Whats the best part of having a v6 rado

Recommended Posts

yes i agree with you i think the VR is a better lookin car than the R32, but there something i really like about them, i think it might be that the r32 looks good straight out the box, the sound etc but they seem to be holding there value to well!!!, what colour was your mate???

Definitely - hold their value very well indeed and the sound/torque is just amazing. Just a shame they run out of grunt a bit too early.

I had a silver one, which although I know everyone always wants blue, is actually really nice as it's such a deep silver that you don't get on other VW's except I think the Anniversary Golf. I probably wouldn't have gone for silver by choice but p/ex'd with someone who wanted my Evo 8.

oooooo niceeee yes i like silver, and blue, my mate let me drive his dark blue one, to be honest i loved it, seemed like it has a more response throttle??? the sound is awesome the bucket seats really hold you in!!

i wouldnt call it soft in turns of ride quality seem planted in fact more a firm ride, VW driver mag described it as a street racer and that alot of people brought them cos of the media press and the limited edition (3500 cars)is that right??? to then own one to find they werent that refined, me personally love all that, they also said it was a bit of a rushed job for VW cos VW were gettin hammered about not having a good drivers car so they out sourced alot ie body kit, seat etc, were the mk5 r32 is a much more refined product and design more in house. all good stuff tho lol

Now I've got my Bora R32 I have to remind myself to stay awake compared to when I drive my VR

Loads more refinement but vague and boring, torque is pretty immense though, not sure why nothing exciting happens after about 5k though

Im not the biggest fan of R32's tbh, big soft things imo.

Buy a 4motion, with the change buy a rado vr6 = Perfect!

Exactly what I am doing. Had a low mileage 4mo for years and rather than change it, am getting a weekend VR too.

Whilst more modern cars like the R32 are probably quicker they dont have any soul. I've had loads of cars some new some very fast and some complete heaps. The Corrado is the best i have found. Its got the practicality of a hatchback and makes me smile everytime i push the load pedal into the carpet. With sorted suspension and a brake upgrade it drives like a proper sports car and aside for a lotus elise i had its the most involved drive i have had. Plus i think it has more cred as loads of people have an r32 but how many of them even know what a VR Corrado is? Whilst many people consider mk1 golfs a classic (which they are) i think the Corrado is even more so a classic. Every Golf owner i meet has admired the Rado and you dont see the local hoodies hanging in tescos car park in a VR cus they cant afford the insurance. With all the folks breaking them up for spares they must be getting fairly rare. I hardly ever see any my way, does anyone even have a clue how many are left???

Knowing that your car hasn't had a dime spent on it since last MOT, it's not had a drop of fresh oil in many months, nor a wash. There's rust, scratches, scuffs, blisters, two candles up front, a loud droning sound like you wouldn't believe from inside the car, having to throw the doors to close them, rattling windows, buzzes, sunroof long gone, dents, cream leather that's way past it's best, and much much more that I could mention besides but still it runs daily, unquestioningly.

Best part of having a VR6 for me is how well it responds to mods :D

I was less than enthralled by the VR6's performance when I got it and even less taken by it's soggy handling.

After sorting out the bits I didn't like, it's now the car I always wanted it to be, and imagined what a VR6 was like when I couldn't afford one :D

Yeah I agree. There was a time when I thought the MK5 R32 was the perfect VW in every way, but the more I drive them, the more I realise just how much more of an organic and granular drive the Corrado gives.

Don't get me wrong, I do like R32s and the MK5 version is the more accomplished of the two, imo, but journeys in them just aren't memorable. Driving them fast just isn't challenging, or that rewarding if I'm honest. Once the DSG and exhaust barking novelty has worn off, there isn't much left to keep my interest as it's certainly not what i would call fast :D

I'm not saying the Rado is the most perfect car ever, it's far from it, but R32s are just too easy to drive fast. The steering and braking feedback is non existent and you get out of it at the end of a journey not feeling especially enriched or satisfied by the experience. A bit like a shop bought sponge cake not really measuring up to a hefty slice of Granny's sponge cake :D

At the end of the day, irrespective of make and model, if you're addicted to driving it, that's what matters. Soul, character, call it what you like but if it's begging you to drive it, I call that driver appeal! You can't really put a price on that. The car either has it, or it doesn't :D

Soft? Have you driven one? They are such a superb drive, as Chris says, straight out of the box.

Yup, had a mk5 r32 for a day recently and drive my mates one pretty often and they're big lardy things imo but then id say that, look at how my rados set up, its stiff as feck tbh.

Ive never driven a stock rado so cant comment on that but i dont rate r32's that highly (never driven a modded one)...

Out of the box they're good yes but give me a civic type r anyday to thrash around. I am 21 u know lol.

FLIP ME i just read Kev's post, sums it up tbh. Once u get over the noise its nothin special imo. Mk5 edition30 for me with moneys for suspension upgrades. I will admit, R32's with DSG are fast though, like properly imo.

I have moved from a Corrado VR6 to a MK4 golf R32 and I have to say that I enjoy every moment of driving it, more than I did my VR6.

I will never forget the sound of my VR but I think that my R32 is just much more exciting for me. The torque is fantastic. Although I do respect Kevs view above I do think that his Corrado is far superior to most corrados around. So I think he would absolutely love an R32 if he had it to the great standard his Corrado currently is (Bi turbo etc)

I have just recently taken the R32 to the Nurburgring and I absolutely loved its response on the track. I felt great with no under steer and loads of power when coming out of corners (this is with a remap). Also the stopping I found was great.

My last thing about the MK4 is its rareity (2200 made approx) the MK5 is a great car but is a mainline item from VW. The MK4 was final fairwell you could say, like the Corrado Storm. I have a Grey one which is 1 in 31 made in UK.

Seeing the look on pedestrians faces when you nail it and the induction roars!

...through a tunnel!

Tunnels are the best thing about owning a vr!

Thanks! :D

That's a good point, I do sometimes take the level mine is at for granted when comparing to other cars! It's not perfect though, believe me! It's six of one, half a dozen of the other with me though and I'm never fully happy!. There are elements of the R32 I like and wish my Rado had, but there are sides to R32s I wish were more like the Corrado! :D

You're absolutely right, I would love an R32 biturbo and I'm sure there are things that can be done to address my complaints about steering feedback, but it's like tuning the 12V all over again. Compared to tuning the 16V or G60, the VR6 always had a massive tax attached and looking at R32 tuning prices, I'm finding the same situation again!

I have a Grey one which is 1 in 31 made in UK.

I saw a Tornado red MK4 in PPC a few months back when they did a buying guide, which had a sunroof (I like my sunroofs!) and leather Recaros etc etc. I was quite taken by that, and Red is rare too apparently?

I defo prefer the R32 to an S3 though, by miles. I think both the MK4 and MK5 are way better looking cars that Audi's equivalents, and more sporty.

Agreed :D Hard to not drop it a gear or 2 and plant the right foot when coming to a tunnel :D

The way I see it is we're breeding a generation of pampered drivers who take electronic aids for granted.

I've sat in newer cars before with people gunning it and on more then one occassion thought to myself...you have no real idea what you or the car is doing, and the second you reach the limit of either of your capabilities then it's game over.

I feel myself nearly brush apex curbs on roundabouts in the C, In the R I'm more likely to drive over the middle of it then clip anything of any significance :)

Yeah the Red MK4 they only made 44 of ( I read the same article ) I think your right in saying that the price of modding the R is still very high. All you need to do is look at FI prices on the JBS website.

Yeah true I take that one back, soft porn and quick driving are not a great combination

Took the C out for a drive tonight and approached a junction which I just had to slow for. I was in second gear and the car was almost pinking. I planted my right foot to the floor and held it there until the red line. That's the first time I've done this in the VR since I've had it. OMG... what a sound :luvlove: It was the first time had heard the engine really working. The power, induction and the surge all together was something else.

when I drove the car fast I've always kept the revs up around 4.5k to get the best performance. But the sound when its pulling low down in the revs is amazing...

To think, if I hadn't of read this thread... I'd of never known :D
