to be named Taifun (Typhoon) except it was already a registered trademark for a GM truck) was derived from the spanish verb Corra which means to run fast or sprint.

Just seen it on the Beeb - Great News.

Much rather they make Boxters than CLK's!

Is it just me or does anyone not think that the Karmann C Class design looks like it could very probably have been for the Mk2 Corrado? Just looks very Corrado like and the spoiler looks like it should go up and down. Just missing some slightly fatter arches.

That's putting it politely!!!!

Took an Eos order 27th July, just today it's confirmed into build week 48 which commences 23rd November. So from the date of the order to the date they start building it pretty much 4 months will have passed! And then it's got to be built and shipped over. Good thing it's a patient customer huh. And quite a few things are scheduling into build weeks next year now.
