Andy665 0 Posted November 30, 2009 Good show last night and agreed with them on the Lancia thing, the reason why Lancia were absorbed into Fiat was purely because they were bankrupt due to them not wanting to compromise on the quality of the engineering. Amazed that VW were so high up as I'm struggling to think of a single great car, Mk1 GTi excepted, they have produced some good cars and some influential ones but not great cars. As much as it pains me I don't even think that the Corrado could be considered a great car within the context of what else was available at the time - it was competitive but hardly stood head and shoulders above them or introduced a whole new take on something
swiftkid 1 Posted November 30, 2009 I sat watching the Lancia bit and thought they were going to miss out the Delta, I actually cheered out loud when it came on. I dont know why but it is without doubt my all time favourite car. Instantly went onto Pistonheads to have a look - Im in love...http://www.pistonheads.com/SALES/1276733.htm Always have a look at these every 6months or so and prices are steadily going up. Might have to sell the Raddo, get a loan and buy one before its too late. I was actually getting worried they wern't going to show the delta, but i did cheer when it came on. One of my ultimate favourite cars but i just couldn't do it justice and maintain one how it should be, no expense spared on some cars mean regular oil change and occasionally replace parts that break but i would imagine the spares for them would bankrupt me! I actually laughed when i saw ford at the top, my first thought was... "edition38 is going to have a field day about this!"
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted November 30, 2009 Yeah, TG is starting to get back to standards. Loved the Stratos, was suprised to see that Sting struggled to control it - set up maybe? Yeah it just had no grip in the wet and the front brakes were waaaaay too sharp, which unsettled the rear. The tyres were way too wide for it's weight and power, so just skimmed across the wet tarmac like a pond skater. As the lanky, frilly topped one said, at least it looked the part if nothing else  I think the Fig did a remarkable job controlling that thing and both of the recoveries were pure genius imo :D
MonkeyVR6 0 Posted November 30, 2009 Glad to see that TG is back up to its usual (good) standard. The Lancia bit was great, we've got quite a few over here, normally driven by old non-Turkish immigrant couples (the Turks tend to prefer something from the early 90's like an old Bimmer). They are funny looking supermini things. Did annoy me a bit when the interesting James May segment turned into a staged affair with Police helicopters... :camp:

vwdeviant 0 Posted November 30, 2009 But why no Y10?? Possibly the most iconic car they ever did  Must admit thought WTF when they said Lancia (was almost certain they'd say TVR) but kind of makes sense... but I'm not sure they are the "ultimate" manufacturer... Could say Caterham.. only "one" car in their line up but what a car! :norty: And Kev, I had a Notchback that Kept up with a Boxster S, there's something about driving a 40yr old car that can make a mockery of something brand new and at something like 30x the cost... Its all about overcoming the inherant engineer issues of old cars... You'd probably hate most Hot-Rods too... But then go try what else was availabe "At the time" and you'll see just how ahead of the game Air-cool'ds were... Rugged, simple, easy to fix you can get by with a basic tool kit of about 8-10 bits, (8mm/10mm/12mm/crosshead/flathead/wheelbrace/jack, would be all you need to fix 80% of issues) and the fact you can pull an engine out complete in under 5 mins... I really can't see how the hell F**D made the top slot, they only made maybe 2 "Great Cars" and both of those were actually made by Cosworth...

GT40 Ok a "Great" car (if your under 6ft) Capri... jesus death trap in the wet, unless you had a 1.6 asthma version Mustang... good to look at shite to drive, the 70-80-90's were so bad even most of the Yanks didn't like them Falcon... land barge RS200 Built by Cossie... T-Bird... :camp: Transit... beaten to "common-man load lugger" by VW 20 years before (see Splitty panal van) Then you have... Escort/Orion/Fiesta/Granada... and that's not looking at the stuff built by Ford US (remember the exploding Pinto? :epicfail: )

Capri - death trap? So was that Stratos, or any other rwd car of that era with a load of power. Mustang - i was talking the original one, not the fat older ones. There's no denying it was a great car and featured in many films. Falcon - successful car turned into a highly successful race car. T-bird - OK, its a bit gay. Enough songs written about them tho. Transit - how many bank jobs did you see done in a VW? What's the generic name for a van?
KADVR6 0 Posted November 30, 2009 best episode so far this season, the highlight for me, was it the stratos?? no. was it may going over the runway?? no. it was the stunning blonde behind Clarkson, got in trouble again with saying things out aloud. Jim 2 Posted November 30, 2009 I'd imagine most of us know that Top Gear don't exactly look after the cars they're given, or report things 'as they are' - but this still made me cringe a bit.. feel pretty sorry for the guy that loaned them the Stratos Replica! http://www.stratossupersite.com/forum/s ... eadid=7683
coolrado 0 Posted November 30, 2009 But why no Y10?? Possibly the most iconic car they ever did  a mate of mine had a tuned Y10 turbo, insane little car, great fun, electric everything including rear quarters and a completely alcantera interior designed by FILA  it was easy to get parts for as it was basically a fiat uno underneath and it never had a spot of rust on it, unfortunately it met a sticky end on a country road when he hit a landrover head on (not his fault)

Look at the way they treat EVERY test car on the track... not surprised they blew that up... I'd never loan them a car for track-testing.. unless i didn't want it back in a million pices! In the days of Tiff Noodle he broke a Marcos 5 times, and went through 8 sets of rear tyres "Testing" it!
jazzdevil 0 Posted November 30, 2009 Despite ragging the Stratos rep (and emotionally destroying it's builder), repeatedly slagging Lancia's reliability record and undoubtedly killing off yet another Monte simply by extracting it from dry store, I'd imagine the feature will kick Delta prices a little bit more northward and actually boost sales of the Stratos reps. 8)
Wompa 0 Posted December 1, 2009 I must say WOW to Top Gears Lacnia video! AWESOME! I just sat there with something in my pants every time the Lancias drove by, what a sound from those cars! Some day I must own a old classic Italian sportscar just for the sound! I will never ecodrive with that thing! VW at a second place! That was cool! I where hoping for first place but what cars are there? Golf 1 GTi, Scirocco 1 GTi, Corrado VR6, Golf 2 Rallye, Passat R36, Golf 4 R32, Golf 5 GTi, Scirocco 3 GT... What more? That is more cars than Ford had :norty:

I hear what you're saying chap, but I'd rather make a mockery of a Boxster in a VW slightly newer than an air cooled one  My mate's old flat screen cal look Beetle had a heavily modified 2.0 transporter lump in it, which used to d1ck all over RS Turbo escorts back in the day. But it handled like a sack of schitt and he had to prop the bonnet open or it would overheat, so it looked an arse. It was good fun, back in the 80s, cruising around in pastel shade pope eyed beetles, de-runner boarded, full cal look, porsche cookie cutters, splitties, etc etc, you name it.......but I developed more of an interest in the water cooled scene. Yeah I know, "water is for drinking, air is for breathing" :D
