Maybe I'm getting old (39 :( ) but this recent Autocar article sums things up nicely.

This is why a Corrado is a great car for UK roads. It's not just point and go like modern turbodiesel rep mobiles. Instead you need to use a bit of roadcraft to get the best out of one. Does anyone agree?

Absolutely Bullfinch. Great find. The most fun I've had is in my old Civic Type-R (EP3). The modest torque output meant you had to work the nuts off it to get the most out of the car, was great fun and I still miss it now!!

Completely agree with this. Look at the original mk1 GTI which had about 112bhp(?) How much fun was that car! Look at todays modern heavyweight cars. Yes they are unbelievably powerful in comparison but all you do is point them in a direction and lean on the loud pedal. The car works out the best way to get around the corner.

my first car was a 45bhp 1.1 Renault 5. Driven at 100% 100% of the time and a lot more fun in slow corners than any performance car because you literally threw it in and waited for the endemic understeer (or absurdly induced oversteer) and body roll to test your skills on the way out.

this is why i love my runabout subaru justy 1.3 awd 8) so much fun it the wet and all i do is boot it everywhere! boot it up a roundabout, brake, drop down a cog and turn flat out. if it runs wide just put foot down and it grips back again what a laugh!

agreed. recently put the C into a roundabout in the wet a bit toooo fast, mind you the road was totally clear. Anyway back end swung out and i ended up facing the other way. Disoriented? Yep i was. Fun? Absolutely.

I don't think cars are too fast to be fun at all. Find me a lottery winner who was happier when he was poor.

 

When stuck behind a row of pensioners doing 25mph on a B road, I'd rather be in the GT3 than the Clio or Scirocco.

 

I'd also take the GT3 over those 2 on track days any day of the week.

 

There are plenty of drivers out there who would derive a lot of 'fun' out of wringing a GT3's neck, which is the point really. The GT3 and cars like it exist purely because their makers have responded to demand. So for Goodwin to say cars like that are too fast to be fun is total cobblers. The sales figures of these cars suggests otherwise.

 

Besides which, the main problem is we are driving 21st century cars on 20th century roads. It's a bit like trying to run the 21st century Eurostar train on 18th century rails, it ain't gonna happen.

I understand where he is coming from, its what I did on my road bike i.e. going from a full on sports bike to a naked bike that kept the speed down. What I found though is that I rode more aggressively to get a thrill. I prefer to have a fast car and have a choice to go slow or fast. Driving a slow car fast is fine if your in the mood but soon gets taxing.

Overtaking is far less stressful and safer with an abundance of grunt. And dare I say 'fun' despatching a number of caravans in one fell swoop :D

 

Having to plan ahead and row the gearbox to find some torque to overtake a Rover 25 is not my idea of 'fun' at all.

Hell do i agree with this, of course i do. Driving is boring and mundane when you dont have to think about your actions. Too much throttle and you'll spin up, not enough and you look a muppet when your stuck on green lights restarting your engine. Thats what driving all about. Automatic self drive bollocks, what?
