Recommended Posts

hi , im new to the forum and corrados, i currentley own a escort rs turbo but have always fancied a vr6 and have a couple of queries.

what quater mile times do these cars do standard?

what ins group are they?

0-60?

how much do they weigh?

i would be looking for a car around 3k but would need to be clean with leather. is this a bit optimistic?

i have wanted one of theses for a few years now but have been aprehensive and worry there not that tuneable without spending thousends?

thanks in advance Rob

welcome to forum

quarter of a mile .... no idea but quick enough!

ins group 17 ? i may be wrong , someone will correct me .

weight ? not sure .... but they weigh some

0. 60 varies in different books n mags i like the quickest one 6.4 secs , but there are plenty of options to bring on more horses

they are a great car to drive , if n when you buy one , put down the window at about 3n a half rpm in second floor it and listen to that roar of the vr :D

i will only do circa 3k a year in the car and will be a gareged pampered toy etc

Hi,

- Low to mid 15s unmodified

- Gp19 or Gp20 depending on which company you go to. I think the ABI recommended is Gp19 (for VR6)

- Low to mid 6's unmodified and depending on how aggressive you are.

- Quoted at 1,235kg dry (VR6)

- You can probably find one with leather for the budget you're after but you will need to look around

- [added] No the chassis don't rot unless the car has been damaged and badly repaired. That's a good point (they weren't built in Daganham!)

Seriously if you are wanting a drag racer or street racer a VR6 isn't really the best choice. They're not that quick off the line, not cheap to run, drink petrol, and are expensive when they go wrong. Check my blog link below if you want to see how much a hard used (in this case track day'd) car can cost you.

HTH

John

The 1.8 16v is the cheapest to insure- typically group 15. The 2.0 8v, 16v & G60 are typically group 17, the VR6 group 18. VR6 Storm is usually 19. However, a lot of insurance companies seem to use the new system (up to 50)- can't seem to find where the Corrado fits into this, but would think it would be mid-thirties (same as R32 etc).

Based on the questions asked, I think you could be looking at the wrong car! Don't take that the wrong way.

maybe.

the questions ive asked are just to gather an idea on performance.

as for group20 for a car with the performance quoted seems abit high.

thanks for the replys

The insurance group isn't necessarily relative just to performance. It's about cost of parts and the repair/replacement cost as well.

If you want a Corrado, you pretty much know it and buy one. Ok everyone wants to know that extra performance can be obtained as well but if you're talking normally aspirated that usually means performance gains can be expensive.

£3k is a good budget depending on what you're after.

Actually I've only ever seen insurance group 19 quoted for VR6 Storm, and then only by a subset of insurers. The standard VR6 is generally quoted at group 18, which is just at the top of the range the normal insurers will touch (FWIW the G60 is grp 17). You shouldn't have difficulty getting a quote on a fairly unmodified car from even the big names who advertise on TV.

It's still a high grouping, considering the performance, but you have to remember it's got very little to do with performance and a whole lot more to do with "likeliness of being nicked", and back in the day the Corrado VR6 was the Imprezza Turbo of cars for being stolen. Except its built in security systems were rubbish (until the CP immobilised engines, at least).

It would spin its front wheels for about thirty seconds before going off like a scalded rabbit.

0-60 time: 36 secs. ;)

To be fair, it's a FWD car, you don't make much headway on 0-60 times by increasing engine output because there's barely enough grip to put the standard car's 180 lbft down in first and second gears as it is.

But maybe someone will come along and randomly wander into a thread about insurance groups who happens to have a 300 bhp rotrex charged VR6 that's otherwise standard and have timed it so he can answer your question.. :)

There is no such thing as an insurance group for a supercharged VR6. They take the basic premium group rate and then decide a premium loading to apply to that based on thier view of how significant the modifications are. So they could add 25%, 50%, 100% - whatever. It's a subjective matter. One of my early jobs as a youngling was at an Motor Insurance Broker. The process hasn't changed, trust me.

I don't think that's what the Doc was driving at John .... the conversation somehow moved to the 0-60 time for a charged VR. 36 seconds apparently  Will have to add that to the Wiki.

Nope.

Depends. Recaros are worth more ... as are interiors from later cars i.e. VR's. Very roughly - standard £550. Recaro - £750. But it totally depends.

Considering you've owned an older ford, you'd be surprised how resilliant these cars are to rust. I've owned a couple of Ford's and quite considered a Capri (albeit not a lovely mint 2.8i), the only real rusty let down is around the petrol filler cap, and even this seems to be bad luck if you end up with it.

My new local garage had an S2 RST in, that was having a lot of welding. My '90 G Reg Valver, hasn't had any.

Have a poke round the members galleries for some ideas for what you can do with the VR6.

yeah i no what you mean about rot. ive been lucky to be fair, mine has been in my family since 1991 and ive owned it since 2004 as 3rd owner so not the usual shite examples that float about.

just feel a bit old for it now (30 this year)and the only car i can have/want as a toy is a vr6 corrado and will only be doing 3k a year so being 2.9 will probably be on par with my RS on fuel etc.

some lovely cars on pistonheads anyone bought from TCS?

THANKS
