Am I mad???

Recommended Posts

Ok, bit a whim here but after watching the topgear Lancia episode the other day Ive though about getting rid of the Corrado for a standard yet classic 80's rally car. Obvious choices are the Integrale or Ur Quattro. Lancia within my price range are the older "plain" version so Im not overly keen. There does seem to be a few Ur quattro's going around and two have come up close to me. I also think the audi 5cyl warble is the greatest noise ever to come out of a car.

Am I mad to even consider one of these? Has anyone owned one that could offer any hidden ownership woes. Ive started to prefer original yet clean versions of these kind of cars now.

It would be a second car only used about 6000miles a year.

hidden ownership woes.

Ownership woes aren't hidden! They're just expensive to run. You think running a Corrado is expensive? It's nothing!

I dont consider the Corrado that bad. Nothing majorly expensive apart from insurance and body panels. Oh and the odd engine conversion.......

I know people who've run both these cars and he's right - both are fair commitment financially but the Integrale even more so than a Quattro. From what I understand scarcity of parts is already an issue on the Lancia too.

You'll find both cars have interiors which are far inferior to what you're used to in your Corrado. Lots of wind noise, and in the case of the Lancia fairly appalling panel gaps and build quality too (the doors really do "clang" shut). Mechanically they're quite strong but they're complicated to put right and not something for home mechanics unless you really know what you're doing.

Personally I'd go for the Quattro as it's just a much nicer car in addition to the fabulous noise and easy torque led driving. The Quattro is more the daily driver material. But realistically an Impreza is a cheaper and better road car than either of them.

Roddy aka vr6storm from up Aberdeen used to have one. Loved it to bits, then the missus found out how expensive it was to run etc and it got punted IIRC. Might be worth giving him a shout.

A bloke at work had a red Delta Integrale exactly like the one Hammond drove on Top Gear and it was mega mint and mega standard. I think it was an Evo 1 or 2 or something, 16V turbo, 200+hp. He used it every day for years with no trouble.

I think people confuse the proper road spec Deltas with the manic Evo 4 (S/C & Turbo) when it comes to reliability.

UR Quattros are nice until you open the door and the 80s ghastliness hits you like a brick (same with the delta), but many proper enthusiasts can see past that though.

Of the 2 I'd take the Quattro as it's drivetrain is massively strong, highly tunable and it has fantastic kerb and noise appeal. Just make sure you get the later 20V engine as the earlier 10V is getting hard to source parts for, as Will Holman discovered in PPC with his!

I find a car's common issues are more often talked about than actually seen, so don't worry about it, be brave, get your cheque book out.....

Yeah I know he used to have one. The Lancia's not in question as I wouldnt get one unless it was a mint Evo, then your looking at 15K +. Only considering the Audi.

Could never own a Subaru. I dont dispute their ability but I simply hate them. Ive got a confortable daily car so Im not worred about that. Its just one of these cars Ive always said I would own. Good thing is if you get one and maintain it well I cant see them loosing money now.

Just another option there, a similar car which in my opinion is very nice is the S2.

Similar 5 cyl turbo quattro arrangement in a newer car, worth a few bob now too.

Looked at them before and that is an option but theres no real history behind the S2. The Ur is more iconic.

I assume you've seen the one on Scottishvag Greame, very nice, but as Kev said, the interiors take a bit of getting used to :gag:

Edit: just had a look again and its a WR 10v, looks good though apart from the interior

personally i would love a lancia delta Integrale, and as kev has mentioned i have a friend who has had one for nearly 5 years as a daily and its been virtualy faultless.

as a 2nd car theres not many other cars i would consider, and i'm sure theres some nice alloys you can buy for it mate.

Mmmm http://www.autotrader.co.uk/featuredlis ... ogcode=flp but then theres always a golf rallye to consider 8) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1990-VOLKSWAGEN-G ... 2a0307c7d7

Oh my god thats a bad interior, always look longingly at Quattros when they drive by but never realised the inside looked like a retirement home, all the more reason for buckets and a cage :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozntieZs ... _embedded# Liston the anti lag on the Audi as 56sec in, its evil.

Awesome link, I watched all 11 minutes with a smile on my face. Big fan of the little Renault 5 Turbo 2 churping away at around 2 mins 52

Every single human that drove a Group B at full pace deserve a medal, so do half the spectators too!

I love watching old clips like that......dead right about some of the spectators they were even more crazy than the drivers in those days

oh and intergrale wins everyday over UR for me mate.......although I would never own one unless I had considerably more mechanical knowledge than me :)

......guy owns one up my road - EVO 2 in very dark green with biege alcantara interior :luvlove: - it only comes out when its dry, in the summer and the ambient temp is 15 degrees though :norty:

Tell you what Graeme, let me know what you put BPN up for, I miss that old girl

Have thought about it and TBH I dont think now is the right time to be buying one of these. When I give up the bike racing and have a bit more cash together then I will look for one. Wouldnt want to scrimp on one of these machines.

As for the Group B I love how every factory had a different machine all with there own little quirks, noises etc. Its all too plain and boring now, bring back homol specials!!!!!

Fuel economy on the Audi UR Quattro is supposed to be absolutely appalling! Can totally understand why you'd want either the Lancia or the Audi though - both beautiful cars!
